My Grandma used to save cool whip and cottage cheese containers to do freezer canning and food storage. She also went thru the depression. I lived with my grandparents when I went to college. One night as we were washing up the supper plates, I opened the door to the cabinet with all of the containers and a rain of containers and lids came down on me and fell into the water. We had a good laugh and dried off all of the containers and lids and left them on the counter. I went off to do homework and totally forgot about what happened. The next day, I came home from class and my Grandma proudly showed me her cleaned out cabinet! We had another good laugh and hug and my Grandma never over packed that cabinet again. Great memories! My Grandma was a great cook and I learned many things from her. I cherish the time I got to spend with my grandparents.
Those memories with our grandparents are priceless and we enjoyed your story about the rainfall of containers. We've had the exact same experiences! It's wonderful that you have fond memories around that.
This is a Precious show. It's great nowadays how we can just take pictures of recipes out of magazines with our cell phones...no harm done. Love this!! ❤
I love hearing you and your wife tell precious things about your grandmother. My mother in law was also a lot like your grandmother, she was a young lady during the Great Depression Depression .She was a wonderful cook, known as that by everyone who knew her.A wonderful mother in law.
I appreciate your details, Tom. I can tell you were an excellent teacher. Whenever I watch a new to me RU-vid channel, it’s so obvious if the person was a teacher. Whenever you talk it’s part of an explanation or part of a story you tell, not the nattering on that happens on so many channels. Keep up the excellent content, Tom and Melissa. Oh my goodness, my mother-in-law had an ancient collection of plastic containers! She was so frugal she squeezed every cent until it screamed. She had to because as a pastor’s wife stretching the budget was a necessity.

Today is my grandma's birthday she would have been 115 years young. I'm laughing as you tell your story. My grandma had 2 drawers full of plastic silverware. Some still in plastic with the napkin salt and pepper. Thank you for the memories
Our grandmothers were not wasteful. And they kept things that could be used or reused again. They were way ahead of the recycle and repurpose movements.
Tell us all about Grandma. We love hearing how you grew up. I'll never forget when Chocolate Malto Meal came out on the market. My grandma (Mom's side) always served the 7 of us children oatmeal for breakfast. Boring, no frills. Then, one morning, when we came to breakfast, there were 7 bowls of Chocolate Malto Meal on the dinner table waiting for us. We always showed her respect; but this stuff was great. We asked for more.

My grandmother and mother always had cool whip tub and other things like cottage cheese, anything that had a lid, they would save. I was doing dishes two days ago and I was going to throw away my cool whip tub, decided to wash it and put some leftover dinner I had to store in the fridge. As I was placing it the tub in the fridge I came to realize, what I'm I doing???? I'm becoming my mother and grandmother! I don't save and reuse containers! Hahaha. I never in a million years would think I would reuse a cool whip tub, but I did :) Really enjoy hearing your stories of your grandmother! Thanks for sharing your video!

Thanks for the sweet memories of your grandmother. At the very first mention of the cool whip tubs I thought you were going to make fun of her but by the time you shared the hose and the perfume stories of your grandmother it was obvious they were endearing memories. I hope my grandchildren remember my ways.
We loved Tom's grandmother so much. We were very blessed to have her living so close to us and our children were able to walk from our house to their grandmother and great grandmother's house without leaving our three yards. That's very rare today and we are so grateful that we got to raise our children with that.
You talking about your grandmother and the hose reminded me: when I was a kid in the early ‘70’s, some of our church ladies made a wool quilt. They made little individual wool squares, sewed two together, stuffed them with cut up hose, sew the little square shut, then hand stitch the little squares together. How they came up with that idea, I haven’t got a clue. But they would have been your grandmother’s contemporaries. And that key lime square dessert is going to be on MY table this weekend. Thank you!
Tom said his grandmother would stuff hers with newspapers. One of my grandmothers was a quilter but I don't recall her stuffing them with anything. But I was in elementary school when she passed so I might not have paid enough attention to that detail. I do remember vividly her rocking chair with a little TV table beside it filled with squares for her quilts. I don't know what happened to her little table, but I have been blessed to have her rocking chair in my house all these years.
Love your “grandma stories”. Sometimes I think that we are very wasteful in our country. I bet your grandma was also very generous to others. I was told stories about how my grandma would feed hungry men that traveled through the country looking for work.
My Gramma Patrone was like that. We'd go visit my Grandparents in San Francisco back when CA was safe & normal. She always served Homemade Raviolis. They were delicious!!! I miss the times we spent together. Grammas are different now. Great Memories!!!!

