African cichlids are interesting fish, but much of the qualities that make them strange, also make them extremely lovable. Watch to see why you might love African cichlids -- all Malawi cichlids including peacocks and haps, as well as mbuna. If you like aquarium fish, maybe African cichlids would brighten your world!
Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

What do you think about these “weirdo” behaviors? Do you have any fish with amazing personalities?

I have a weird story perhaps unrelated. I have 2 Metriaclima sp. "Msobo Deep" Magunga in a mbuna community tank. One of them is the tank boss. The magunga tank boss attacked and almost killed one of my Maison Reef Chilumbas. I happened to be passing by and saw the maison reef chilumba fighting for its life on the floor of the tank upside down with badly damaged scales all over its body. I got it out of the tank, put it in an isolation box and doused it with API stress + .....it struggled for 3 - 4 hours and miraculously it was revived. i let it stay in there for 2 days before i released it back into the community tank and i moved the wannabe killer tank boss into isolation for 1 day. When i released the wanna be killer tank boss, it immediately got attacked by almost all the other mbunas....I didn't think anything of it. The next day, i found the wanna be killer tank boss dead! I did not feel bad at all....i thought to myself, live by the sword, die by the sword! it was a $65 fish, but poetic justice?

@@CichlidCharmerI agree, and not to sound like there’s a class to this, but I just learned not to expect the same and appreciate signs of vitality instead of the greeting. Having Molly or guppy is great, but having breeding groups larger than 10 or more then suddenly it becomes something else. But look at me writing lots again, time for a hobby 😂, stay happy and healthy my friend 😊❤

I’ve noticed some interesting behavior since I sold off my haps and went mbuna. First, when I sold the haps, I had two mbuna that I kept. While I was waiting for my shipment to arrive, those two mbuna became extremely skittish and hid constantly. When the shipment of 30 mbuna arrived and we’re added, the skittishness and hiding immediately stopped. The other interesting thing I’ve noticed is shoaling. I have groups of 4-5 of a few different types of mbuna and they seem to shoal with their own kind. I’m starting to wonder if the over aggressiveness is due to us being wrong all this time on how to stock them. Both of these lead me to believe they’re a somewhat social fish. Kind of like how tiger barbs become very aggressive without sufficient numbers. 🤷‍♂️ But good video, very interesting!
@CichlidCharmer
@CichlidCharmer 2 месяца назад
That’s really interesting- thanks for sharing that! I bet you’re right. I’ve actually heard that they like being in groups with their own species. People have even mentioned that you won’t see their true behavior until you have males and females in groups together, same species. I had a hard time deciding which way to go, but eventually settled on all male.
@NotSure876
@NotSure876 2 месяца назад
@@CichlidCharmer I’ve read both, that females will cause aggression and that females will mellow things out and make things more natural. I’m looking forward to updates on your Mbuna tank. It should be interesting to see the differences in behavior in our two setups.

CC, What a great video Sir. If you like the behavior of them coming to you wait until you have a CA/SA tank and those fish get bigger talk about water puppies and watching you. They do it but with way less aggression depending on the fish of course. I can’t wait to see what size tank you bought and what fish you chose for it. I am sure it will be amazing tank setup. The fish will have a great life you treat them all very well. I feed my fish freeze dried krill or shrimp as a treat. I am not that fancy feeding this raw shrimp. lol. Appreciate the videos sir and I can’t wait to see the CA/SA tank setup. ❤😂🎉

Yes, these fish are really weird. Have a 5:52 and stocked it 2 years ago to season the tank. A pile of platies. I thought the platies would be toast. Hahaha. 2 years later, the peacocks and haps are about 5 inches. And guess what?the platies are thriving. I mean don't do it, but for some reason my sickos leave the platies alone. Love your videos.

