“short circulting” and examples straw pin hole are both unproper words. Mix ridge and box vent might cause back set or vortex, but not always. they are not short circuiting, and if you suck both end of the straw and pin hole, you are likely to have more output. Anyway, none of roof mfg are mathmatically or physically good, so, only practical test can say yes or no which I have not seen. I have no ridge vent but box vent, attic is very hot, yet when I touch the vent from inside, the hot air are not goes out but cold air is goes in.
Does it matter which way the soffit intake fins face? Aesthetically they look better facing the house but as far as getting maximum air from soffit intake - which way should they face?
Ridge vents work well in cooler climates or small homes gable roofs. On my house, the ridge is 30ft long. Thats about 540-570 sqin outflow. My soffit intakes are 36sqin. Obviously my intakes are suffocating the attic. However the ridge vent only supplies half the exhaust needed for my house to fall into code. The attic is 1050sqft. This means that a large home will need box vents supporting the ridge.
When I say box vent, I mean low profile vents near the ridge. Not something that catches wind intake. Also, putting these on ONE side of the attic to prevent cross sectional windflow in the attic.
If it were me, I would not be pushing ridge vents on customers in the southern USA. Aesthetically I think they are nice, but they are not performance products without some good planning.
I’m about to have insulation blown into my 2 attics…one small attic about 250 square feet has 2 static vents down low and a gable vent up high…insulation guy said I don’t need baffles cuz there’s no soffits …will this work? Also on my larger attic only one side has soffits across front of house …gable vent on each side and an exhaust fan in center of roof. Do I need to baffle the front soffits or will the fan and 2 gable vents be enough..he again didn’t mention anything about baffles in the front
This dude is offering zero numbers! The difference between gable venting and ridge venting is 10 degrees F at best. This guy is trying to sell ridge vent but he doesnt tell you that they leak and thenines with filters have crapy airflow. Eventhough net free area is 18 sq inches the filter reduces the effective area. Go with soffit vents all around and gable vents and let it go. Ridge vent is easy and very lucrative for contractors to scare you with so they can make 1000 extra bucks per 2000 sq ft house.
Do you point out in any product material that you cannot run a ridge vent over a smoke barrier or fire wall? On a survey 9 out of 10 times I find this issue.
Excellent presentation. I agree that intake ventilation is not given the coverage it deserves. Can you combine roof intake vents with existing bird vents? Can you use intake vents with an overhang (roof)?
Hello dear friend, I saw your RU-vid channel, you upload very nice videos on your channel. I have watched and audited the videos and noticed that all the videos are beautiful. But there is a problem with your channel! Your main problems are video views not coming in and your videos not reaching your target audience! Because, your channel does not have SEO! Chances are that you DO have some problems that you just aren't aware of yet, such as higher-than-necessary heating and cooling bills, reduced shingle life, sub-optimal home comfort caused by drafts and cold spots, etc. (Unless you have a modern, properly-CONDITIONED attic/insulation/roof system such as Matt Risinger employed in his own house.) But those employ relatively new technology and are very rare at the present time.
The more things heat up, the more any convective current for cooling should not be limited. Much like a carburetor, the limiting factor of performance is the air intake. I'll allow you to use that. :)
Great information! I wished I knew before my roof installation. I have winter condensation issues in attic. I changed roof. I am not sure my roofer made sure for balanced ventilation. We have drip edge ventilation. Insulation guy added insulation and sealed openings. But, problem is still there and I believe it's ventilation issue. But, I am not sure how to balance. Whom should I contact? TIA
I don’t see the problem with having intake > as long as you meet minimum ridge exhaust arae; indeed, the more soffit beyond that the more pressure imbalance and hence air. Movement you are creating
Posting this before watching. If my soffit vents net free air calculates to 13 sq in / lin ft, and I put a 20 net free air ridge vent on, does that really matter? I know the ridge is supposed to equal 50% or less than the sum, so one would think that I should be looking for a ridge vent with a Nfa of 13 or less. But...., the actual ridge Nfa was determined by my builder when he cut the gap at the ridge, right? So if that gap square inches works out to less than 50 percent of the total sum, then the size of the hood doesn't matter right? I like the rigid vent better than the rolled, but I'm concerned that I might over size it and reverse the air flow. But I think the gap is the regulator and not the cap. Like the size of the carburator is what dictated cfm, not the size of the breather. Right?
This is the video that made me investigate what was really underneath the PVC vinyl soffit whoever installed it put it up over what was existing without removing the old clogged up vents. once I remove the old vinyl and replace the vents things started to get a lot better. I added small fans underneath The Whirlybirds on the roof and put them on a my attic currently doesn't get above 20 degrees of the ambient it was 109 the other day and the attic never got above 121. I am currently renovating it's not over yet but this advice was priceless thank you very much
this is why when the mexicans come over I will forever hire them over anyone else, gc's are rip off's, only use them for major work that require permits
intake was the problem for me....almost every rafter was plugged up with insulation...plus the soffit vents had 3 coats of paint...i opened every rafter for air, added new vents.... the attic temp went down about 20 degrees
Paul is a great "Ask the Expert" presenter ✊🏾 I need all of the products after watching him! Inquiry: I bought a house that was built in 1979. The roof is in great condition but it does not have any attic vents but does have what seems to be siding soffits. I will be installing your ridge vents. However, should I still install your Edge Vents?
Calling to task the contractor out there to problem spot within his direct specialty and outside his specialty, communicate with homeowner, and then offer a solution or say find a solution bc I dont do X, but you need to find a fix for this. This guy's message is important.
