This guy is an absolute genius. I have never enjoyed listening to this concerto that much. Such a joy. No one is able to make this music that special. It is a disaster and huge shame that he didn't pass to the finals, but I am sure that he will cut his path. This is a performance you will never forget, regardless of whether you like it or not.

Someone posted under Smirnov’s first-round appearence: „Too interesting for a competition. Sad for art.“ Prophetic words - in view of the fact that his performances in the semi-final were far beyond what the jury would have been able to grasp based on the scoring system they used. This violinist will certainly cut his own path, regardless of the fact that he was not admitted to the final.

Hear hear! So true. I was there, it was amazing. His Bartok was unbelievably good, so was his 4th Paganini caprice (the most difficult one)! He has his own route which will hopefully be grand!
28 дней назад
@@edmondfokkervancrayestein Yes, and on top of that he played everything on gut strings, which most people probably didn't even notice. You have to try playing Paganini #4 and Bartok Solo Sonata on gut strings to realise that it is practically impossible.
@edmondfokkervancrayestein
@edmondfokkervancrayestein 28 дней назад
Well, i asked him about the strings. This time he didnt play gut-strings. But yes, he dies that a lot. On his beautiful strad! Still his variations in Paganini 4 were unforgettable and so brilliant, Paganini would have loved it!
28 дней назад
@@edmondfokkervancrayestein Well, I’m not sure. Judging by the tailpiece end of the strings (you can see it pretty well in the video), it looks like he uses Pirastro Passione (Solo) gut strings.

Maybe for the Mozart he did. I spoke to him after round 1 and there he didn’t he said, I asked specifically because i know he does play gut strings a lot. Although same tailpiece I thought. Never mind, he is a genius violinist and we r obviously both enjoying him.

What an outstanding artistic personality, what a lucky discovery! At least, it wouldn't be the first time that of all people a contestant, who didn't make the cut, cut their own path. Doubtlessly, Smirnov’s unheard-of interpretations won’t go unheard.

his artistry is far beyond all others, including the jury. Kevin Zhu is fantastic overall, but his musicality is Juilliard level, which is very much horizontal and safe. Mr Smirnov plays music. The fact he can play so in tune with minimal vibrato and he can shape phrases all with the bow, wow
Месяц назад
Essentially, I agree. In his own inimitable way, he is far beyond all others. However, I wouldn't generalise too much and in particular, I wouldn't condemn the jury out of hand. Several of its members are outstanding artistic personalities: Midori, Isabelle van Keulen, to name but a few.
@---px3fr
@---px3fr Месяц назад
I respect your opinion, but I'd like to express mine. At Kevin Zhu's age, Dmitry Smirnov also performed in a more traditional style than now. It requires time for young musicians to develop their unique approach to playing. It's important to recognize that all the violinists in this competition are mutually influencing one another, fostering growth. Moreover, Zhu's rendition of Mozart was truly outstanding.

@@---px3fr No question about it. I agree with your comment on all points.

Look, i was in the hall the last weeks and i loved Smirnov, but i love Kevin as well, Elli Choi was great, Joshua Brown is really good. They are all in different wats fantastic. Do not forget the different age-levels… some ideas develop later. Smirnov did great in the semi-finals and now of course he is out. He is too free a spirit to be praised more than this by the most traditional and prestigious violin competition in the world. Which is fine. Lets enjoy them all!

I am not fan of the little slides/glides, that's neither baroque nor classical, neither Mozart nor Vivaldi.... he sometimes sounds like a fiddler rather than a classical violinist, which is fine for fiddle music, but not for Mozart

Its rather a historically informed performance than what you call original. His use of a baroque bow underlines that. I think its a very refreshing interpretation, you might dislike it. In the end it all comes down to taste.

Not neat in intonation and not high quality in sound. Intonation and sound in Mozart should be clear and bright like a ray of the Sun! And the fact that he stood and smiled was for the theater, and not for such a level of competition.

@@BaroqueHarmonie You can tell the same to the judges, because our opinions coincide))) Of course, the semi-final at such a competition is a definite achievement and life goes on. It’s just that the level of the participants is very high, and Mozart’s performance was not the best.

Don’t really get it why one chooses to play like this in front of judges.. They’re basically professors which means whether it is a good interpretation or not, it’s very likely to be considered disgraceful. Aand for me it doesn’t even sound persuasive. This is just sacrificing one’s reputation for nothing.
