Combining my stress relievers of riding a motorbike, photography and movie-making. Keeps me properly grounded from the day job. Not forgetting my GS sidekick Dave, butt of most of my jokes...!
Based in the Midlands but don't hold that against me.
I see your point, they are popping up everywhere. In fairness to them though I believe it’s due to their innovation which is getting them the attention they deserve. They didn’t push anything on me either, I asked to review it as I was intrigued 😅
Hi Andy, This looks ok, I know it’s not cheap but having only one item to think about is not a bad thing. Pleased to see you know all about it for when I get mine!! 😂 good detailed review. Dave. Ps. Would it stand up to my off road riding?
A unit for car drivers that ride bikes cos they think its cool and never go far!! Never sent a text or found the need to send a text! At the end of the day lets see how long these things last in the real world!!
@@flavio_spqr I have the W702 model and have read in many foruns that card must be 32GB maximum. I've used a 2GB MicroSd. It must be formated in FAT32.
Super video Andy. I particularly like the MRA you recommended. Why would anyone prefer a Garmin? (i) The (Garmin and similar ) GPS radios are, in my experience, more sensitive. Less likely to let you down when in a remote location. (i) Bigger screen size . Arguably brighter and faster too. (iii) Absolutely no need to have a phone with you (iv) A simpler lesss time-consuming solution for those who want to “crack -on “ and ride ! 😂😂
Ok, so I was trying the update, with the card that came with the unit, and it killed it. After booting, inserted the card, asked if I wanted to update, pressed Yes, and it just went dead. Is this normal?
I have the BMW Chigee coming soon. I do hope they eventually add the cameras to the BMW one as that is a great option (especially the blind-spot notification).
@@Freddels1 unlikely as you would not then be able to detach the Chigee from the mount as you can’t carry the video signals over the rear connectors, would need separate wiring 🥹
Does CarPlay populate or mirror all your iPhone apps on the Chigee or are you limited to a certain number or just those apps that are compatible with the device? If so, how does that work? I’m thinking about the Chigee so that I can put my phone in my tank bag.
Just apps that are CarPlay compatible, the app designer has to program for it. You won’t be able to watch YouTuve videos on the device (for example) as that would be dangerous whilst driving.
Andy, can you explain how you download music onto an iPhone, so it doesn’t use data. I’m pulling my hair out when using CarPlay on my AT1100, because when I’m in an area with little or no internet, music is a pain. Cheers.
I use Apple Music. Once I’ve created a playlist. There is three dots next to the playlist. Select download. Now the playlist is downloaded to your phone and wont use data for additional plays
The beauty of Scenic is being able to plan routes in Google Maps and the fact you don’t need active data to use it as maps are downloaded to your device.
Same with MRA which can download the routes, the background maps and also now has an OFFLINE route planner should you get stuck in an area without data.
@@user-fv1576 never had a problem so that suggests I never have more than 10 WP. I do most planning in Scenic as it's so user friendly but some people will always prefer Google Maps.
Enjoyed that Andy! The other thing I do for weather on route is to ask Siri what the weather is ahead of me say in 1hr time. Always spot on.👌 I love all this new tech!🤗
Have been looking at the Chigee BMW version for use on my GS so I can use the multi controller as I’ve got used to using it to zoom out and in easily while riding the route so would like to have this functionality. Ditched Nav 6 and Connecred Ride app and using MRA for navigation and have been using for route creation for years now so maybe time to migrate to it on CarPlay when the Chigee has been well tested👍 Keep up the good work and take it easy on Dave, he’s an old man😂😂😂
Thanks for the review. How is the pairing setup in order to be able to talk to Siri, listen to music etc etc Phone to Chigee, Phone to TFT and headset to TFT? Does the music get stuck somewhere in the TFT and are you able to hear Siri and is she able to hear you? Hope you see where I’m getting at. Thanks mate!
There is only one reliable way to get pretty much any CarPlay device working with the BMW. Delete all TFT connections to your phone and get the bike to forget them. Then pair the helmet intercom to the phone and the phone to the CarPlay device. You will then have a reliable connection and all the sound ends up in the right place and Siri works. Doing it differently is a bit 'hit and miss' and you may well end up with the sound being sent to the TFT so you won't then hear it and Siri won't work.
@@andybcoleI was worried about that and it absolutely reverberates with my own user experience. My problem is that I like the connected app for the route data. It’s nice to sip a beer in the evening and look at the route and the data again. I presume I will sacrifice Siri for this as I have in the past. Now that you can have CarPlay and wizard wheel control Siri gets less important for me. Would be great though if some manufacturer would find a reliable workaround to integrate ALL of it. Thanks again!
@@alexanderschmidt7710 You won't just sacrifice Siri, you will probably struggle to get any audio in the headset from the audio device as the CarPlay will try and send it to the TFT where it will get lost. There are other ways to check the days route, for example using the tracklog function on MyRouteApp or equivalent or even the Google app will track your location if you allow it to.
@@andybcoleI hope not 😬 I heard from another user that the following pattern is stable: Phone to TFT, Phone to Chigee, Headset to TFT. That would make sense as this is my current setup for using BMW’s cradle for navigation. But I guess I will have to find out if it changes once CarPlay is in the mix. If all else fails then yes, I will not connect to the TFT and get the route data another way. Tech is cumbersome somewhat 😂
Yes it has its own GPS but it also uses the phone GPS when using CarPlay. You don’t need a phone mobile signal for a phone to get GPS, it’s a different system (gets the signal from satellites not mobile phone masts)
Does siri activate every time you press the indicator button if either on nav or tft? How would that work if you had ezcan lights fitted which also works off that button? Zooming in and out of maps is by pressing the indicator button on the relevant icon rather than scrolling in and out? I think the bmw ride nav still might be a better nav? Plus i dont use appleplay so dont know, phone battery drains a lot with it?
