Jay, I just bought the M77 Hawkeye African in 416 Ruger. I had some minor fitting issues with the magazine plate that took a few minutes to fix. The instructions stated that sights are regulated to be 1" high at 50 yards with Hornady dangerous game ammo. which was relatively true. I have a Leupold MK3 1.5x5 scope on order so I'll let you know how the accuracy plays out. It's not really a rifle where I'm going to shoot a couple of boxes of ammo on a range day. I'm going to leave the muzzle break on and just take your word on the thread protector.
You should never have to wait that long between shots. Shoot a 5 shot group, then allow the barrel to cool for a few minutes. This is dependent on ambient temps as well. Rugers are very easy to diagnose. For one thing, they all NEED to be glass bedded properly. The next check is the mag box tension. It should never be too tight. You should be able to drop the floor plate, and wiggle the mag box, ever so slightly. If it is too tight, it adds an uneven stress to the action. This will degrade accuracy/precision. Furthermore, if you glass bed your action properly, you don't have to worry as much about exact action screw torque. That becomes a thing of the past. Those that don't understand that, have not been around the platform for very long. A rifle relying on exact torque specs, is a sick rifle. Something that you guys need to understand. Quit making excuses for that. Moving on to the scope rings and torque specs: If you don't know how to properly tighten a fastener, use a torque wrench. The more important aspect to rifle accuracy, is using a "proven" rifle scope in rings that are in perfect alignment. Lap or shim those rings, if they are not.

Well, I have the same gun in the same caliber and like you, I had issues but I’ve overcome them. First the express sight was off. I contacted Ruger and they wanted me to send the rifle to them. I called bs and told them to send me a different rear blade which they did. That fixed that. Second it would shoot fine and then bullets would wander. That was the stock bolts would shoot loose. I’d retorque them and it would shoot fine and then the same thing. The wood compresses. I ordered a Bell and Carlson stock with a bedding block and that ended that. I wipe my guns with Ballistol but I haven’t noticed any rust. I bought the gun chambered in 30.06 because I live in SE U S and that covers anything around here. I shoot Remington 180 grain core lokts and it groups well and kills deer effectively. I hope this helps. Note: I didn’t use the Ruger rings either. I use Warne qd rings which I have used with great success.
The Ruger’s I bought in synthetic stocks shot great. The Ruger’s in wood furniture needed bedding and floating. I have Ruger’s from pencil barrels to heavy. They all shoot great. The ones in wood stocks needs floating and bedding. Just simple bedding in the front of the action.
Just glass bed it. Quit waisting your time and ammo. Ruger wood stocks will shoot great when bedded. Float the barrel then a simple 1” of bedding at the barrel lug forward.

I've done that before and it works well. That is actually what I've had to do to my "stainless" Ruger Hawkeye Guide Gun to control rust. That said I'm a huge fan of these new coatings available. I've got guns that were Duracoated 10+ years ago that are still great. Thanks for sharing 👍

Yep, that's the one. One suggestion. Check the bolt lugs for full and even contact (the sharpie trick). Quick and easy. I suspect it is just fine. Placing the barrelled action in a chassis solved for free floating the barrel and bedding the action in short order. Pretty smart actually. No getting around a bad barrel. Great work, enjoying your content.
I like how you do not recommend to Not remove the safety as you did. There's a different situation for every person, as I prefer the safety myself because of my holster every person and every scenario is different. F.Y.I. I also modified my firing pin cups to work like "marine cups" for Glocks so that they will cycle " hopefully to the same effect". As a personal carry I would hope that if I dropped it in a puddle or it was pouring rain my firearm would cycle regardless.( I see a missed market here.)
I have not read every single comment, but that said people are not understanding the video that you have out you’re not referring to the older M 77 this rifle here is newer than the 20-year-old or even 30-year-old rifles. I will agree with you on the video that you’re referring to. I had the exact same rifle it doneThe same thing was very disappointed for that kind of price don’t get me wrong. I am a Ruger fan, but that specific rifle is a failure. In my opinion. I’m sure everyone does not have the same opinion. Thanks for the video.
Man. I would be happy with 2 or 3 moa. From a (guide) rifle. It’s not remotely engineered as a target rifle. Sorry just my nickel s worth. 🎉. But kudos to you for trying.
🎯 spot on! It’s meant for taking care of business at a closer range. A charging hyena/lion/ hippo up to 50 yards if you’re out in the African bush. Same goes with the M77 African.
I have had a lot of mark 2 rugers ,make sure the barrel is free not touching make sure it is floating barrel ,I have had to fix a few if it isn't touching it will shoot with accuracy
Interesting video to see. I have a Hawkeye African that I've been using but only with iron sights so far. I am glad to hear Ruger at least reached out to ya. I am curious how well the barrel is floated on your rifle too. Have you tried passing a dollar bill around the barrel as far back as you can go?
1st was the sig p250, i got it for a steal and also is still a good gun but in hindsight i would've just ponied up the extra cash and got a different model. You live you learn haha
