The bootsteps. I love the echoing bootsteps. They’re tense as fuck, they make me uncomfortable, but they’re exactly what I imagine 18th century Europe to sound like

I love this scene because there's no muse or artist position that separates them. I think that the way they kiss and how their heads look like one symbolizes how they have finally become one in the observers (us) perspective bc they both know their love is reciprocated, yet they aren't our muses, because we can't actually see them.

can someone explain to me the "if you look at me, who do I look at?" please. Not english or french are my first language.
@skullsaintdead
@skullsaintdead Год назад
I love this so much. As young women, we are so often 'looked at' by men and our non-verbal cues are ignored. They seem to think they're the ones in control, watching and silently judging us, sexualising or objectifying our bodies. But, just as they're getting comfortable, you shoot a look back, a straight stare of defiance that catches them off-guard. Then you lock eyes and we both smile wryly. He thinks we're smiling because we're interested; I mean, he just got a 'sexy' look from a pretty girl! But really, we're smiling because we know what he's thinking and we know that we're worth more than a man's appreciation. But with women, when you look at women, as a woman yourself, there's no fear, no sexualising, no power games. We're equals. It's liberating.
@princessmiacara

So true , after watching this movie, i really craved love from a woman just to feel that liberation

Within your analysis seems to be a dark judgement and simplification of men. Especially closing with "We're equals" which seems to be only attainable with other women. I hope you meet some men who break the mold for you.

@@BigAndTall1020 If all you took from my comment was an attack on yourself and other men, then this is the very problem I highlighted. Thank your for illustrating it again.

@@skullsaintdead Can you please explain further how my comment exemplifies the point you made in your initial post? I guess I am naive or just missing the point. I am genuinely curious about your perspective. I loved this film and was surprised to read your analysis.
@skullsaintdead
@skullsaintdead Год назад
@@BigAndTall1020 Why would you assume my perspective should shift - and why should it shift because of a man? Why wouldn't your perspective shift - and shift because of a woman? Perhaps it is because we live in a male dominated society, where even a comment simply stating the nature & impact of the male gaze is met with outright dismissal by a man. I'd expected a comment like yours (e.g. "this criticism of the male gaze is an attack on me - a man!" - well, not if you're not part of the problem, not if you're respectful - it shouldn't of ever offended you; it should of been met with understanding and empathy). Women share a bond, it's far less likely that we'll be hurt by a woman and near on zero likelihood we'd be raped by her. I suppose our intimacy, our whispers and glances, might make a man suspicious or jealous. That's his problem, not ours - indeed, he cannot attain this level of closeness because he can hurt us. That will differ from person to person, but for me and my closest friends, we'd be in agreement - you cannot let a man get that close, women can come as close as you want. As an attempted rape survivor, I'm not going to advocate for blindly assuming the good in men, when I (and so many women) have seen how easy it is for men to ignore non-verbal cues, body language & even flatly refusing to accept 'No!'. They do what they want and we (1/6 women are SA survivors, all women are survivors of sexism and harassment) have to live with the consequences. He will get away with it too - only 0.5% of rapes ever end with jail time. Wake up.
