I love to bake pies. However, I stopped using Crisco because I researched the ingredients…soybean oil, fully hydrogenated palm oil, palm oil, mono and diglycerides, TBHQ, and citric acid. Tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, is an additive to preserve processed foods. And according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM), cases of vision disturbances have been reported when humans consume TBHQ. This organization also cites studies that have found TBHQ to cause liver enlargement, neurotoxic effects, convulsions, and paralysis in laboratory animals. Some believe BHA and TBHQ also affect human behavior. It’s this belief that has landed the ingredients on the “do not consume” list of the Feingold Diet. People who are at risk of circulation or heart conditions may also want to limit or avoid foods that contain added monoglycerides. Studies reported by the National Institutes of Health have revealed that butter-flavored products contain diacetyl, an unexpectedly deadly chemical. Please beware of unhealthy chemicals put in our food.
I wish I had discovered this channel earlier because I'd love to know what the difference is between regular ol' chocolate sheet cake & Texas chocolate sheet cake...Google was no help.
I just cooked to pie pumpkins yesterday. Make enough 2 pies with 6 Oz of puree. I enjoyed making my puree . Cooked in my instant pot with a cup of water. Took out and no wasting the flesh. It was so easy. The inside you took out the seeds then I twirled the strings like spaghetti. Smashed till smooth then put into the strainer to get liquid out. Very little mess. Love pumpkin pie.
My mom always made these, and I do now since she is gone. I love them, but we always put egg into the meat mixture to bind the meatball together, without, the meatballs tend to fall apart. I do cook mine on the stovetop, maybe baking in the oven will prevent meatballs from breaking. They do look good.
A little hint: freeze your yeast. I’ve put my yeast in the freezer for years. I buy the big 16oz block and keep it in a glass brown jar. I’ve used yeast from the freezer that had expired 2 years earlier and it worked just fine. If it wasn’t in the freezer it wouldn’t have worked. I learned this from someone on the internet.
Hopefully you will see this comment. I say that because your original airing was a year ago! LOL I worked as a waitress in a diner way back when. We served a dish called a Chili Size. It was a sauce similar to this over an open faced hamburger with bun. I thought of that when you mentioned that Melissa does not like hot dogs! I plan to make this for one of our office Wednesday lunches. What a great change (and surprise for the crew) from the canned chili. Thanks!
I'm not gonna lie. Being a lifelong Yankee when I saw the title I thought "well, that's not a nice name for a recipe"....then WHAM🤦♀️..."ohhhh, it's for GRAHAM crackers". My V-8 moment 😂
What is strange is buttermilk is for baking due to the butter fat content and I have a hard time finding whole buttermilk, I can find low fat buttermilk everywhere, if you use whole milk you can add in 3 Tbls of butter that will add the butter fat but you are still missing the flavor. Where I am only Braum's carries whole buttermilk. I also knock the sugar amount down to one cup in the icing otherwise its way too sweet. Also in the cake mix you can melt your butter in the water and as it comes to the boil add in your cocoa
I made this for dinner tonight. Wow...great flavor and nice varied textures. Two of the three sweet potatoes (golden) that I used were orange inside, but one was white all the way thru even though It looked the same on the outside. Have you ever run into that sort of thing before? It didn't seem to taste any different than the other 2 sweet potatoes.
I realize this is months old but maybe this'll help someone...a rolling boil is a boil that can't be stirred down. If you stir it & it stops boiling, even for a second, it isn't a rolling boil.
Listen, I’ve cooked for 53 years, winning my first pie baking contest at the age of 8. Can tell you, without a single reservation, (no pun intended) that this has to be the best tasting tomato recipe of all time. My husband, who used to think the words for vegetables were actually profanity in disguise, tried a small bowl of these tomatoes, and wants them on our Thanksgiving table! He says he’d rather have these tomatoes than actual stuffing. I almost fell over. He says these breaded tomatoes are better than any other sides at KFC, thinks they’d have been a great menu addition. I agree. I love hearing you tell the story of acquiring this recipe and I’m so so glad you shared it with us. Thank you again. ❤
About to pull mine out of the oven. So excited to try. The dough is so nice to work with. Il let you know how mine turned out. I have a feeling these are going to be a new family favorite. God bless you both.
I was raised on all of those custard pies also with, I think, coconut being my favorite. My mother usually topped them with meringue though, which took care of those egg whites. Thanks for bringing back delicious memories.
My Step Father was from Mt. Sterling too. His name was William "Bill" Damron. He was a nice man and is buried thee on the hill to the right of the local cemetery. I am going to bake your bread recipe tomorrow. Thank you and God Bless, Earl Wolfe Flagler Beach, FL
My grandma and mom were from Ohio. They would make fudge about like this, but they added marshmallow creme...the fudge turned out "sugary". It dissolved in your mouth almost like cotton candy...my mom passed away and no one has the recipe...
