I didn't mind all the other kids cuz they pretty much got dispensed with rather efficiently. Even when the supporting characters did die, Andy and Rain were intricately involved. More relevant characters would have just detracted from the Andy and Rain story development. And we certainly don't want that. Plus, I don't want to care about characters that are gonna die. That's a distraction. I'd rather invest all my emotional and intellectual effort toward the leads. Because Andy and Rain have a legit relationship. In the other Alien movies, you needed an engaging ensemble cuz Ripley was a solo act. And the key relationship was Ripley and the Alien. So now, in the sequel, we can build on Rain's and Andy's relationship. Cuz it feels like its about to cross some lines.

So no one picked this up yet, being too distracted in their annoyance, but after my second viewing and listening for connections, I believe the main reason why (besides the fan service levity/nod) Andy is weird about delivering “the line” from Ripley Queen battle in Aliens is because 1) yes he doesn’t know the word and how to use it and 2) Bjorn TWICE in the movie uses the word DIRECTLY to Andy who 3) both times the camera focuses on his face showing he doesn’t understand the word but is learning it. So this is the reason, in story, why Andy uses it, following Bjorn’s delivery - and it just happens to be a nod. But that helped make more sense of it and not feel weird about it.

Surprisingly, I picked that up the first time I watched the movie! Because when Bjorn says the word I thought he was going to be to say the call back. Obviously, instead it was Andy, so it was kind of foreshadow that way.

@@artheaux666 That's a great point. Byatch is such a strident thing to say. No way could they put that in the script by accident. It's weird that more reviewers didn't pick that up before getting their panties in such a twist.

I enjoyed the movie until the last act. It didn’t ruin the film for me, but it definitely took my enjoyment of the film down a peg. I was happy with the visuals in the movie besides the CGI as you said. I agree 100% though the cast minus Rain and Andy, were a detriment to the film. I didn’t care about anything that happened to the supporting cast. Solid video and review, thank you. Keep up the good work.

It would've been better if they explained that the crew was so young because they're all second-generation workers born on the mining planet. All their parents have died by being overworked. It would've made them more sympathetic. These kids have known nothing but this hellish planet, and their families all died because of this soulless corporation. They just want to go somewhere, anywhere else. Imagine a line like, "If we don't take this chance, they'll work us to death just like our parents!" Maybe Kay, the pregnant character, says she needs to leave because recent births on the planet have had complications and even mutations because the toxicity of the planet has risen. Would make what happens later even sader, her nightmare come true.

An interesting thing about Rook is that initially, the CGI stuck out in a bad way. However, the effects on Rook did start to look better. Not only through tv screens but when there were shots of him moving around on the desk. Some will say fan service to habe the Ian Holm imagine, but it does make sense due to the fact that "timeline wise" The WY Corporation would have those synthetic models still around.

I find it peculiar that people have a problem with the Ash model android being used, yet I didn't hear anything about the 2 David models being in the same movie. The only issue that I have is that the Ash model should be recognizable by the Nostromo crew, unless it was never released to the general public.

