Every day in the U.S.A., people are sent to the penitentiary on conspiracy charges. For example, conspiracy to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine, or seditious conspiracy. That means that the powers that be can accuse YOU of conspiracy. Why not give it the goose-gander treatment? Its good and nice and fine to doubt so-called authority figures. Ignore the elite!
Widmer keeps talking about America as a "democracy." What, exactly is a democracy? How does it differ from a republic? Where does the word "democracy" appear in any of our founding documents? Why did the founders fear democracy (Federalist 10)? What was the main flaw of ancient democracies? How were both Socrates and Jesus killed by a democracy? In what speech does Lincoln ever refer to America as a "democracy"?
Did the ones that were, the ones that did that... Go to jail? No because they can get away with so much shit, Yet when a guy tries to kill himself (I'm saying guy cause I'm a guy) He goes to jail for suicide attempted instead of getting mental help.
And yes, the divisions in the country now make this feel more relevant. And it gives me hope that we might emerge from the present morass eventually (although I fear that I don't see a Lincoln-like leader to move us forward yet...).
Good job guys! Reading the book now. Americans seem to view either Washington and Lincoln as our greatest President. But I think the circumstances in which Lincoln was elected, the enormity of his political task given the cavernous divisions and hate in the country, cornpone wisdom yet often eloquent words embedded in the American psyche, and the final achieved results sway my opinion to Lincoln as our greatest.
