My thoughts on the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro studio monitor headphones, the headphones that got me started on high-ish-end audio. They're an excellent pair of headphones, but not a particularly good choice for the normal consumer.
Old Model: amzn.com/B000065BPB (it has the new picture, but Amazon claims that it's the old model)

I went from only ever using cheap headphones and knowing nothing about high end audio...to a pair of 280's many years ago...and I was super blown away. I'd never experienced anything like it before and I loved it. And you talk about how it isn't overly bassy, but for me the bass was insane. Going from cheap headphones to these was a massive jump...just mind blowing! It's been years now since I've had a decent pair of headphones...and the new version of these is at the top of my list.
@StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts 3 года назад
I still don't think the bass level is high, but man is it good bass! A classic case of quantity vs quality. It's got that combination of deep, rich, and punchy bass that still make them a ton of fun with genres like dubstep.
@manoaralte
@manoaralte Год назад
I'm not sure if you're talking about the same headphones because the 280's don't have bass in them at all unless you drive the EQ to insane levels. I search for the lower end frequencies when I use them.
@twitchster77
@twitchster77 Год назад
@@manoaralte Nope...I'm talking about the 280's. It might have been that they were my first decent pair of headphones I'd ever used. And yeah, they blew my freaking mind back then. Going from cheap headphones to the 280's was a massive step up for me and the bass absolutely did impress the heck out of me. I ended up getting a pair of Apple Air Pod Max. I kind of wish I still had my 280's so I could compare them. Maybe the bass really isn't as mind blowing as I remember them being. I do also tend to use equalizers that bump up the bass, so that makes a big difference as well.
@manoaralte

@@manoaralte You seem to me like you've got much higher expectations out of your headphones than I do. Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all! I love my Max so much though. I know 100% that there's better sounding headphones out there, especially for the price I paid...but I'm okay with that.

Excellent video, it is refreshing to hear a thoughtful review that distinguishes casual from professional applications. For $100 you really can't get a better set of studio headphones. You're right on with the glasses (in my case it was wearing hats) breaking the seal and losing bass. I kept mixing way too much bass into tracks until I realized this myself. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for putting this into perspective for me. I am not very familiar with audio and the specs of things. I just like or dislike what I hear. I've been using the HD280s for over four years now and I've loved them and felt like most other headphones sounded "wrong" and artificial by comparison, but I thought that may just be me. So this review really helped with understanding that better, thanks!

There are several other headphones that have a very similar sound signature to the 280's, both within Sennheiser's own lineup and from other brands. If you're ever looking for similar sounding headphones in a different form factor, I think you'll find detailed reviews from publications like rtings.com to be quite helpful

Great video. I own over 20 headphones of all prices. Once I heard the 280 pro I bought 3 pairs of these one for each audio room I have. These are my best and used headphones I own but I do prefere closed headphones more then open. With some music it's like having sub-woofers on my ears without sacrificing much other frequencies. Just so amazing and enjoyable.

Great to find an intelligent, cogent thinker. Excellent discussion. I have the HD380 phones. I think they’ve been discontinued now, but I’m not sure why. Reviews from ~2012 say the 380s are more comfortable and come with a case and a removable cord. Other than that, they apparently have comparable sound to the 280s. Maybe Sennheiser just decided the two products were indistinguishable sonically and the 380s cost them more to produce?

Huh, that's really interesting. I'd heard about the 380s but didn't realize that they had a detachable cable. Shame Sennheiser didn't bring that change over to the refreshed 280 design...

The solid build quality is what drew me into these. The only downside is after a ton of wear the ear cups often lose their material. I've gone through one set and the replacements are going to need to be re-replaced. I use them for gaming and watching random RU-vid videos and I don't really know what else I'd get if these ones eventually fail.