God is so good and I'm convinced one of His favorite gifts to us is memories. I'm a scrapbooker and I do enjoy the creative outlet but i also love to look back through our albums and just take a walk down memory lane. It's the simple things in life that really are the most important.
My parents went through the Great Depression, consequently I have the habit of washing and saving anything that can be used again. When I make Lime Pie (often using whatever citrus I have handy) I put lime zest into the 'custard'. Another excellent heart-warming video. Thank you.
Hello Tom & Melissa - This looks like a great recipe. I bet that is very refreshing on these hot days. Our grandmother’s were so wonderful & we were blessed to know them, spend time with them & be loved by them. I loved my grandparents so very much. By the way my maternal grandmother used to always have a glass refrigerator dish in her refrigerator with home made Sandhill plum butter in it. No matter what meal we had there she would always set it out on the table to put on our bread. We would use it instead of butter many meals. Sometimes both butter & Sandhill plum butter. She always made it fresh & homemade. But nobody knew whatever happened to her recipe. Now I am the only one left in my family except one cousin. Other than that everyone else had passed. All grandparents, parents, all aunts & uncles , all cousins except one. My siblings are all gone as well. Cherish the memories many times I never thought that would be all I had left but it happens. Because it is just me and hubby, I cut this recipe in half to the best of my ability. One 8 0z Cool Whip saving 3/4 cup to use later. 1 yogurt, one Sweeten Condense Milk, 10 plus tablespoons of fresh lime, I added by tablespoon until it was limey enough for my tasty. I think I ended up with 12 tablespoons of juice. I put some zest in the filling. I used a Keebler Shortbread cookie pie crust. It held this amount of filling just right. Then I sprinkled the rest of the zest on top of Pie. Cooled in fridge. I used the leftover cool whip to dollop on top of pie slices. I tried to not butcher your original recipe ♥, just changed the crust and added more lime juice. It is wonderful !!!!!!!!

Tom and Melissa loved your memories of your grandmother. My grandmother lived thru the Depression and she always kept what she called her “good “ drawer where she kept extra stockings, underware and nightgowns. My Mother was the same way. Y’all brought these good memories back.

My favorite citrus fruit is key lime; years ago, I modified Ina Gartens lemon bars into Key Lime Bars; also has a cookie type crust; that recipe requires more work and more baking, however, I love it; your recipe is a simplified version of that and now I have to try your recipe, I never buy cool whip though, I make my own❤️❤️ Thank you so much for all of these wonderful summer recipes!!!!
Absolutely!! School starts back in our community this week and I will never forget the anxiety going back to school week always created in me as a teacher and when I was a student. I loved it but hated it at the same time. Funny how just thinking about it can bring those feelings back even now!

Hearing your memories about your granny made me sad, I,was born out of wedlock, thats was a Nono back then when my mother went to her house I was not allowed in, I had to sit on the front porch steps. I plan to make this recipe. By the way i did very well for myself.

I love the memory lane comments. I had a grandmother like that. Could put a full meal on the table for 10 without blinking. She never used a recipe all by feel or visually seeing the ingredients. Best fried chicken. Best Mac and Cheese. Best cookies and cakes. My father would show up with a bunch of guys after a day of fishing at like 10 pm. Everyone left full.
Sooooo satiafying watching Tom scrape out those containers. Watching others not do it makes me crazy so I blame Tom. lol Please don't stop. If he did, I'd have nothing to hold out hope to see. :)
I love hearing stories about our elders.....my mom hords food....and my sister filled my old camper full of plastic butter bowls..... when we have a reunion and there's plenty of cool whip I joke well we needed a new set of salad bowls... LOL

Ok...wow... These key lime bars look delicious!! Tom, I love the story you told about your grandmother. My grandmother and my parents all went through the depression. My father passed away first and then my mother passed away. They were in their 90's. Anyway we ran into the same situation when we cleaned out their home. My father especially saved everything. Every watch he ever owned, He saved. Every camera he ever owned. He was a camera buff. And my grandmother saved all of the margarine containers like your grandmother did. It must have been something going through the depression like they did. Anyway I'm definitely trying this recipe. Thank you so much.

Thanks for the sugar cookie tip. When I make a Key Lime pie I use Biscoff cookies crushed and melted butter as the crust, but will try the sugar cookie crust next time. Another recipe I must try. By the looks of it, this is a perfect dessert to take to a church potluck. I love hearing about your Grandparents and your family. I too have a small stack of Cool Whip bowls and lids. I use them to send leftovers home with my kids (and other people) when they come for a meal, and I don’t have to worry about getting the bowls back. I enjoy your detailed videos and just listening to you as you prepare the food.
Wow you talking about your grandma brought memories of my grandma. Grandmas always have that gift of having everything ready if it comes to food or having clothes mended they where the ones that everyone would call. that’s why they have that gift and love.
I enjoy hearing about how your grandmother did things because it reminds me of my grandmother so much. She too lived through the depression. She would save pieces of string, rubber bands, bits of paper and yes all the plastic containers food came in was used as Tupperware, so you never knew what you would find whenever you opened a container from the refrigerator. I have seen many of those drawers you just described filled with string, rubber bands, pieces of paper and don't forget the ties from the bread loaf!
