A slightly different take on walking / wild camping in the British countryside (mostly England, occasionally Wales and Scotland), involving tweed, wine, ancient history and babbling from an eccentric idiot.

I'm ashamed to say how long it has been since I found myself in England, somehow life here in Canada has gotten in the way of my best intensions. That said, I will be back and my motivation has largely been bolstered by your outstanding videos. Thank you Tweedy.

I discovered your channel a week or two ago and since then have worked through your entire "back catalogue" of videos, like I once did with Rush albums after discovering them far too late in life. Both have been an utter joy (although Rush win, obviously!) Ever thought of a Trangia for your cooking? As a fellow believer of cooking decent food outdoors I wouldn't be without mine.

"Ouse" might not be a very appealing name, but frankly I find "Breaky Bottom" even more disconcerting. Hopefully the curry sauce and cheesy chips didn't join in on this particular gastrointestinal theme! Haha! Also, I have a feeling that I'll be humming "I've got a lovely bunch of scabious" for the rest of the day...

Hello, Mr Tweedy! I've recently found your channel and the videos you make are a delight. It's lovely too see places featured on outdoors videos that are relatively reachable from where I live, though it's the unashamed and glorious middle class eccentricity that truly sets your content apart. I love the babble, the details about the surroundings, the attempts at more interesting outdoor food and the highly dissonant pairing of high quality wines with "roughing it", because why the heck not? I've only recently rediscovered the joys of escaping outside, and am sorely tempted to equip myself with a polycarbonate wine glass and a bottle of Gevery Chambertin next time I go.

Beautiful sunset, great commentary. The path I walk most days, allegedly part of the old road between Oxford and Poole, begins metalled, narrows to a macadamised track then to a footpath onto the Whitsbury Downs. Thank you.

Great video, Tweedy. My wife and I are having fun binge watching all of your Outdoors videos. You are giving us so many ideas. There’s a great village in Berkshire called Stanford Dingley. There’s a nice pub called the Old Boot and a lot of nice trails for hiking. Take care

I discovered your channel fairly recently and have been steadily working my way through your excellent videos. Now I know why I like them as any chap who enjoys a Laphroaig is a chap worth subscribing to on RU-vid. I know very little about wine (cheap and red are the characteristics I look for in a bottle) but I do like a single malt. In my humble opinion they don't get any better than those produced on Islay and bang for buck a 10 year old Laphroaig is unbeatable.Slàinte Mhath!

Great video. Lewes is a lovely town. Your pronunciation of poutine is admirable. I see it dished up a lot here but have never tried it. Always appears as though someone has mashed up a lot of leftovers. Your chips looked great. I miss Irish/ British chips. I remember over fifty years ago when there was a drive on promoting British wines. I seem to recall the 'wine critics' in the press gaining much amusement from the promotion. Well, no one is laughing now. Well done British vineyards.

Love these English countryside rambles Tweedy. Beautiful country. In Quebec (kaybec) it's pronounced poo-tin, not teen. :-) And the traditional or original is fries, (chips) gravy and white cheddar cheese curds.Yum! I assume the Breaky Bottom partaking portion will be on your English Sparkling channel?

A different perspective and mood of the South Downs, and the sunset looks very "picturesque"😊, thank you Tweedy! Will rewatch later more at leisure. BTW, you add to the picturesqueness of the scenery (so no need to get out of the shot). Both the views and you are equally pleasing to the eye. ☺

Hello Tweedy. Such a fine walk indeed. Plenty of interest and gorgeous landscape. You were indeed blessed with a fine sunset. This walk reminded me of watching Jack Hargreaves narrate an episode of ‘Out of Town’ on a Sunday. As a then city boy I was enthralled by visiting the countryside. The “illusion of a track” has gotten the better of my wife and I numerous times. I have learned my lesson and never suggest following them as they all too often reach a dead end, or as happened once, a near cliff edge. 🫣😳🥴 Cheesy chips and gravy. It’s got to be done. 👏👏👍😀

I read the title too quickly and thought you were going to walk from Southsea, near the downs but nowhere near Lewes!! Although Ive never been on this part it reminded me of Butser Hill. Fantastic shot of the sunset with the windmill and the maize maze or is that maze maize I really dont know!! Was the curry sauce made from vegetables only? Not sure about the cheese sauce though. A great days walk to your favourite vinyard, well done All the best!!