And the older 2 channel Yamaha receiver I am using in my office next to the PC, just for headphones, has a variable loudness knob that i find is good to tweak the two sets of headphones I do use. Thanks, I really enjoyed your review. The daughter likes my 380s but I want them back so we are researching a pair for her. The main criteria is durability. Replaceable cable is a big plus. The 280s boast 'durable construction', but can you suggest any other over ear headphones around the same price that are more durable. She's purely into music enjoyment, but she's happy with the 380s flatness.
@StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts 3 года назад
If smaller earcups are okay, I'd look at the ATH-M50x. RTings actually rates them higher than the 280s for critical listening and neutral sound and they come with three removable cables. Personally, I found them to be too small for my ears and to have a bit too much treble (especially on EDM tracks), but a lot of other people really like them. You could also look at the more affordable ATH-M40x or the Sennheiser HD 569, which seems to be effectively the successor to my HD 598 Cs. Of course, if she mainly listens at home it might be worth considering open-backed headphones like the HD 599.

I would probably gravitate towards the DT770's or HD 280's due to both of them being very well respected in high-end audio circles. I'm sure the other ones are quite good, but I expect there's a reason that those two have gained the widespread praise that they have. Another consideration is that the DT770's might be a bit more comfortable than the others due to the soft, microfiber-like ear cushions. Heat buildup is one of the big detractors from the comfort on the HD 280's and that material should help with that. Though this may also somewhat reduce noise isolation. And for me personally, I don't think the DT770's are as deep as the 280's so they wouldn't fit my ears as well. But really, I don't think you can go wrong with any of those - they all look like very respectable headphones that should serve you well.

I have a relatively small head, and after trying the ATH m40x for a day, which caused me a migraine due to total lack of clamp force by the pads thus 100 percent possible force by the headband. After doing some research online I found that sennheiser HD series, in particular this model, the 280, can handle a small head quite well compared with others, so I just might have no other choice but to go with those. I'm a casual listener, but do enjoy a good clear sound, when I listen to music, I really listen, and not just make myself a background noise while doing other things, as most people do. I use Bandcamp for lossless flac files, and can distinguish easily from those ones, to a general youtube music clip. I was also considering buying the HD 350bt, but people tell me they wouldn't sound as good as monitor headphones. What's your ideas? By the way, genre wise, I like all kinds of music, anything I can find that sound good to me. I loved the sound of the ATH m40x, but sadly those will be returned. These are the prices where I am(Taiwan): Sennheiser HD 280 - 158usd (official importer) Sennheiser HD 598 - 218usd (not official importer) ATH m40x - 105usd (to be returned) Sennheiser 350BT - 140usd (official importer) Sony mdr7506 - 137 usd By the way, I also searched for the beyer770, they should be slightly better for smaller heads, but some people still report the same issue with them. Sony mdr7506 might also be a good solution. Cheers.
@StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts 3 года назад
If you're attuned to the differences between flac and RU-vid audio, I'd expect you wouldn't be likely to notice the shortcomings of Bluetooth headphones, with the possible exception of ones that support high quality codecs like LDAC. Personally, I've never tried flac, but I think I have noticed some compression artifacts with my Galaxy Buds+ when using them with AAC, the highest quality codec they support on non-Samsung devices. The 280s will probably be the closest in sound to the M40x. Worth considering how important it is to match that sound. If it is important, you might check out RTings' frequency testing as a precise way to find headphones that very closely match the M40x. I do also have a pair of HD 598's and really like them, especially for comfort. However, you'll need to make sure that open backed headphones will work in your case, because if you ever want to use them with moderate ambient noise, all of it will come through and make it harder to hear your music. It's also worth looking at their successor, the HD 599. Here in the US, you can't really find the 598's at reasonable new prices, so the 599 (or another current open-backed model) is a better option. (I'm also not sure how well the design of the 5xx series would with with a small head...) Also worth thinking about your source. The HD 280, 598, and 599 are all low-impedance enough to be powered by normal devices without major sacrifices to quality. However, the DT 770 is available at several different impedances - I'd expect the 250 ohm model to require a dedicated amp to sound good. You'll want to keep an eye on that for other headphones you might look at.
@rbmanb
@rbmanb 3 года назад
@@StephensThoughts Thanks for your detailed comment. Taking into account the steep price I'd have to pay here for the 598/599, it's not much of an option. I'm aware of impedance and generally trying to avoid any headphones above 70ohm. Maybe in the future I'll invest in a dac, but I'm not there yet. Having a similar sound to the m40x would be nice, but not of of top priority, as I don't have much experience with other monitor headphones sounds, it would be hard to compare. For the time being my top priority is to find a set which fits my head, at the same time having high quality, neutral and clear sound.
@StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts 3 года назад
With those criteria, I think the 280's will do quite well, but I also don't have a ton of experience with a lot of different headphones, so I'm sure there are other great choices. And perhaps some that would work a bit better for non-stationary listening - the 280's fixed cable makes it a bit awkward 😅

@StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts 3 года назад
I've never heard of the DT150's before, but I know Beyerdynamic is a very respectable audio brand. I have also seen their DT770's in studio settings, though you'd want to look into audio leak with those since they have velour earpads. I did notice that the DT150's are (a) quite a bit more expensive and (b) much higher impedance, meaning they're much more likely to require a strong aftermarket amp to drive them. Overall, I'd hazard a guess that the HD 280's are probably better value for the money, even if the DT150's do sound better. Either way, it's ideal to try out audio devices before you buy since audio is so subjective.

Trying to decide between these and the AT ATH-M50x. I'll be using them strictly for podcasting and doing all the post and mixing on my Beyerdynamic DT 770 PROs. @StephensThoughts
@StephensThoughts 4 года назад
I have a bit of experience with the M50x's. I found that the smaller ear cups made them rather uncomfortable on my large ears. That said, a lot of people find them quite comfortable. The biggest difference I remember in terms of sound is that the M50x's had much more pronounced treble, which I found to be a bit harsh on the EDM tracks that I tried. One undeniable advantage for the M50x's is ear cup motion - they can move a lot more in a lot more directions than the 280's. But I myself think I'd prefer the 280's for podcasting. Though without having much experience with the DT 770's, I'm not sure how either would compare to them.

A month ago my wife threw out my ancient, 12 yrs old but lovely Sennheiser on ear 'phones HD20 I think. She overheard me complaining they were broken - (I meant the cable was broken and I was going to order a new one) I have apologised for her mistake and we are speaking again. I'm now agonising over which replacement headphones to buy. Limited choices here in Vietnam, Audio Technica ATH M40x, Sennheiser HD280 Pro or Sony MDR 7506. The reviews of the Beyer Dynamic DT 770 Pro sound wonderful but that is certainly the top end of my budget. My main purpose is piano practice, and perhaps swapping piano recordings with my daughter in Norway. We both started our piano journey together 4 years ago. Except now I am 79 she is 13 yrs old. Any advice from an experience player such as yourself would be so appreciated. Kind regards, John MacMillan

If you were happy with your previous Sennheiser headphones, I'd probably recommend sticking with the 280's. The M40x, 7506, and DT 770's are all quite popular and well-respected, but each brand tends to have a somewhat different approach to sound. I will also say that I think I've at least briefly tried all of those and found all but the 280's have uncomfortably small ear cups for my ears. Clearly they're pretty comfortable to plenty of other people though.

If you're looking for other over-ear headphones, I quite like my HD 598 Cs, although they've been discontinued. I believe their successor is the HD 569. HD 599 are very different headphones with a different focus and an open backed design. I have their predecessor, the HD 598, and I'd favor them over the 280's for more acoustic genres, especially orchestral and choral music, but I'd favor the 280's for EDM due to the low bass capability.

