This movie definitely isn't for everyone and it isn't perfect... but I'm gonna rewatch it asap. Visually it was beautiful and Justice Smith's performance was heartbreaking. Really dug it. 90s af, Lynchian, twisted. Reminded me of Videodrome a bit?
Are u kidding, this film was really good. AI turning on humans as a trope is actually what makes it scary, the way that's portrayed is what makes it interesting or not. There are some movies on AI that are incredibly boring, this was not!
Bro, I completely agree about victor. And TBH I honestly kind of felt bad for him. He seemed like the only one focused on the plot and who had the most bullshit happen to him. It could have been so good and meaningful when he went after Ben, maybe they could have done something to parallel how Victor and Ben felt disconnected from the other umbrellas, but.... Fuck character growth and empathy, amirite?
Great first episode, I love how grounded this series seems to be. No Batman, but the street hand to hand dealers and mob boss moves. I’m hoping for a great season, off to a great start!
I reckon a loose adaptation of Arkham Knight (loose, considering how devisive video game adaptations are) would be really cool as a last movie, I'm talking about the core ideas of AK with Batman being over a decade into crime fighting, Scarecrow as the main villian, and Batman being outed as Bruce Wayne, that's it, I think a lot could be done with Scarecrow, even without the arkham knight and his militia being there
Vic: I have to see what his home life is about. His street crew doesn't seem to be about much and he's got better oportunities to earn with Oz. I think the more Oz trusts him, the less he'll worry about a death threat hanging over him. Oz should worry whether Sophia can get any info out of Vic.
Would be interesting to check out your review of the show From, if you like it. I told you about it 3 years ago, but you were too preoccupied with other shows. Season 3 just started. It's kind of a mystery horror.
I hope batman 2 will be a movie that shows Gotham becoming Batman city so I think the villain will be the court of owls a. Fr the green lantern show I pick Trevante Rhoads for John Stewart and Joshua Jackson for Hal Jordan. This should be a true detective meets leath weapon. Two cops who really dont like each other but coming to terms with they can only trust each other. Cause lets face it the big reveal will either be there is no Guardian just Sineastro pulling the string or the Guardian really are the corruption they tried to prevent
This episode was so amazing. I was immersed in it from the jump. This show started off so good and I hope it continues all the way through. DC has something very good here.
The movie was mostly powerfully horrifying, but the ending, despite being spectacularly gory, did drag. I figured this would be 1hr 50 min movie, but it's 2 hr 20 min or so.
The background of Demi moores character is irrelevant. She is the stand in for any and every woman who feels this way. I think looking for more realism from this movie is a mistake.
I don’t want the court of owls, the first movie was about exposing the secrets and corruption in Gotham, are we just gonna do that again but with even more secretive organizations
I went in expecting this movie to be amazing from the reviews I read, a lot of people fell in love with it. Personally I enjoyed it up until the 3rd act, but because of all the closeups on a big screen, i felt unwell, the gore was so over the top it and zoomed in, it made me dizzy and nauseous, had to hold the wall and breathe after i left the theater hahha
I had pretty much given up on DC in general. Friends had to coax me into watching the first episode of The Penguin. Afterward, I was the one coaxing them into watching again. I loved it. No condescending dialogue for idiots. No broad characterization. No empty promises of lore connections to come. It was just fascinatingly executed, and I'm on board.
That was hard to watch because it could have been much better! It went from decent plot into a Stephen King meets Tarantino ending…. Could have been a good cautionary tale but missed the mark in the 3rd Act😢
I agree with you. I really enjoyed the movie. The thing that confused me most was why would anyone want to use this substance? It seemed like a miserable experience.
Why do people risk their lives to get plastic surgery thinking it’ll make them look younger/hotter but it makes them look disfigured? The Substance is basically that
Hey, Elliott! This was definitely a thrill ride in so many ways, especially with the performances, score, cinematography, and costumes. However, I did have some of the same issues as far as the tone, and how it went about executing the core message with some of the body horror elements, especially at the end. I also think ironically, "The Substance" was definitely lacking a good amount of substance in a lot of ways. Great commentary as always! 👌👌👌
The original was so disturbing that it didn’t seem to need to be remade. I also agree that the foreign horror movies are more intense than the American ones.
Loved the camera work, the colors, Demi and the first 2/3rds or so of the film ...then for somr reason it didn't hold me as strongly at the end. Crazy ass ride of a film, film fans should see it and talk about it with friends...but i didnt love it start to stop. Good review as always, you pointed out a few things i couldnt explain as cleanly as you did. I look forward to the talks this film will create