I really liked the second half of the trailers where the sound goes quiet and the film looked to be well shot from the previews. This movie had some things going for it, but overall it felt like the first Alien movie that was made by Weyland-Yutani Corp. The Bad: the cut and paste storytelling - 1st part remixing beats from Alien, 2nd part remixing beats from Aliens and the 3rd part remixing beats from Prometheus. Nonsensical storytelling - are these kids really the first to board the station? Nobody from the corp felt to go up and investigate? The terrible CGI of the throwback character took me out the movie. They couldn't have had Fassbender or a new Synthetic? Or another version of the Andy synth (which would've been nice as him being initially introduced as 'damaged' just rubbed me wrong as a black male seeing the first black synth in this universe. I felt we didn't spend enough time with the aliens, the facehuggers or the alien. I didn't feel the characters terror or fear of coming up against such an evolved interstellar demon. Got no sense of the Alien as an incredibly cunning and rutheless entity or of how they function together which is touched upon in Aliens with the queen and her domain. The characters being younger didn't add anything to the story. They had next to no cameraderie, charisma and were completely FORGETTABLE except from Rain and Andy. I don't remember their names and the motivations of the characters felt all over the place. Everyone had been hyping up Fede to me, and I was expecting at very least a grusome gory Alien entry with strange psycho-sexual imagery suggested in the trailers - this was a tame (disney-fied?) photocopy. The deaths were all unremarkable, the final creature was not scary at all, ugly yes, scary no - and to think that they have access to hr giger's archives and designs and this is the best you could come up with? Google his art work and see that the alien franchise has been regressing since the first 2.5 entries. The opening on the Weyland Yutani mine also never came to life, it felt slow and stilted until the Aliens section of the movie. I would've loved to have opened with the Andy that let the miners die or them just planning to go up to space station. The scene where the characters were supposed to be silent but one character had a full conversation with someone else was hilarious. The inclusion of the Ian Holm android was pretty awful. The Good - I enjoyed the cinematography (although it felt more like horrror movie aesthetics throughout and less like the stylised practical lighting we see in Alien and Aliens - which again took me out the movie into a self aware horror movie vibe) I did enjoy the low fi, derelict aethetic of the production design, the fonts and animated computer screens were dope. Fede is good at building tension and cross cutting between action in various settings. The gravity acid sequence was dope and the best thing in the picture for me (quickly ruined by a cheap call back "Get away from her you bitch" that took me straight out the movie) the score was nice but again was sampling previous Alien scores. The first opening where they find Cain's Son was dope and I was so dissapointed by the next sequence as it was ominous, the operatic staging, the costumes - it felt really sinister and unnerving. Rain and Andy actors gave dope performances, I just wish they were better written. I think a truly innovative evolution of the original Xenomorph in the third act couldve been really interesting. Overall, this felt like true AI filmmaking. Sampling the best of the first 2 films and reproducing the horrendous and pretentious black goo ideas from Prometheus. I wasn't as disappointed as i was by seeing Prometheus when it came out, but all the positive reviews for Romulous showed me again, that so many so called journalists are bought and paid for by the corporations. This was a throughly mediocre film. I'm not getting my hopes up for the TV show if Ridley 'Black Goo' Scott is involved and Im not surprised he killed the Neil Blomkamp version with Ripley, Newt and Hicks as it would deviate from the awful and pretentious ideas presented in Prometheus and Convenant - the only thing of value from these films is the Fassbender synth. I would love a clean continuation of the story without all the fan service, goo lore and remixing of previous films. I mean no disrespect but please keep Fede away from Alien - which obviusly won't happen when this film makes bank. Damn shame really...I agree with Elliot, would've loved to see the original alien wreck havoc on the space station, it would've been a stronger opening...

@seangill2522 Ridley had stated before the film was completed that the Prometheus project was going to be "ambitious," and he's really "swinging fir the fences" on this one. So personally, I was anticipating a different film, set in the Alien universe. Of course, it's all Canon, and it makes perfect sense. I guess I was just waiting for an "origin" story for so many questions that I had had since the beginning. Such as, why are the aliens there? Who's the Space Jockey? Etc.

I’m happy to say that #AlienRomulus does everything a good sequel should do: - Give the audience something new. (Get ready for neat moments that breathe new life into the series.) - Identify what worked before and build upon it. (From the opening frame to the last, there’s a healthy balance of drama, sci-fi, horror, and action.) - Change the stakes. (Alvarez and his team crank up the tension, keeping you on the edge of your seat.) - Play with expectations. (Prepare for twists and turns that will keep you guessing.) - Add new, memorable characters. (They add depth to the story and leave a lasting impression on you.) FIRST IMPRESSION RATING: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Despite its paying attention a bit too much on paying homage to earlier films, it's got enough fun and exciting things to go support your local theater and just have fun. Hopefully this is just a tentpole for Fede to be able to make a sequel that has mostly all-new content, but lightly borrowing from Dark Horse comics and earlier films, bringing the space Marines and Predators back for a sprawling space epic. BUT script is King. Get that right, and keeping the look of Romulus - you'll satisfy both divided audiences, gain positive support because you're not just rehashing same thing. Less is better.

