This guy is an absolute genius. I have never enjoyed listening to this concerto that much. Such a joy. No one is able to make this music that special. It is a disaster and huge shame that he didn't pass to the finals, but I am sure that he will cut his path. This is a performance you will never forget, regardless of whether you like it or not.
This is clearly a soprano, on what grounds so many light and sparkly high female voice are classified as mezzos nowadays is beyond me. Yes, she can reach some lower notes, but she sings them as a light soprano, there is no chest voice, no darkness, no volume. Nice, but not a mezzo.
After listening to his first round and I saw that he's playing Bartok in the second, I could already tell that it'd suit his style perfectly. This reminds me of Gitlis and Kopachinskaya, without some of their eccentricities. It's such a pity that he practically threw away his spot to the third round with a crazy Mozart performance.
I personally believe the Handel variations to be one of the most perfect piano compositions ever written. It is extremely tuneful, most variations are very melodically memorable and expressive, making it easy to grasp the beauty thereof after only a few listening experiences. The Handel Variations has easily become my favorite composition for piano forte, Brahms is absolutely amazing. I've had the pleasure of listening to many versions of this work, among my favorites are the Richter and Schiff versions.