@@lambo2817 One for me to test - will let you know. I don’t think it does call up Siri when the indicators are running or I would have noticed. Phone battery seemed fine but I run the phone plugged in when on the bike. I don’t have an EZCan so can’t answer that question sorry.
Would have liked to have had this, but cancelled the Kickstart as the voice control is not working with Android auto as yet, according to Chigee.. Hopefully, they will get it working soon.
How was the battery life when using the iPhone via Car Play with the chigee? My son used to use his iPhone running My-Route navigator and even on charge after about 6 hours of use the battery would be flat.
I had my iPhone on charge in the tank bag whilst running it and after a whole day when I got off the bike the phone was 100%. I'm on the beta program for MyRouteApp and then do a lot of updates, battery usage with CarPlay has obviously got a lot better. The USB socket I was using was only 1A as well.
Hi, as i can see on your video, your phone is connected to aio and tft as well. Am i wrong? I can see aio working and i can see the phone sign on tft.... is it possible? Chigee says it is not possible. What is the true? I use sena. I can control audio volume with w.wheel. Will i lose this feature? I f i use aio, do i need to skip the tft from phone data music nav etc. audio line? Can tft get any audio from aio? Is it possible to connect phone to aio and tft at the same time? Or, is it possible to connect aio to tft? or i have to forget the tft and use only the aio to control the phone. Even if with the w.wheel... Chigee says bmw connected app is off if using aio. True? w.wheel is useful to control aio, or easier to use my finger and w.wheel is just a fancy plus but not really used? If easier, ( i guess), ordinary aio play is cheaper and do everything. Where am i wrong? Reading can bus is nice but necessary? I can see all on my tft. What i think is.... Aio is nice and usefull. For carplay. Easier to control aio in gloves than the phone and that's all. Ok. But. lose bmw connected app. Lose connection between phone and tft. Lose connection between headsets and tft. Lose one click music control and intercom volume control via tft witch are very easy methodes. I just think, but not sure. I am highly interested in your opinion. Thank you.
Hi, my phone is definitely not connected to the TFT, only to the Cardo Packtalk and ChiGee as sound will not work properly if you are connected with the phone to the TFT. For Sena you should connect Sena to the phone, phone to the Chigee and no other connections. You will not be able to control volume with wonder wheel as the Chigee does not control the volume, the phone and Sena do. It is possible to connect phone to TFT and AIO at the same time but the TFT will take audio control which means you will not hear anything in your Sena. AIO Play (not BMW) is cheaper because it does not fit straight into the GPS mount, does not have direct wonder wheel control and does not have information coming from the bike.
I’m going to check this the next time I’m out actually, I don’t remember being bothered by Siri so I have a feeling the indicator cancel acts as just that whilst the indicator is running - TBC!
@@andybcole Maybe it has something to do with how long you press the turn signal cancel button. Is it a longer press to access Siri? When I cancel my turn signals (on my 1250GS), I dont press the button very long.
@@chrispitman1169 I have an unlimited data plan so not something I’ve monitored. If you’re music is already in your phone that won’t use anything (make sure your bike playlist is downloaded in Apple Music). Nav will use some but it’s not much. You can also download the route in advance on MyRouteApp which I recommend in case you lose signal!
@@andrewscott8950 I would recommend Waze - uses about a third of what Google Maps does (www.statista.com/statistics/1186009/data-use-leading-us-navigation-apps/#:~:text=As%20of%20October%202020%2C%20the,0.23%20MB%20per%2020%20minutes.) although they may have improved their data efficiency since this test. This shows Waze uses 0.7MB per hour or about 1,500 hours of navigation per 1gb

Would be interested to see how your Wales trip worked out using this and MyRouteApp and are you using MRA web or Navigation Next? I’m currently going off the BMW Connected app and cradle having previously junked the Nav6 and this finally looks like a decent offering. PS I might have missed the Wales trip if you have already posted it🤪👍
@@dungbeetle. very nicely with a Cardo packtalk black which I have. To be honest it doesn’t touch it as the connection is between packtalk and iPhone, CHIGEE is just acting as the screen
What does happen when you crank up the motorcycle's engine? Does the Chigee reset and briefly cut connexion with the phone? I had a Carplay device on my '23 GS Adventure which I sold, because it would always briefly reset while cranking up my engine, which caused some navigation apps that I use to lose track.
@@romain487 no issue for me, just done 220 miles using myrouteapp with 15 waypoints, one momentary loss of connection lasted about five seconds, then reconnected automatically but I think was because I drove right past an electricity substation!
The most stable way to use it is to connect the headset to the phone, and totally remove the connection from the phone to the bike. If you leave any kind of connection to the bike, the phone (not the Chigee's fault) often tries to run its audio through the bike which means you can't hear any audio in the headset. This does mean you don't get the ConnectedRide App info such as route mapping but you gain all the features of CarPlay without the hassle of not having audio, and Siri then works just fine from both the ChiGee and the headset. Hope that helps!
Agree with your sentiments entirely Andy and Dave I thought it also had a look of the Suzuki 800 v Strom too, perhaps I’ll change my view when I see it in the flesh more but I like my bike more 😊
Hi bit of a basic question but does this require a phone or sim for connection or standalone? I ask as I use a sim less mobile for mapping to overcome BMW dreadful mapping. Cheers
CarPlay and Android Auto require either an iPhone or Android device connected to it to function. It is designed to act as an interface not standalone. Suggest googling what CarPlay is to get a full understanding.
Did you only watch the first two minutes - I took it out on the road and am taking it on a trip to Wales tomorrow? Anything specific you’d like to see of it in use?