I thought the acid in zero gravity scene was cool. Like a ballet with a pulse rifle. I really liked this film, definitely my favorite since Aliens. I think my criticisms for it can be summed up by saying it overcorrected in getting the franchise back to its roots seeing as how the prequels were so divisive and didn't perform well at the box office.

The film would have been helped by a little more background on how these young people are friends, why they are allowed to take a ship to space with no issues, howq long this plan to scavenge has been in place. I just didn't care about the charaters except Andy. I literally didn't remember their names. I also wish that Rain was played by a Black person. I thought the dynamic between Rain and Andy gave slight slave/slave owner vibes, like how slaveowner parents could "give" a child slave conpanion to their children. Andy was the best part by far.

You are trying to tell me that all the synthetics in Alien movies are capable if not devious but the first time they make a black synthetic, he is dumb as dirt. From there the movie continuously went down hill until within the final act of the movie the plot armor was so unbelievable and contrived, I had to shake my head in disbelief. I said the same thing. I get that it was supposed to be damaged programing, but it felt super offensive to basically have him playing a mentally handicapped role. And while it didn't necessarily have anything to do with color, it's hard to not notice that aspect. Also, I like nostalgia call backs, but this movie overly relied on it. In fact, you could say 85% of the movie is a call back reference to one of the other 6 films. That abomination at the end wasn't even interesting for me, it was just gross and some uncanny valley effect. I think a few really cool set pieces stood out, namely the acid in zero gravity and the cocooned xenomorph between chestburster and full warrior. But way more questionable decisions than I expected after how much people were praising this as the 3rd best film in the franchise.

Alien makes sense if Ash is a bespoke unit or prototype for infiltration. That also helps explain why he is undetectable in his mannerisms, which is really just because the twist requires it on first viewing. None of the crew recognised him as a standardised weyland science android. Seems a risky move Bishop, David, Walter are all played with android mannerisms. Call is played with Winona Ryder mannerisms - and actually is undercover in the plot.

Notice after she gave birth to the hybrid, we assumed she was dead. Yet a crushed rat recovered with the same serum. She will be back. Plus all that black goo on the ship and the fact the science vessel had a radio no chance she doesn't get picked up by the company because of rook. My guess is she gets picked up and gets locked up and another outbreak happens, she takes andies head and put on another android and escape somehow.

@ttdkwta Месяц назад
I disagree. She died by the hybrid sucking her dry. I am pretty sure by consuming her the way it did, there is nothing left in her to regenerate. This is my biggest problem with how ppl are talking about the film. Most ppl are over looking all the tiny details that makes this movie suffer: 1. The chest burster is planted, born, and fully grown in 15 minutes. 2. In the room with all of the facehuggers they make noise and have heightened emotions/tempeture way before the facehuggers attack. 3. The Aliens stand around and stare, more than attack. 3. They don't give Kay a facehugger because of a plot device, and takes away with how ruthless they are supposed to be 4. When Rain and Kay get into the elevator (that has bug gate wholes) they are being "chased" but a xeno and sole facehuggers, yet the favehuggers can't get in through those big holes? 5. When Rain is reseting David in the nest, the xenos conveniently give her all the time she needs to do so for the plot. 6. When Rain falls down the elevator a Xeno catches her with it's tail (not impales, just safely catches her) places her on the ladder, then comes after her (wtf?). 7. After Kay injects herself and births the hybrid, we see no signs of extra mutation. In Rooks lab, they foreshadowed what happened later to the rat, but instead, the goo seemed to only effect the baby. Which makes no sense at all. These are a few of my gripes. The movie has more, but these are the ones that bothered me the most. I cannot stand when a movies tells me one thing, but the shows another.

