This is a masterpiece (like all songs from the Dire Straits), a musical and emotional journey, and the most moving song ever. Having survived a war as a child, this song speaks volumes to my soul…Mark’s astonishing storytelling (from the perspective of a dying soldier in the Falkland Islands War, adding some anti-war morals in the last verses) and musical genius send shivers to my whole being. The heyday of this song is Mark’s guitar mourning. Listening to this song (and the original video clip) should be mandatory to those who stand for wars or segregation…This was a masterclass in composition and performance by the tightest band on stage ever. Thank you for reacting to the best band ever, with top musicians, and to one of their best songs. These guys are Gods of music!

This is a masterpiece (like all songs from the Dire Straits), a musical and emotional journey. In this performance I love how all instruments are in harmony and enhance Mark’s nostalgic storytelling and musical genious... Mark always got inspiration to write from daily life events he would witness or live, then he would write masterpieces enhancing every unique skill his band musicians owned and would deliver us a hell of a ride. Thank you for reacting to the best band ever, with top musicians, and to one of their best songs. If you want to cry also listen to Brothers in Arms.

I had the privilege of seeing them live on 3 occasions- every gig the same musicianship- flawless. This was an awesome performance with everyone on stage in perfect harmony. Guy and Alan completing the picture. Loved seeing Jack Sonni up there too- right in the pocket! Terry’s drums were big, but it gave the set a really full sound. On the outro, the group sounded immense, John Illsley’s bassline was perfect. Loved the storyline- I visited the Spanish City a couple of times with my parents many years ago, and I never forgot it. Definitely brought a tear on, when it got to the reminiscence, before they started the outro. This was a masterclass in composition and performance by the tightest band on stage. It won’t be matched again! RIP Jack Sonni❤

I remember meeting some Algerians in France back in the '80s. They were living in the same apartment block as me and our paths crossed occasionally. I had my guitar with me and they overheard me learning to play this. One of them called him 'God's Guitar'. Whatever it is, that 'grace' seldom seems to last long, but when he had it, it was really something.

👉This sad folk song is about a Cossack who tells his bad dream and suspects that he will die. This song is well known in Russia - a folk hit. (The Russian folk soul loves melancholy, sad songs. Such songs are called 'crying.'). Diana hits the heart with her voice. I feel the fear and despair of the Cossack.Diana hits my heart with her voice. I feel the fear and despair of the Cossack. Just as the ice freezes under Diana's feet, my soul trembles with every step and these plaintive tones. The guest of honour, said Diana would one day be as famous as the well-known legendary Russian singer Ludmila Zykina. Marc Tishman, one of the singers and jurors, gave a wonderful rating. He did not see the Cossack on stage who has a frightening dream of falling from his horse, but he saw a beautyful bride who is about to be married and who is worried about how her life will go. The first existing recording of this song was made in the 1880s by a 75-year-old Cossack. Who were the Cossack? The word comes from the Turkic (not Turkish) 'quzzaq' which means adventurer or free man. - were escaped serfs and adventurers. (Difference between Turkic and Turkish - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PqxhtBecVeg.html ). The history of the Cossack is very changeable and painful. These fierce warriors, who are excellent riders, have an air of romance about them. They lived quite isolated in the southern steppe region of Eastern Europe, Ukraine and the Asian part of Russia. Living in the middle of nowhere, they have developed their own culture and tradition, which is expressed in a certain way of life, in their own songs, clothes, etc. Initially, the Cossack were oppressed by Catherine II and put up resistance. Catherine II soon recognized the advantages of border protection by light cavalry and assigned the Cossack their own territories on all of the empire's endangered borders. They provided the best riders in the Russian cavalry. Loyalty to the tsars was rewarded with a great deal of independence and special rights. But precisely because the Cossack always stood by the tsars, they were persecuted, exterminated or deported after the 1917 revolution. But the Cossack spirit, traditions and especially their music did not dissipate. Cossack songs are one of the most important elements of their ethnic identity. During World War II, Cossack in Europe volunteered under German command in hopes of returning home. After the German defeat, the Cossack were handed over by the Western Allies to the USSR (Stalin) in Lienz/East Tyrol on June 1, 1945, in violation of the Geneva Convention. Stalin pursued the Cossack and finally destroyed them. Many were deported to Siberia. During the Soviet era, especially in the Stalin era after World War II, the number of Cossack fell from an estimated 11 million to 140,000. Only in 1992 were the Cossack rehabilitated by Boris Yeltsin (perestroika). Only a few Cossack survived and are now trying to build a new life for themselves. For centuries, the Cossack kept to their customs, especially their music, an art of expression full of deep melancholy and exuberant temperament. These songs live on in the hearts of Russians. (www) * This song is sung by many Russian artists, the most famous being Pelageya (You should watch it): Ой,да не вечер/ Oh at this evening - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mMx228QVT3E.html * Ludmila Zykina (1929-2009) Подари мне платок/ Give me a handkerchief - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wn0Up3aXadU.html

Her voice is such an exceptional instrument. And she just keeps getting better at her art every year. No one on this planet has the breadth of performance or the depth of emotion that would match her. And, as you said, there is so much to her music that it is worth taking the time to watch her performances more than once. Thank you for your reaction. 👍 By the way, have you ever covered any of her versions of "Rechenka"?