I get what you mean about tarmac roads that go nowhere other than a track or path that’s no use to vehicles! For me, it’s about an ancient route revealing its true nature and shrugging off the trappings of modernity! Pretentious, I know! Lovely sunset once again and those chips looked good!

Yes I think that's it - it's almost like a living piece of archaeology! The track wasn't named on the OS map but if it had been I'm almost certain it would have been called something like "Kingston Bostal", and at the point it becomes no longer usable by cars, we see it revert to its original state.

Good afternoon, Tweedy. A nice walk along lovely chalk downland. I can concur with the perils of walking through woods on chalky hillsides with numerous dense patches of hawthorn, blackthorn, and bramble bushes 🤔🤣 Always admire your "high standards" too - you never forget the ice bucket 😃👍🍾🍷

As a veggy myself I would suggest cooking outdoors will always involve a little unwanted animal protein, one has not betrayed one's credo if a suicidal little flying fucker insists on being part of your meal! I'm doing my best for all you critters, but if you insist on becoming part of dinner it's not my fault!

Takes me back to being 18. Me and a couple of mates finished our A levels and got the train and bus to Chepstow and backpacked the Dyke in July, stopping in farmers fields (with permission) drinking warm fresh milk, and the occasional pub back garden, pinching apples and pears (without permission)...good times! We did eat a lot of pot noodles as I remember...no Porcini flavoured ones though 😂 The Wye Valley is simply stunning. Lovely video Tweedy ❤

I like pubs, i like the countryside and I do like burgundy wine and you remind me of an old friend I unfortunately had to say goodbye to in Ireland last year. If I wasnt married already and if i was a woman you would have to watch out! The cooking bit could have been a little more Keith Floyd lol!

😂 Thanks Lars! In all my time on RU-vid I've never had an actual woman comment that they find anything about me even remotely appealing in that way. Even my wife can't stand watching my videos - one time she did she said "Why do you have to show your face so much?". As a result I assume I am the ugliest man on RU-vid, and therefore appreciate your kind (and amusing) words! Sorry to hear about your friend though. I'm obviously biased now but sounds like he was a great guy. Yes I agree the cooking segment here wasn't my most Floyd-esque - I had a bit of time pressure and was just trying to get on with it! I don't know if you've seen another recent video of mine where I was cooking at the base of the white cliffs of Dover - there was a bit more Floyd in that!

Hey Tweedy, I’ve been watching your Tweedy Pubs videos for 6 months and I just recently found your Tweedy Country videos. This is awesome!! My wife and I are binge watching them right now. If I saw an English gentleman wearing a suit cooking a meal in the Texas countryside I would probably think I’ve seen a mirage. I would then join you for some of that wine and have a nice chat. Thanks for all of the entertaining videos and please keep them coming.

As I resident of the southern edge of the Cotswolds you are unfortunately quite correct regarding the majority of pubs. The first question upon arrival will not be "What would you like to drink Sir/Madam" but "Will you be eating with us today Sir/Madam". An answer in the negative relegates you to second class status for the rest of your visit. They are all decorated the same, all serve the same overpriced food and all charge daft money for pub classics. Your fish and chips will be a twenty quid (Insert local craft brewery beer here) battered haddock with triple cooked chips (just do it right the first time) and "home made" mushy peas for a fiver extra. You will be offered "A trio of local sausages" with buttered mashed potatoes and a red onion jus, just call it gravy and don't charge me eighteen quid, veg once again an expensive add-on. Your Caesar salad will require an extra fiver if you want chicken. The vegetarian option will be an afterthought, usually mushroom risotto or pasta. The thing that really winds me up working for a local supplier is the mismatch between what is offered on so many menus and what they are actually buying, but I want to keep my job so I'll leave it there! There are a few good boozers amongst all this nonsense but they are getting harder to find. I think my local may be the only one in the region where your food options are crisps, nuts and pickled eggs! However it's full of friendly locals, shows the footy and has a real community spirit. Rant over, loving your work Tweedy!