A great job on the video, nicely done, very well spoken, very clear. That all said.. Please don't take offense at the next, I mean only constructive criticism here. It is obvious from your analysis of the headset that these are either your first real pro headset, or maybe you haven't been in sound\music long as an engineer or "mixer". ears get warm and sweaty after a few hours... ...No shinola. You have air moving in that little pocket around your ear at 20-20000 hz, there's going to be some friction, and the longer you wear them, the more heat from your body builds up in there as well; not to mention that this is an electrical device that moves a plate to push the air. Short version, you have at least 3 principles where you will find out that heat is going to build up, and 2 of them you can learn from either 6th or 9th grade physics. The third you learn in the robotics club. I'm not trying to offend you, but to make a blanket statement that "your ears will heat up after a few hours" isn't just stating the obvious, you are also stating the result of very bad practice. First, the physics of the device, if you know the physics of sound, of body heat, or of electronics, provide the basis for some heat buildup. Second, if you mix a lot of sound, or have studied it at all, you know that spending more than an hour on any mix or practice puts you in a state where your ears quickly begin to lose their effectiveness. Now on to the design... Did you check the website at all? Did you look online for earlier models to compare the construction? I know you checked for the later versions, well done. But, there's a lot more to them than the next iteration. I have used several models, all with similar resulting sound quality before my own changes (surgical procedures to make repairs), and of course, I now have these, which have taken a beating but the sound quality is still awesome. I have read up on each set I have used, so I would know what to expect in their construction, what to listen for to make sure they were functioning properly, and where they might fall short so I can adjust to that. Here is a short bit on these: True that these were "originally" designed as a studio headphone, but soon after the initial design which is a much older build without solid state tech, the need to be more mobile-friendly took Sennheiser back to the drawing board. They devised a set that could be folded. Then they continued with adjustments to the outer frame as space saving became more and more a common request. Today, they not only fold, but the pads can spin flat or flip over for one ear listening. You can adjust to fit a space that is wider in one dimension or another, but unfortunately, not both. However, by leaving out the dual adjustment of fold and flat, they were able to limit the hanging wire to one side only, with full phase correction electrically. Using a board with smaller components keeps the outer muffs flatter, allowing more space for the cushion (thicker and more comfort while allowing more air space for wider sound response capability), all while widening the pad so it should fit just over most ears easily. These have a vocal response curve, but in the base tones, while not flat with the rest of the response curve, they are tapered almost flat until 18hz where they drop very quickly. At the top end, they are relatively flat for a response curve, showing their taper at 18khz only slightly, and holding a very consistent taper (from my own tests with several microphones, including ref mics) up to 47khz. I then skipped upward to 70khz and continued to 140, the curve did show some erratic points with some mics, but not all, at 112khz and 123khz, otherwise, they were round\flat and predictable. I would suspect that they would respond well at even higher quality sound impulse rates, but much higher than 192khz you risk damaging the cones from vibration, so I wouldn't recommend it. On to best practices: I have used these myself. I'm wearing them right now to watch your video. Good job on the video. Not so much on the information. Please don't encourage such damaging practices like wearing these for several hours straight. I had another headset, different brand, but similar style, and quality. I won't name them and won't shame them. They worked well. But I was taking a course in audio engineering for music, and I spent a little too long in the lab. I didn't remove them enough, and didn't wipe them down. I ended up with an ear infection. The pain was constant and debilitating, just short of unbearable. I had to toss the headset. I didn't want to spread the infection. That was what was recommended by the doctor. Here's some best practices to avoid painful consequences. 1. Keep your sets to 1 song, and don't leave the headset on for more than an hour. ----This one is pretty easy. Playing through one song, then taking them off is a great way to maintain your comfort and your hearing. 2. Wipe down your ears and your pads with a sanitizing wipe. -----Again, this one is easy. I keep dry\damp wipes all over the mixing room, and I wipe down everything after I turn it all off. This prevents oils from skin from building up along with other refuse. Wiping down my headset and my ears keeps the sweat from causing ear infections (it can actually pull dust and dirt into the ear canal, or other refuse that fell on the pads). This also helps let you know when you are building up wax. 3. Listen at a low or medium volume -----If you listen too loud for a long period, you will build up ear wax, which is a defense mechanism your body uses for blocking damage, and for sealing over damaged areas. Ear wax indicates you either have caused irritation or damage, you are about to cause it, or that you have some refuse or other material possibly causing havoc on your ear canal. Best to wipe it all down, clear the wax and lower the volume. 4. If you feel your ears heating up after only a short time, check your sample rate first, then check how you are plugged in, then try to place your hand on the pad and playback again to determine where the heat is coming from. ------If you are incorrectly connected, you can get voltage problems, so check with your connector on your playback device to make sure it supports your OHM count. IF the volume is too high coming off the playback, but too low in the headset, you may have a ground problem somewhere, so check each device, and if in the headset, get it repaired, it can be dangerous. If you place your hand on the pad and play some sound back, feeling the pad heat up, you should immediately contact the manufacturer and return the headset for repairs or replacement. It may also mean that you got a "Bootleg headset" which is just a headset designed to look like the name brand, but built by somebody in their garage with parts that don't really work. This happens a lot with ebay, and has occurred several times from amazon, thanks to their inability to control overseas "stores" on their sites. 5. DO NOT BUY YOUR PRO GEAR ON AMAZON OR EBAY ------Again, you may get bootlegs, even if the site shows the shipping from a local warehouse, you have no way of knowing where that warehouse is stocked from. Buy from the music equipment stores. They check a lot of their merchandise as it hits their stockroom, and when there is a problem, they will usually make it right with you.

