Welcome to the Cichlid Charmer! African and American Cichlids are my favorite fish in the freshwater aquarium hobby. They are so beautiful and they have such great personalities! Keeping cichlids alive, healthy and happy can sometimes be a real challenge, and it is my goal to share with you the knowledge I have gained over time. I also like having some fun with the videos sometimes, with different characters and voices. I aim to keep the aquarium hobby fun for everyone! I also make videos on general aquarium topics, such as aquarium maintenance, aquarium equipment, and general aquarium tips and tricks. Thank you for stopping by! Good luck with the fry! I started with 5 young adults and separated two and now have a trio of one male and two females in a 75 gallon continuously spawning, yikes! Didn't have the ability to set up another tank for the babies but after one failed spawn, the rest have been successful with zero effort from me, but they're also the biggest fish in their tank so different experience I'm sure XD! Thanks for sharing!
@@CichlidCharmer Also I had eba that held there own with convicts and Gold saums, the do hold the own with more aggressive breeding pair and cichlids in general.
Oh man you're a grandpa how fun and one of EBA's their so beautiful, I think you did a great job with the set up and the powdered foods also like other's said here BBS you can get frozen ones. I like to grow my own which really isn't hard to do just another chore to deal with, I also grow vinegar eels (icky) the bigger babies seem to love them. Of course, don't take my advice look at how many babies I have lost but again I'm trying to raise German Blue Rams the little turds are so delicate. Great Job Grandpa and thanks for showing us these little cuties (really, I'm jealous), oh my 2 cents worth.... more fry are on the way with the males still with mama haha, yeah horny is the right word!
You have much more experience with babies than I do, and those rams are hard to keep alive! Hopefully these will be easy. I’m sure there will be tons more babies on the way unless I split the males from mama. Thanks Polly!
Is nice to know the EBA don’t eat their fry’s ❤. Well, they probably going to breed again; a nice 75g with rocks and caves! And just put the EBAs and let them breeeeed/then donate them to the local fish store. You asked 🤷🏽♂️ lol. Instead of a yellow lab tank imagine a EBA tank.
Trade you some my red for some for your blue? Lol I love cichlids for this trait if you got 2 you love chances are you gonna get A LOT MORE. My wife hates how many fish I have now but here I thought she was worried about how much they cost… lol well, good job trying 😂, wrigglers are a sight the first time you see them but my Jewels are all about .5”-1.0”. Great video and I hope you keep a few of your fry so we can watch them grow! Stay happy and healthy my friend 😊❤ the only truck I can recommend is the same for what I did and what others do with Angelfish, give them their own tank
That’s definitely a good option. And then he’ll color up more. Not sure if I want to be having fry all the time, though, so I am also considering moving both males to San Quentin. Thank you!
I have looking for months for EBA. 😮. You might just get the breeding bug during this adventure. If you don’t want anymore clutches you could just move the female, best of luck!!!
I did the same. Syphoned all the kids out. I had an established heavily planted tank with shrimp and snails so the biofilm helped feed. They stayed in there a couple of months. Fry starter food and later baby brine and crushed flake. My first 3 fry rescues ended in mass deaths. Still dont know what I did wrong, bare bottom, kept clean 🤷♀️ The female and male pair excellent parents, both feisty and constant care. This last lot of eggs with a new dad, didnt make it to hatching...he was hopeless!!! Ive decided to leave the next batch in and let nature decide. And I dont have enough tanks!
It’s an adventure! I don’t have another tank for more if they get at it again, so they’ll probably be staying where they are too. Thanks for telling us your experience!
It is a good thing that u have that fry food around , is amazing how they start breeding , be aware that they will breed again because they did it once and the conditions are good for that , maybe you can set up a tank just of electric blue ,greetings
Building my forever tank so to speak. Been out of it for about 15 years now. From a 135 to a 180 (not). Since they don’t make them any longer it’s a 210 or 240. Are there any online companies worth using $$ wise or just buy local? Local can deliver and set up for a fair price.