Gday mate , i really like your content and the way you present it , i guess i just relate to it, i’m from Hervey Bay in Queensland Australia and wanted to ask you if it’s possible to mix African cichlids,peacocks and haps , with the odd mbuna andFrontosa, i’ve only got the 2 frontoas, male 12cm and unsexed frontosa 8cm . I don’t want to upset the frontosa but i do like the endless colours and personalities of the africans
@CichlidCharmer
@CichlidCharmer 2 месяца назад
Gday back at you! Amazing - I love meeting people from Australia. Thanks for the encouragement, Steve 🥰. I don’t have any experience mixing my peas and haps with mbuna except for yellow labs, and definitely no frontosa. The diet is an issue with mbuna - yellow labs are more liberal with their veggie diet than most mbuna. And frontosa can struggle getting food with those bullet-fast peas and haps. You might have to target feed. So it isn’t generally a good idea, but I hear about and see people breaking these rules and it works for them sometimes. If you do it, just be prepared to keep a close eye on them for a while. Make sure they’re okay.

hey man have u tried putting a bunch of house plants ontop of ur aquarium sticking out with the roots packed to one side , i recently did over my tank and added them because they take out alot more bacteria than regular aquarium plants and the cichlids dont bother them but also i really recommend it mostly because if a peacock was getting bullied or whenever there tired they tend to go uptop near the filter for cover obviously in most cichlid tanks because we do no plants they dont usually have a place up high to hide like that , really really recommend it ( i know uv been having no problems but just taught id share it anyway because iv been having amazing results )

Hi mate, that’s the difference between African cichlids versus other types of freshwater fish, but the real question is maybe we are the nut jobs who love these fish just like their kids. I have been buying my prawns (krill) from the supermarkets for a very long time and the nut jobs go crazy for it. Makes it more cost affective as it does become expensive with lots of tanks to feed. Another great video buddy.

My favorite fish so far of these new guys has to be "ManMan" my Demasoni he just is in my face all the time and is the biggest photo bomber, yes ManMan you're a stud we all know it. Oh but we both know he can be the biggest jerk with all the other fish in the tank, a real pain. My guys and gals all get a treat now and again of BBS that I hatch, or frozen premade BBS and cut up shrimp and again we both know I hate shrimp and can't stand to touch or smell it, so my fish are lucky. Seafood IS disgusting. Especially sea bugs. Some fun trivia: there used to be rule that you couldn't even feed lobster to prisoners too often, because it was considered such disgusting, garbage meat. I'm surprised that female textilus hasn't taken over the tank yet. They always seem to be the most territorial. My mbuna figured out that I was slowly picking out old pieces of blue gravel. They would pile them up in the front and expect food as payment for their services.

The two fish in my tank that immediately go to the top of my tank to beg for food are my electric blue acara and my Haplochromis nyererei. It is as if they had not been fed in months. The other fish sort of follow their lead. I did get rid of my zebra obliquedens cichlid because he was relentlessly chasing my Haplochromis nyererei and tore up his fins. He was huge too and his face and stripes were jet black. As he got more black in color the meaner he was to my nyererei. The zebra obliquedens would often pick a fight with my rusty cichlid Iodotropheus sprengerae but that one is a mbuna and he would start doing his tail attack and chase him around. The nyererei would often swim beside my electric blue acara because the zebra obliquedens was afraid of him.

I keep a few of the more uncommon, wild caught Apistos because of their personalities and behaviors - they have actual personalities just like the Africans. They sift sand for food, but they also move sand to rearrange! One of my females actually had her first spawn with me in a "cave" of her own making! She moved all the sand out from under the center of a rock structure and laid her eggs on the rock ceiling of her little makeshift cave. 🥰 I LOVE to watch them sift around in the sand, hunting for food, and rearranging! It's one of the reasons I keep these wild caught species, because they have those natural behaviors. A lot of the more line bred Apisto species no longer have those behaviors. 😔 (And as much as I LOVE watching videos on Africans, I know myself and know I couldn't handle the potential aggression. Lol)