If I'm being brutally honest, I was very disappointed with Alien Romulus and I kind of got my hopes up thinking that it would be a return to form; much like Prey was for the Predator franchise. The CGI for 1 character in particular was very off-putting, and it felt shoe-horned in, but in a way that was disrespectful to that particular actor. The copy cat moments also irked me a lot, specifically one shot that looked like it was a callback to Ripley in Aliens and a rather iconic image from Alien 3. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the visuals were quite good, and there were some stellar moments of tension; but it had way too many beats similar to previous entries only those were done expertly and these recreations were a little lack luster. All in all, it's probably one of the better entries since Aliens but that really isn't saying much. I would have preferred your idea of security forces or bandits accompanying the group because it would at least have given us more fodder for the Aliens. I can't help but feel the opening sequence or a variation of it would have been a more entertaining story than what we got. The 3rd act also fell right off for me, which is a shame cause you'd think they would learn their lessons from a rather bad movie that came before it.

Now why do you continue to make weird HP Lovecraft monsters that no one cares about and no one will remember in one month, stick with the HR geeker design and make some new cool intense scenes with the face huggers, like they did..... But give us more of that the acid in zero gravity was pretty cool, more of that more of that more of that... less of Prometheus and covenant and messing with the HR Giger alien design❤

@esovae THANK YOU!! I was seriously starting to feel crazy with all the reviews coming out and calling it "amazing" or a "masterpiece." Like I said I don't think Romulus is a bad movie, but it could have been executed better and we needed less cringe fan service. My heart broke with the line "get away from..." Anyway, I don't mind Prometheus as a stand alone, but it wasn't a good entry in the alien franchise and I do wish they would move on from that creator nonsense. Ridley really should have made an entirely separate trilogy instead of trying to mash together two ideas that feel very different from one another, if not at odds. One can hope they eventually draw from the plethora of lore floating around out there, and give us something that feels like the good Alien movies.

It doesn't serve the plot or move the story forward. It's tiresome to constantly see POC how be written to downplay to left up others. BIG CHAP. CHAP. The story is fine the way it is. They dont need a security detail at the decommissioned ship because, no one can leave in fear of dying because they are light years from anything else. Why waste resources when the ship will be destroyed on its own anyway.

This was a better movie than Covenant was, that movie I felt was the one that suffered more from fan service execution cuz it veered off from Prometheus sharply; I wanted to see that world build out more, but people bi+ch, moaned, and complained cuz they didn't get instant gratification with not seeing the Big Chap and so we got Covenant... I'm glad it was NOT ANOTHER complete RE-HASH of ALIENS. ALIENS is recycled in every other damn media, especially video games, comics, and other spin offs, and it's become tired, IDGAF, I said and will say it again, the ALIENS formula is T.I.R.E.D. Aliens is a masterpiece of Cinema, but there's only one ALIENS to me, all the other copies of it can sit down. I like the more HORROR take on the story; ALIENS was a Sci-fi Action Shoot 'Em Up Epic; NOT A HORROR film; ALIEN on the other hand, is Suspense Drama/HORROR draped in a Sci-Fi backdrop, truckers in space essentially. I love ALIEN and ALIENS, but for me, ALIEN will ALWAYS and FORVER hit harder for me.

This film was ruined by too much poor CGI (Ian Holm), the Prometheus lore, and the overuse of lines from Alien and Aliens. The ending was also ridiculous. That said, Cailee Spaeny was superb. She reminded me of Ripley a lot but didn't have the script to shine.

I felt the only bad cgi was rook but definitely agree with how great Cailee was.

@@MovieFiles Yeah, the Ian Holm synthetic looked dodgy. I expected better given the budget.

You are nit picking excessively. It is very hard to discern if you even liked the movie at all. You seem to want to re-write the entire movie. Being a fan of franchise since 1979, and remembering how ground breaking the original film was, it was great to see the Easter Eggs that were a homage to Alien & Aliens, the music, the kinetic model of the bird bowing up and down, Ash/Rook etc. It just seems that you seem to dislike so many of the things that made this film enjoyable. It also seems that so many content creators seem somewhat jaded and impossible to find any enjoyment in movies just for the sake of being entertained. I know it is your job to critique, but turn down the heat a little. Thanks.