Good question! I don’t have anything near where I live, so not sure about your LFS, but check fish tanks direct for acrylic and custom aquariums for glass. Neither are cheap, but they’re made well and you can get any size you would like. Any dimensions.
@@CichlidCharmer thank you. In Phoenix and there is pretty much one LFS and that’s the Ocean Floor. Looking around 3k for a 125 delivered with only glass tank, stand and hood. Average wood. 210 Aqueon gonna be 5k delivered with good stand/hood and still need to outfit with dual Fluval 6 and everything.
Dave did you debate purchasing full grown fish versus juveniles? I agree with your choice but wonder how patient I could be! Looking forward to more inmates!
Very good transition for Alcatraz guys, still found really good the angelfish, but yeah, they are not so active, they are more like hanging there in the surface lol jajaja
Since i watched this clip i killed 4 fish and wasted 2 tanks 😅😅😅.now im more knowledgeable now.this is called get educated before wasting your time and money.i love your cichlid.1 day i get 1 but now i have a fancy goldfish 😊
Sorry to hear you lost some fish. It’s hard times when that happens. I recently missed a step during a water change and lost over half the fish in my big tank. It was devastating. Glad to hear you’re learning though and keeping at it! Thank you!
The paint from the fake tree branches, leaves, and fake rocks I would imagine will fade and leach in to the tank over time. Like all other fake aquarium decor in the hobby.
Thanks. No. I still have to finish the stand, but it’ll be a bit. Probably won’t do a finishing video, as that might be a bit to specialized for most of my audience.
Washing the sand would have saved you time, hassle and products..Not a smart move i.m.o. btw stacking rocks in a straight line like you did takes away all illusion of depth.
Okay, it would have taken way longer to wash the substrate than to do what I did, and the product I used was very inexpensive, so no problem. Plus I would have had to actively wash it instead of letting the pump do it. Still, it was very clean compared to most substrate I’ve used.
Hello sir. Love your content. So I have some weird algae in my 55 gallon. It's an African cichlid setup. It's a Lake Tanganyika biotope. Rocks and more rocks 😂...ok so this has no fish AT ALL never did and this algae grew out of nowhere. it's white and it's all over the rocks and glass. I've cleaned it however it grows back. My question is should I just remove the rocks and substrate and start over ??? Pressure clean the rocks ? Or is it best to let it do its thing and just add fish ? I guess I'm quite lazy to start over unless it's the best thing to do. Please advise and thank you!
I’m not an expert on white algae, but if it was my tank, I’d leave the light off all the time and make sure it isn’t getting lots of sunlight. Clean the tank up, change the water and see if it grows back.
Looking to get back into this world! It’s been over 20 years. I want to go 180 to 240. Where is the best place to buy my tank and stand? Obviously retail is insanely priced as they have huge overheads. Any suggestions where I can save some cash and use the savings for plumbing, filtrations and setting up the perfect forever tank?
How exciting! Mine weren’t cheap from Fish Tanks Direct and Custom Aquariums. If you have a LFS they might be able to order a tank for you and save you some money. Used is a great way if you are comfortable with that. May need to do some work on scratches or silicone though.
My jerk is going to remain a jerk until another male grows up enough to challenge him. My strategy was to add PLENTY more rocks and stack them up so that there is a lot of cave pockets to hide. Worked like a charm. He's still a jerk but has less control over the tank. Other fish are relaxed and use the entire area now. But my cichlids are the small kind so there is plenty of room to remodel for them.
Make sure you don’t have any open holes at the top of your tank man, i’ve lost a couple eels many years ago due to escapes. They can find the smallest of holes too.
Wow congratulations on that new tank and those fish are absolutely beautiful I guess you could say you bought a new tank and I bought a new car they probably cost about the same
My texas cichlid loves to chase my fish especially my Oscar who is a bit bigger than him. They are very territorial and want the whole tank to themselves.
We shall see if a tank this size lets it work. If not, I know what to do. Strangely at this point, the Texas hates everyone except the chocolate, the Oscar and the salvini