You are quite right that I am not an audio engineer or mixer, nor do I consider myself an audiophile. I'm a tech enthusiast who owns and enjoys a few Sennheiser headphones. My intro to this video perhaps overstates my experience in that regard, and in retrospect I would probably reword it. But I think it's important to realize that this doesn't make someone completely unqualified to talk about any particular product. There is value in pretty much every perspective on a particular product as long as those viewing understand the limitations of it. Along similar lines, not every review needs to cover every conceivable characteristic of a particular product. My goal is not to provide a one-stop shop for all the information you'll need about a particular product. Doing that is entirely impossible, and if I were to try, I would never publish anything because it would never live up to that standard. My expectation is that everyone watching any of my reviews should consult several other reviews on the matter to get a more complete and detailed picture of what they can expect from the product. In fact, I often have a few reviews from other people linked in the descriptions of my videos. Regarding head buildup, I bring that up because open-backed headphones like my HD 598 do not cause it. Additionally, the closed-back HD 598 Cs do not build up heat as strongly as the HD 280's because they use a more breathable ear pad material. The same could be said of the DT 770's that I mentioned. This pretty much proves that the cause of head buildup has nothing to do with friction from sound waves (is that even a thing?) and everything to do with the headphones trapping in your own body heat, preventing it from dissipating into the environment. If it were the sound waves causing the heat, we'd expect similar characteristics from open-backed headphones, speakers, or live instruments. I don't understand what you mean by "your ears quickly begin to lose their effectiveness." Obviously listening for long periods at sufficiently loud levels can cause hearing damage. But I've never heard anything indicating that listening to headphones for a long time universally has such an impact. Do you have any sources that can clarify and prove this point? Along similar lines, what are you trying to get at with your discussion of earlier models? (It's also quite hard to follow or validate without some mention of some older model names.) And why are you bothering with frequency response beyond 20 kHz? First of all, Sennheiser only quotes these as responding up to 25 kHz. Second, when would a consumer ever encounter frequencies that high? Can consumer audio devices even generate such high frequencies? I've never heard of over ear headphones causing ear infections. Doing a little searching online all I can find is that in-ear headphones and earplugs are known to facilitate infections in some situations. Do you have any citations for that claim? Point 2 is good advice for in-ear headphones and probably also for any headphones you frequently share with others. But unless you can actually prove that over-ear headphones cause ear infections, it seems entirely unnecessary for headphones that only you use. Regarding point 3, obviously you shouldn't be cranking up the volume on headphones, especially not for long periods. But I doubt the rest of your comment. The only reason I can find online for ear wax production is to trap foreign particles before they embed themselves deeper in the ear and cause an infection. Ear wax is a normal part of a healthy ear. Ear wax production, even in excess, is NOT sufficient proof that something is wrong. Point 5 seems excessively skeptical. On Amazon it's quite easy to get a legitimate product as long as you're aware of the chance of counterfeit products, buy from a legitimate seller, and make sure they allow returns. And even on eBay there are plenty of legitimate products, even new ones, although you will need to be even more careful to avoid problems.

