Awesome bug, I'm about to drop an sti motor and subaru 5sp trans in my bug. Don't let the power go to your head, be gentle on 1st gear, no hard launches. The gears are strong, but you'll split the case like an egg, I've seen it a few times.
Honestly it all depends on how much you want to spend. If you stick with the stock turbo, injectors computer....probably looking at around $2000. BUT if you want to go big, it will cost you! For example, my injectors cost $600 for the set. The sky is the limit!! As far as being reliable....if you stick with stock components, you should never have an issue! Mine is a little tempermental when it gets hot outside.
wow! that's massive HP! All the wrx conversions in Australia, mine included are getting no where near 300hp! I only have 204hp@ the wheels on 8psi boost, my friend just had his suby bug dynoed with an STI engine & it made 230hp @ the wheels on 16psi boost. I can't even imagine how fast yours must be!
I am running a 20G turbo, which is a little bigger. 750cc top feed injectors, and a stand alone computer. That might be the difference in breaking the 300 mark. To be honest with you.....when it hits boost, the front end gets light and squirrly! FUCK'n love it!
So far I am happy how the whole cooling system is working together. Different people have different schools of thought. The way I see it is....each to there own! lol As for the sleeper look....I want to modify the exhaust to incorporate dual pee shooters out the back with full over rider bumpers to give it that "stock" look
it would be a good idea to have an air scoop built on the left back side directed to the air filter,a little fresh air is always welcome, especially with a hot turbo around......
I have the TD05 18g turbo, Microtech Computer as well. Don't know if top feed injectors are worth 100hp. My car weighs 2244Lb (1020kg) quarter mile is 13.0@ 103mph taking it easy off the line. As much as I don't like drag racing, they say the 1/4 mile is a true indication of HP. U should be in the 10's easy!
Me likey likey,What a beast I would love to do the same thing to my Beetle but I want to try to put the radiator in the back near the engine where the vents are under the rear window and channel the hot air out he bottom. So I want to redisgn the whole back vent under the window so I can fit the radiator and fans so the fresh air gets sucked in through the back window vent then the hot air would be expeled down the bottom of the car. I also want to try and make it look like a sleeper and stock.
Its running 17 psi on 94 octane pump gas. No water meth...YET! lol The rad is located up front. I am using a bone stock 1975 vw beetle single side plate IRS tranny for now, till I save up the cash to put in a subaru transmission.
Stock 75 beetle, single side plate transmission. When i say STOCK i mean STOCK!!! I have had the car for 18 years and never pulled the transsmission out! When I get the cash I will upgrade it to an STI one.
This brings up a few questions. First, how do you get enough air across the radiator to keep the motor cool in the summer? I live in AZ and this would be my biggest concern. Second, how do you keep the tires cool with a red hot collector right next to them? This would be a concern if you're drag racing and trying to keep slicks at the right temp, and may impact the wear of your tires under street driving circumstances. I would like to see more detail as I've though of doing this swap myself. Great job!
There is a small scoop under the front apron aswell as behind the horn grills to channel air in. Behind the rad the body has been cut out to allow the air to escape. as well as two fans to cool it down. As for the collecter warming up. The only time it will do that is under full throttle and at thatbpoint there is a lot of air movement under there to keep the tires safe.
TurboABA1955Bug I want to run my radiator over the trans also in order to keep clean lines under the car. How does yours cool and do you need air ducts directed air towards the radiator?
To be honest, I'm scared to take it to the track and blow the tranny. I will maybe at the end of the season and if it blows, I have all winter to fix it. I think most of my hp is the 17psi i'm ramming down it's throat!
youngrecklessboy171 yes will bolt up to vw trans with a converter plate...you can run a Subaru trans but it can be additional expenses such as replacing shifter axles control arms and exct..because its larger than the vw....but reinforcing the vw trans to withstand the extra power is the way I would go....
+utopiabugs,, if you still have this machine I am interested to know how those 2.5 na heads are holding up on the 2.2t block , and what head gasket did you use, also did the coolant passages on the 2.5 heads match the ones on the block? , thanks bad@$$ bug bty cheers
I got this thing when I was 15 years old. That was 22 years ago. No chance of it going any time soon! lol The heads are holding up great. I used Cometic head gaskets for a 2.5. the water jacket holes lined up great. I was concerned about that at first too. But to my surprise it lined right up.
I cut a small notch for the turbo to clear the firewall. Not sure how many miles I put on it. But going for a 6 hour drive tommorrow. Not bad for a scrap car motor.
My suggestion is take the time to do it properly the first time. Very frustrating having to do things twice because you cut corners or buy cheap parts. I learned the hardway. OEM seals are the best! Last thing you want is it finally starts and pisses oil everywhere!
