I've worked intermittently on a full review of the EVO 14-S, but it looks like I delayed too long for it to be particularly helpful. The EVO 14-S is now completely gone from Origin's website. So in lieu of a full video review, here are a few important points that would have been in the review: The EVO 14-S does not appear to be a product developed by Origin; rather, it seems to be a relabel of the TongFang ID4H1 (www.hk.tongfangpc.com/thin-4h1-series/). I found this out from Alan Wong on RU-vid (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tSRllALsRwE.html). The TongFang model has been updated with newer internals but apparently Origin didn't see value in continuing with it themselves. Using the information about the actual OEM behind it, I found some other models that use the same base design. The only one I found that is still available for purchase in the US market is the Malibal Aon S1 (www.malibal.com/shop/laptops/aon-s1). I have never heard of this brand before, but if they can indeed offer a nearly identical laptop with nearly twice the battery capacity, it would be a pretty compelling package, because... Battery life is a major downside for this device. In my testing, I can get just over 6 hours under fully ideal circumstances: 20 db mode, minimum brightness, sitting on my wallpaper in airplane mode. Connecting to Wi-Fi, switching to 30 db mode, and raising the brightness to a comfortable indoor level drops it to 4-4.5 hours. Competing thin and light laptops routinely double this figure. Feel free to drop a comment with any additional questions you have!

Any idea about how long the battery lasts? Origins' website states "up to 16 hours" when using the EVO14-S and I feel skeptical about whether or not this will be an investment compared to an Apple Macbook pro or air with an M1 or M2 processor that boasts more than the 16 hour mark but their ecosystem is severely limited.

Origin's claims are very optimistic. Like, sitting on the Windows desktop at minimum brightness I can't get half that. It's got its strengths, but battery life is not among them. 😬

Thanks for the reviews! I'm looking at the NT-14 which I think is the exact same machine with a different name. Two questions if you have time... 1 - Can you charge yours via USB-C? 2 - Is the top of the machine when the screen is closed as shiny as it looks in the video? In the Origin photos it looks matt, but perhaps there was a plastic film on it here. Based on your reviews and what looks like a good spec, I'm thinking of ordering, and trying to decide if I should take them up on the UV printing to stop it becoming a finger print magnet! Cheers
@StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts Год назад
Yep, NT-14 is basically the same. Mine even has "EVO14-S/NT-14" printed on the bottom label. 1. It accepts power from both type C ports, specs say up to 100W but the power limits are lower than using the included 90W adapter. (By default they're crazy low, but there's a poorly worded setting in the Origin control panel that will get it closer to full power.) 2. In the unboxing it still has the plastic covering on, the actual material is a nice matte finish and hides fingerprints well. I'd look at the UV printing as a purely cosmetic option.

Senn Hd280 vs Sony 7506 vs audio technica m40x ? Whats your choice?

As not a DJ myself, I'd expect them to be pretty well suited to that, although there are other similar headphones that offer more earcup motion which could be useful for that. RTings has a recent roundup of headphones they'd recommend for DJing so that'd be worth a look.

The solid build quality is what drew me into these. The only downside is after a ton of wear the ear cups often lose their material. In general I'm pretty happy with it. Though Origin's battery life claims are quite optimistic. So if you spend more time away from an outlet than I do I'd advise going to a more traditional ultra portable or gaming laptop. You'll be able to find strong battery life in either direction. But you won't find much that's this powerful and this light.

I wouldn't count on it. You'd think it'd last quite well on the 10W 20 dB mode but it still seems to drain faster than I'd expect. (I'm intentionally vague as I don't have detailed testing on battery life.) If you need reliably good battery life, I'd steer you towards an LG Gram for a similar lightweight chassis or a Zephyrus G14 for similar gaming performance, both of which are consistently reviewed with strong battery life figures. Another approach would be to plan on a USB C power bank to extend its life.

On my unit, the right side of the palm rest next to the trackpad gets warm when the SSD is installed in the slot under it (which is how it shipped). I will also note that while I don't know what material the chassis is made of, it feels more thermally conductive at least on the display back compared to my old plastic Inspiron laptop. Thanks for the video. I'll be very interested to see some proper battery tests... The battery just seems far too small to get anywhere near what Origin are claiming... Also you haven't really covered the quality of the product. Looking at your unboxing video and how everything was lose and seemingly thrown together, it concerns me that the laptop is too? it looks very 'plasticy'?
@StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts 2 года назад
Considering the low power levels in the quiet modes, good battery life seems plausible. I considered getting the HP Pavilion Aero 13, which pairs a 15 W Ryzen CPU with a 43 Wh battery and posts strong battery life results. With Intel 12th gen limited to 10-15 W and with a 53 Wh battery, good battery life seems achievable without dGPU tasks running. Build seems good so far, seems like plastic but good quality plastic. It does also seem more thermally conductive than my old laptop, so I wonder if it's a magnesium alloy. (Really wish Origin had more details published about it...)

Great review! and thanks for taking the time to make this, as this might be the only one that currently exists for whatever reason. this model checks so many boxes for me, since I want a non "gamer" styled laptop, but with a dedicated GPU for live visual art stuff and other things. Full sized hdmi/sd slot is awesome, 16:10ish aspect ratio, upgradable hardware... This has so many benefits for me over the razer models I was considering. question though, how is the build quality? know if the chassis is plastic or aluminum, or something else? origin's specs aren't exactly the most detailed
@StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts 2 года назад
I'm pretty pleased with the build quality, seems to be plastic but feels pretty good. Though I'll be in a better situation to judge build quality once I get a replacement screw from Origin. The back panel has surprisingly few clips, making it easy to open up, but with the screws in place it seems pretty solid. I am slowly making progress on a detailed video on the various performance modes, but as a preview, it's primarily a thin & light with a higher performance ceiling.
