Yes. I have this issue. Had pixel phones up to 6 and then had to send the 6 back. 😢. Can't use switch oled or steam deck oled, really upsetting, considering the oled vita screen didn't have this issue and didn't have burn in. I've had to use Samsung A14 5g. As I can't afford to buy a more expensive phone otherwise
Honor is the best if you need comfort to your eyes. I have sensitive eyes and i can say you since i have started using magic 5 pro i am very satisfied and even in complete dark room also it is very comfortable.
In order to significantly reduce PWM flickering on iPhones with oled screens just reduce White Point. By enabling "Reduce White Point," the overall brightness of the screen is reduced by adjusting pixel values, gamma curves, and color spaces to overall reduce the brightness of white and light colors, thus minimizing the reliance on PWM for dimming. Reducing White Point is a software wise option (indirect), whereas DC dimming works direct and is only possible when the hardware controller supports it (it actually lowers the current of the screen). Reduce White Point is a great option for people who are more sensitive, but not intolerant to PWM. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce White Point. A good starting point is 95%. For stronger dimming effect (to be used in extreme darkness) use 100%. Finally, set the Brightness slider to at least 50% or above. This ensures that the perceived flickering from PWM is a lot less. In order to quickly control White Point reduction (on/off), you will need to add White Point to Accessibility Shortcuts. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut > Add Reduce whitepoint (blue check mark). Consequently you need add this Shortcut to Control Centre for quick access. Go to Settings > Control Centre > Add Accessibility Shortcut (+). Congratulations! You can now quickly enable and disable White Point reduction.
I am looking to purchase a surface pro and wondered if you know if the LCD screen or the Oled screen use pwm and what affects they may have? From a sensitivity perspective My eyes are greatly affected by Samsung fold 4. I must use my prescription glasses to look at my phone. Otherwise I get blurred vision. Thanks!
Hello, Moe I have one more question. I recently replaced the display on my Poco X4 GT while I save up for a Xiaomi 14. The new display looks very good, almost like the original, but it's not as bright. However, it causes my eyes to hurt. I checked for flickering by using my camera at a shutter speed of 1/16,000 second, and the display doesn't flicker. I've also turned down the blue light and used reading mode, but the issue persists. Do you have any ideas about what might be causing this?
So you didn't have a problem before changing your display? That's odd. I am not sure why you are getting headaches. It's also hard to detect pwm flickering with a normal camera.
@@MoeZainal I was very happy with the original display-no eyestrain, no headaches. I use a Fuji X-E2s with the max shutter speed and higher ISO, and I can see the bands moving on my wife's OLED phone, but not on my X4 GT. Could it be the blue light or any settings?
I had that option with my OnePlus 8 or 9, I changed the device when they decided to remove that feature with their update. Not sure about their new release. I do not trust OnePlus anymore tbh. Have you always had headaches when using smartphones?
@@MoeZainal I was using midrange samsung phones previously like A55 , s23fe . I don't have any issues with these phones. But when I switch to OnePlus mainly , like I had the OnePlus Nord 3 , one plus Nord ce 4 and now the OnePlus 12 is getting the same minor headaches. In between I used OnePlus 12R , no headaches on this phone .I don't know what's going on this screens. Please suggest some good tips for this issue I'm liking my OnePlus 12 but due to headaches I'm worried about.
@mohammadashraf1247 the safest bet is using any smartphone with an LCD screen, I believe the Nord uses an LCD screen display. This is the safest way for extremely pwm sensitive individuals.
I bought OnePlus12 a week ago and same suffering from eye strain specially when the brightness in nearly mid level I noticed the screen keep flashing in right side of the screen not sure if this issue only with my phone, anyway I requested for return yesterday and looking for another option. BTW I tried the anti faker option but it still did not work with me
Bought new 2024 ipad M4 11, 3 days later I had to return, severe watery eyes and headaches. Now got an ipad 6 mini, just fore bed time media consumption, oh boy, it is the best. For me, my eyes really likes IPS LCD panels.
My 3 years old Mi11 Ultra also has AntiFlicker DC Dimming. Maybe Options like HDR/120hz will disable DC Dimming, so on Mi14ultra the Options need to be checked. Also im not sure if DC Dimming is reducing the Lifetime of the Display more. I dis not notice Color Differences between DC/Pwm
hello sir. thank you for your honest opinion about this issue .i was wondering if you could help me to recommend a decent mid-range phone around a55 budget price. what would you choose? i have watched many phone reviews and they all say great things about their product that they are advertising. i am so confused. i would appreciate if you could guide me. ( my chief priorities are : screen ,battery, storage of 512 gb or having a memory slot)
i am sorry to tell you that Xiaomi 14 ultra don't hav DC dimming option but 14 has as you mentioned, because I went to Xiaomi store today to check this. The following device checked and don't have option for DC dimming (Anti-flicker mode): 13T, 13T pro, All redmi series. i.e. only Xiaomi 14 has anti-flicker mode
I bought the Poco X4 GT thanks to this channel and I really enjoy it-no eyestrain at all. Unfortunately, a few days ago, it fell down the stairs and broke. So, I started searching again and came across a recommendation for the Xiaomi 14. Is its OLED screen with DC dimming as flicker-free and easy on the eyes as the LCD screen on the Poco?
I'm sorry to hear about your phone, I currently use Xiaomi 14 with DC-Dimming anti-flicker enabled and it's working well for me. Everyone's sensitivity is different and the only way to know is to try the device.
@@MoeZainal Excellent! I will buy it and test it. I hope it works for me. I really miss my Poco X4 GT. It wasn't premium, but it was good enough for me, and I was recovering my eye health. Right now, I'm using a loaner OLED phone and starting to experience eye strain again. Thanks for all the help!