@@StephensThoughts Again, very nice video. I just saw some things that might be dangerous to tell other people to do. Keeping a headset on for several hours can damage hearing. For a musician or a tech enthusiast, a lawsuit could be a very messy thing. I was elated that somebody put up such a video. It was nice. But I wanted to make sure you understand that there are practices that go with the tech and there are reasons behind it. I learned it the hard way. I'd really be hurt to see someone with the guts to share stuff like this get pegged in some lawsuit because somebody else happened to be a bit unknowing. You did good, but it was a bit frightening to hear "--after a few hours", I mean I almost soiled myself. The rest, I thought you'd like to have some basis for the why of some of the "cons" you were suggesting, so you could apply it to something else later. I just read it again, and it sounded preachy to me, my apologies at that, not intended. I do a lot of consultation. When people ask about reviews they find online etc, I try to have an answer as to why some things work the way they do, and if I cannot find one, I ask for the time to check it myself. Taking note of the principles involved with any item is always a good place to start, but sometimes, there are aesthetic decisions made by manufacturers that people don't fully understand if they've never used it. So your update on the outer band-frame was an exceptional find. There was just so much more to these that only got glossed over. I get also that this was a long time back. didn't notice. Another apology, I came upon it while looking for some directions on how to take these apart without breaking the plastic. Why plastic... ...easy enough to throw in here. Metal in the frame is more expensive, and plastic is easy to replace. Metal requires milling equipment, plastic requires a mold. Plastic is also lighter, so it stays comfortable longer, a plus and a minus there. Plastic is also easier to modify to personal specs, which is what this model of headset was truly designed towards. It was almost expected that people would remove the cord and replace it with their own variant of the 4pole xlr, while other models used a 3.5mm quick release, or the later models a long flat connector with a force-release, to prevent damage when moving around or away from the interface\board. These 280 pro sets were essentially the electronics of the older sets with a capability to make your own wire connector, sometimes requiring a dremel, but usually not. Maybe you'll use some of that info on your own later. It was just fun info. Again, good video work, maybe some work on your script or your review information would make it better, but it's still good as is. Just be very careful about how you review. A tech I've worked with just got done with a lawsuit over an instructional he made that gave an impression about a product that was a bad practice, and he lost a lot when the item had a malfunction due to such use. It also caused some hazardous danger, which only made the lawsuit against him stronger. He also had to recertify in the technology before he could get licensed again. It was a mess. It wouldn't be good to see somebody repeat the mistake. I hope I haven't offended.
@StephensThoughts

To be quite honest, I think your concern over long listening sessions is vastly overblown. Especially considering that much larger online publications like RTings and PCMag both mention long listening sessions in their reviews of this exact headphone. RTings goes as far as to say, "they're rather tight on the head and make your ears very warm after a couple of hours of listening." And as far as I'm concerned, since you haven't cited any additional sources, the claim that listening to over-ear headphones for over an hour is inherently dangerous is still just hearsay. Your mention of modifying these reminds me that I did actually look into modifying these to give them a detachable cable, but haven't actually done that, at least not yet. The point about plastic being lighter is especially relevant now that the AirPods Max have hit the market. Pretty much every review mentions that the metal-heavy construction is particularly heavy on the head. So it's a good thing that the 280's have a solid plastic construction that doesn't seem to need more metal.

