Hi! My name is M-G, as in "OMG" without the "O."

I started this channel in 2019 after moving to Florence, Italy where I studied abroad for a few months. Being an American from a small town in Michigan, I definitely had some questions about this city after I got here.

Questions where when I asked them, the simple answers I received prompted me to say, "yeah... but why?" So with the help of some local friends and the good old fashioned internet search bar, I decided to do a little research myself, and honestly what I found was pretty interesting. So why not pass it along?

To anyone else who is studying abroad, traveling in a foreign country, or just has a curious itch, this channel is for you. Hope you enjoy! :)

Italians don't care if you order a cappuccino after 11. What we find strange is having one right after a meal or worse, with the meal. Once I saw a spanish couple eat a carbonara followed by a panino with prosciutto and mozzarella while sipping on a cappuccino. Free to do it but wtf?⁹

I read that it depends on that what part of Italy you live in. If you live in North of Italy then it should be ok but in the South of Italy or Sicily they will look at you like you were a lunatic. I don't know if its true, I just read that xd

Surely there are people in Italy like myself that work overnight shifts, so my morning/breakfast time is around 6pm. Would they be denied a cappuccino even if they explained their work schedule to the barista?

So the answer is : traditionally breakfast is the fuel for the day. That's why it is usually stuffed with eggs, bacon, sausage, bread, butter, etc. The milk added to the coffee is too super size the caloric intake in an otherwise normal coffee. It's the Italian coffee version of a Big Mac/Whooper/Baconator burger. Overindulgent.

To answer why it's even worst "during" a meal. It's partly because of its caloric value but also because mixing the taste of coffee and milk with salted food would ruin your meal experience. A person that drinks coffee with lunch to us is a person without palate and without taste. (Italian culture is basically judgemental btw)

Most americans won't understand this, especially the ones who get a daily venti starbucks with 3 pumps of a flavored sugar syrup that has enough sugar for a week. You can actually get a cappuccino past noon in most bars, but you like like a tourist. Try an espresso, it will probably be too strong for your taste but you can add sugar or even some liqueur.

How are Itallians on the subject of flat whites?
@rixe11
@rixe11 3 года назад
In Italy it's very rare to find a barista that know what is a flat white, you have to go in some "specialty coffee" bar or something like that. In a normal bar you can order a caffe, doppio, ristretto, macchiato, caffè latte, Cappuccino and a Marocchino. Stop. If you want a flat white just ask fo a cappuccino with less foam than a normal one.

Important question that will define if I'll eventually come to Italy this month , Do you make freddo espresso in Italy?
@fraz813
@fraz813 3 года назад
Well that's not something you can find everywhere (also because maybe you call it with an Italian name but it's not an Italian thing), but maybe there are some bar that can do sort of an iced coffee/freddo espresso (?). Anyways most of the times you'll find warm, short and strong coffee. Coffee needs to wake you up so you need something strong (there are some that prefer to drink it even without sugar so it's really bittery but wakes them up a lot I guess). The most usual I think are espresso, "short", "long" (with a bit more water so it's not so strong as short one), "double" which is even stronger, macchiato, cappuccino etc. Then there might be some typical coffee depending on the place you go, for example in my city (Padua) there is a coffee with mint, or in the south of Puglia there is an iced coffee with almonds milk. Maybe I talked too much, but I hope I've been helpful :)

@@fraz813 I love talking to much don't worry about doing it too. In Greece freddo/iced espresso is always double dose , very rare Quattro if you asked for it , sugar but that depends on preference I for example want half of a teaspoon , and ice . As I saw in the video Italians drink their coffee really quick , in hurry , cause as you said its purpose is to wake you up so I understand that how the coffee is in each country depends on the culture . I assume that's why Greeks came with the freddo version and prefer it, because for us having coffee is probably the most used thing we choose to do when getting out . We just go to a caffe with friends , order a freddo espresso and stay for at least 2 hours , talking playing cards etc. For waking up our parents and grandparents still choose the Turkish coffee but young people don't even do it when they are in hurry , we are so used to freddo espresso, I swear we are addicted we prefer it even in the coldest days, we get one in plastic even when we go for a walk etc. It is strong , but because we are slowly drinkers , plus the ice melts so it gets slowly more watery, it doesn't truly serve the purpose of waking you up quick . I really wonder are Italians ever sitting down for more time to drink the coffee with friends etc and if yes what coffee do you prefer for this occasion.
@fraz813
@fraz813 3 года назад
@@user-rc2gy5ik5n well except when we drink it for breakfast or after the other lunches (or when you have to use the toilets of a bar but you have to consume something to do it😅), we use to have it maybe when we want to go out with a friend. So we sit in a bar, drink a coffee and stay there to talk, maybe half an hour. A normal coffee takes just 2-3 sips to be finished, so it's something that ends fast and you can't stay there hours, or also bring it with you and drink it while you're walking like an iced coffee. Anyways we don't have a particular coffee in these occasions, usually an espresso or a macchiato, depends on the fact that someone may like it with or without milk (personally I'm the second one type of person, I prefer a pure coffee where I can taste it properly). PS. About sitting and drinking coffee: I personally use to do that if I'm with a person I don't see since long time, if I'm with more friends we're more probably going to have the so called "aperitivo", maybe with a Spritz (or in the afternoon before dinner, or in the evening after dinner). It's a type of cocktail (not so strong because also with a bit of water) and we stay there 1 hours or more enjoying it and talking
@fraz813
@fraz813 3 года назад
@@user-rc2gy5ik5n Anyways I'm not a big fan of iced coffee and I drank it just a few times when I went to England, but now you really made me want one of it😂 Anyways now I remember that in some places near the sea you can find the so called "Crema Caffe" (means like coffee cream) that is something between a coffee and an ice cream. Similar to a coffee but refreshing at the same time