@arturomty9969 anytime, I hope it works for you, keep in mind that you might experience some eyestrain/headaches when you first setup the device, try keeping the brightness at max until you are able to enable the DC-Dimming anti-flicker feature. Good luck buddy!
I have noticed also that the black of the oled screen are just too strong witch creates too big contrast that also gives me a lot of eye strain. If you can I suggest also making the blacks more brighter has helped me a lot with oled eyestrain.
Fair warning... Don't go spending hundreds on a phone that promises a software feature. Oneplus removed it, so can all the others. Also, the Nothing Phone 1 was very good at launch, it didn't flicker. Then because the screens were breaking that way, they released an update that reduced max brightness and introduced PWM. This is so upsetting and has been an issue for years now. Got my first eye issues with the Oneplus 5T and since then I've also become very photosensitive, generally very sensitive to light. This should be taken more seriously, but sadly no business will benefit from catering to a minority. There have been hundreds of "success stories" on forums by now, about phones that seemingly worked for people. Guess what, all of the posters of those topics took their words back and went back to finding a phone. I'm willing to bet money that this Xiaomi will eventually stop working for your eyes.
God bless you for this video....I was just just thinking OLED panels will solve the nauseating, migraine n loss of balance that average LED panels have been giving me over the years. Ryt now m using an old 2009 LCD monitor and a window 7 laptop with ccfl LCD display panels. N now with this video, I don't know what I m going to when the laptop eventually dies. Funnily enough, a lot of people think m crazy whenever i tell them that the LED PWM is making me sick n sensitive to light. This shows how small we really are. M in Nigeria, West Africa. Nice Job sir
Moe, I’m still having issues with my newly bought Xiaomi 14, which I purchased on your advice. I'm using it at the lowest brightness setting. Does the anti-flickering work at the lowest brightness, or should I increase it to mid-level? At what percentage should I set my phone's brightness for optimal performance without straining my eyes?
@@MoeZainal Yes, I already enabled the DC dimming feature in the display settings by switching anti-flickering from regular. However, it’s still straining my eyes. When I use my iPhone 11, I don’t experience any discomfort at all.
I remember getting slight eye strain when I was setting up the device, but when I finally was able to enable DC-Dimming the strain went away the next day. How long has it been since you have enabled the anti-flicker option?
@@MoeZainal It's been two days since I started using the phone. I used it for roughly three hours yesterday, and my eyes were straining a lot. Hopefully, my eyes will adjust to the device as time passes. I had great expectations that it would not strain my eyes, but I am quite disappointed at the moment. I hope that it will improve. I wanted to ask you: I have been using the phone at zero brightness. Should I increase it to 50% or beyond, or should I turn on auto brightness so that the anti-flicker will work?
I was thinking of buying a new phone to replace my 2018 LG G7 w/ IPS LCD. It's worrying that you could be wasting money on tech that makes you suffer with use. 😮
Chinese phone companies, don't have this issue, because any phone from them hsa at least (2000) pwm rate , and that's don't effect on us . BTW Samsung, apple... Etk , their phones maximum pwm rate it's (230 )
Dude thank you so much for covering this topic. I have the same nokia for years bc i cant update to a new phone. Hopefully they'll make changes soon. Have you found anything new that works?
Right now best phone in PWM dimming phone is Honor magic 6 pro, i recently switched from S24 ultra, its a definatly great device for eyes..after lot a drama with my working at nights schedule, my eyes are getting more fatigue and strain. After switching to 6 pro i am seeing progress.. hopefully this will help.
Thanks for the update. Do you have recommendations for laptops? I'm getting confused with all the different options; for example, anti glare, anti-reflective, and glossy and figuring out which is best for PWM sensitivity.
i am sure that dc dimming is automatically enabled on lower brightness because i am having no headaches or eye strain. i think xiaomi 14 ultra is best for me. perfect phone
It's wild to me that these big tech companies aren't addressing this issue or making a feature to change the pmw setting. I just stumbled upon this while doing research as to why my brand new ipad was giving me migraines. I just bought a ipad pro 11" 4th gen to use for graphic design. Worked on the illustrator application on the ipad for about 2 hours and had a terrible migraine for about 5 hours after putting the ipad away. The following day I decided to use the ipad outside on my porch (thinking that maybe being inside in dim light was the issue) and after about 30 minutes of use I could feel my head starting to hurt again. As I walked back inside I felt terrible motion sickness and dizziness. I'm trying to get over the fact that I spent about $1,000 on something that I can't even use due to this issue.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Well said, it's unfortunate that big tech are not paying attention to this matter while Chinese brands like Xiaomi are integrating solutions such as adding a DC-Dimming anti-flicker toggle in the display settings. Why can't Apple and Samsung do the same?
Xiaomi 14 series is known for the foggy/condensation lens issue which is widespread across all continents where they're sold. Plenty of videos and people complaining about this hardware fault on forums as well. How is yours holding up?
I heard that too. Humidity in my country is around 47% today, and I still did not face this problem. I faced it once with my Sony A7III with the 24-105 lens, the photography equipment was in a AC controlled environment and went out to shoot early in the morning, the lens fogged up and I had to wait for it to go away. I suppose it could happen when you have big glasses. But I still did not have this issue with my Xiaomi 14.
Try to enable extra dim, eye care, and reduce brightness. I think white colors on oleds annoy me the most. On Samsung I am able to make night mode much stronger than on moto
im also very sensitive to pwm, currently iphone 11 and iphone SE is healthy for pwm sensitive user like me...tried many but yet to find one android ips/amoled that doesnt give me headache and migraine...will look into xiaomi 14