@@StephensThoughts Sources... ...How about medical journals that link hearing loss, internal ear damage and even severe tinitus with prolonged exposure to high amplitudes in all environments or moderate to low amplitudes in especially enclosed environments? RTing wasn't written by anybody with an MD, or somebody actually in an occupation where that kind of use is necessary was it? No. They are WRITERS. Not just WRITERS but TABLOID writers. They are not accustomed to responsible use of anything, especially the written word. In every lab or studio I have been in, in any stage environment I've worked on, the one rule among anyone using a headset is: No longer than 15 on. If they are continually on your head for longer than 15minutes and there is sound coming out for most of that time, you will more than likely experience at least a temporary amplitude loss for an extended period when you take them off. The only application of these where that might be different is in aviation where the micboom version is used. Even in towers, you get some time every hour to take off your headset, and your amplitudes are nil in between calls, so the overall effect is generally a 15-30 on and then quiet or off. There is also a speaker on your main console in most towers, so if you take off your headset for a second, you don't miss a call in. If RTing actually did test these by listening for several hours, the person actually performing the test may have done temporary or even permanent damage to their hearing. I grew up with hearing problems, ear infections and hearing impairment. After a long run, surgery cleared up about half the problem. One ear is great, the other is legally impaired. The great ear is a retread. It was deaf before surgery, and I'm still trying to train it after more than 10 years. When I began listening to music again, I didn't notice a lot of differences at first, but I realized that things outside the headset were suddenly softer again. Consulting a doctor cleared up why. Temporary loss can last up to 48 hours with a normal ear, but in my case was closer to a week due to the musculature and internal nerve reactions being unaccustomed to normal function. The only way I have found to aid in returning normal function is PinkNoise through speakers at a constantly increasing\decreasing amplitude topping at moderate, and bottomed at zero. This helps to relax the musculature in the ear, and after about a half hour, you're closer to normal again. If I work any longer projects, I cut it into several pieces, and work in increments of 30minutes max, with breaks of 10-15 minutes using pinknoise as a backing to whatever else is around. My sources? How about the younger of the two Doctors House of the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, or the articles he gave me detailing studies done out of Johns Hopkins? Do those do anything for you? The writer's source... ...themselves... ...well they're an ass.

I think you're either unsure of your own position on this or misreading my comments. I already affirmed that listening at high volume for long periods of time can cause damage. However, it seems like you have claimed that listening at any volume for a long time causes damage. I have been unable to find any sources that support such a claim. As far as I can tell, sounds under 70 dBA are not considered dangerous, even for long periods of time. If you do have any studies showing headphones are universally dangerous, it would be much more convincing if you specify which studies you're thinking of, and extra convincing if you provide a link to them. My point in mentioning RTINGS and PCMag is to observe that they are much larger publications than me and have had their review up much longer than I have. The PCMag review has been up for over 8 years now. So if there was any basis to your concern over a lawsuit for that kind of language, one would reasonably expect that they would have already been hit by one and forced to alter their coverage. I also seriously doubt your credibility if you perceive RTINGS as a tabloid site. If that's all they are, then they're wasting a ton of money and effort creating legit-looking heatmaps, frequency response curves, and other charts for each headphone they review. I am a bit concerned that you've worked at places that can only allow you to use headphones for 15 minutes at a time. How loud are you running those headphones to require such restrictions? In order to do damage to your hearing in 15 minutes, the sound would need to be around 100 dBA. Do you really need to run your headphones that loud? It sounds like your problems with long listening sessions might be linked to your past problems of ear infections and hearing impairment. Be careful when assuming that your experience applies to everyone else as well.

If you mean that your ears heat up pretty fast, that's just a result of their design and the ear cushion material. Keeping sound out also traps body heat in. More breathable headphones, especially open-backed designs, will be better with this. If the headphones themselves are producing significant heat, you should probably return them as that sounds like an electrical problem.
