In Auckland drivers are crazy. If you leave a bigger gap they tailgate close and then do dangerous overtakes to get in front of you. They get no advantage whatsoever but there's a whole "fight" driving attitude at the moment which is bonkers.
@hydrogen.jukebox
@hydrogen.jukebox 20 дней назад
I remember Kevin from MCRider explained that if you are being tailgated, leaving *more* space in front of you is a good idea since their stopping distance is much smaller than is probably necessary, and you'll need some extra room if something happens. I don't usually have issues with tailgating since I will typically ride a tiny bit faster than traffic and filter/split as I feel comfortable. Some people don't like it, but it keeps me moving and out of blind spots or sandwiched between cars. But there are still people you can't help, which can get dangerous. As far as the overtaking goes, I will typically ride in a lane position that protects my lane from someone cutting over early; ie. if I'm in the left lane of two lanes going the same way, I will be in a right lane position. This also gives me the best view up the road and the best chance of being seen in someone's side mirror (in a wider lane position, you're more likely to be in a blind spot. Skyoom has a good video demonstrating this, addressing what he calls "riding scared")

i just turned 17, and have never ridden a motorcycle before. i started watching videos like this one to learn what i would need to do to start riding. my question is, why are you riding on the side of the lane? is that not more dangerous, as there’s less of a gap should you or another driver move into your lane (at least on the side that you’re leaning towards)?
@TankoJoe
@TankoJoe Месяц назад
I can say that about halfway through the video, it's a good position to increase your visibility to other drivers, and any driver that may be pulling out into traffic. When riding you basically have to assume that nobody sees you, so you have to do things to be seen. Also, there's more traction available in the wheel tracks on a dry road so you're going to want to hang out in whatever one makes you more visible or lets you approach a turn smoothly.
@RoamMoto
@RoamMoto Месяц назад
@@EmptyCheetosBag Trust me it feels wrong sometimes riding in that lane position but in this instance I am trying my best to make sure the driver knows I’m there. I may not always be in the correct lane position 100% of the time but I always try to use my best judgement

The reason I’ve always hesitated to carry is not that I fear I will have a weapon and never need it, it’s more that I will use it when I don’t need it. My judgement is not perfect. I still however find myself WANTING to carry, any tips on getting over this?
@RoamMoto
@RoamMoto Месяц назад
Carrying a firearm in general requires great mental fortitude and an understanding of the implications that could result from the decision to carry or use a firearm. If you feel you are not yet ready to take that responsibility, you simply shouldn't carry until you are able to.
@jimmorrison306
@jimmorrison306 Месяц назад
I didn’t care for the kydex holster with no active retention other than the molding of the plastic. Some motorcycle clothing can fit tight, and my jacket partially drew the pistol one time. The other issue is that the nice protective motorcycle gloves I have are almost impossible to shoot in. Off body carry is an option, but you then have to worry about walking away from a properly secured firearm. You can and should carry, but it is a tougher proposition than when dressed normally and driving a car. It is very personalized, and not every guy on the internet who says his way works is right.

@dougstenger4085
@dougstenger4085 3 месяца назад
@@JoeyFutano If you had taken a motorcycle training course, you would know that on most American roads, the area of the road where car and truck tires run is slightly lower because of wear, which can make the transition from side to side treacherous and the black area between is caused from oil dropping from other vehicles, sometimes making it slick, especially in the rain. The position you should ride in, is the left part of the lane when alone so other vehicles can see you better and staggered with multiple riders. You're just a statistic, waiting to happen.
