Red Letter Media is responsible for the 70 minute Phantom Menace review as well as Space Cop, Half in the Bag, and Best of the Worst. Full time frauds.
When I looked at the most recent Leo Fong movie on IMDB, I found "Pact of Vengeance" (2022), which happens to have co-stars Len Kabasinki (also director) AND Jon Mikl Thor!!
Movies coming out on physical dvd's blurays is so soon now too. It's like a few weeks sometimes the time frame of a movie releasing in theaters and going to dvd. There's no point in paying $100+ to see it in theaters when you can just wait a few weeks, or months at most, buy the dvd and own it forever. You can watch it as many times as you want. I remember back in the early 2000s it would be like almost a year/6-8 months before the dvd/vhs would come out, i think it made them more money this way. See a good movie in theaters, let it die down a bit and then those same people might want to watch it again later by getting the dvd (with all the cool features, bts, deleted scenes etc.) What the hell happened to all that?
Not usually one to leave comments, and its off-topic so feel free to ignore me if you've already covered this. I'd love to hear you discuss your time on Smiling Friends. Possibly some sort of a watch-along discussion where you maybe react to the series as a whole and talk about what the behind the scenes were like etc? I know you don't focus on cartoons on your channel which is why I think its fine to ignore me, but I think many others including myself would love to see this. (Then again, you have covered some cartoons in a round-about way. Could be fun! Keep it up guys, love the content)
This movie concept would work on a train or a cruise ship. Much more room to work with on either of those which can help sell the believability of the protagonists being able to stay hidden while performing the heist.
There's a lot more you could've said about the differences between A New Hope and The Phantom Menace regarding the characters. In ANH, the droids are automatically sympathetic and funny; they're underdogs, and you root for them. In TPM, the Jedi are stiff throughout the entire first act. The same is true with Leia and Padme. Padme is a block of wood; she has no personality. Leia is snarky. Luke is introduced 15 minutes in, Anakin is introduced 37 minutes in, and the fact that he's a child leaves him with little agency. Darth Vader is introduced 3 minutes in and has multiple badass scenes right at the movie's start. Darth Maul takes over half an hour to get a short introduction through a hologram. The movie has all of the same roles but none of the pathos of the original.
There's a theater near me that shows a blend of new films and older / cult films. They also have a drive-in nearby. The older films actually fill more seats then the new ones (interesting that, huh?). The staff are wonderful people who give a fuck and the place is clean and relatively cheap. The last few years they've also been hosting events. For example, I attended a date of Bruce Campbell's "The Evil Dead" 40th anniversary tour. It was a double screening of "The Evil Dead" and "Highly Functional" with a meet and greet / Q&A afterward. It sold out in like 2 days and I tend to put things off so I was lucky to get tickets. This and similar events seem to do very well. I can't say this business model would work for every theatre but it seems to work here. To be fair though, I don't actually know how they're doing financially. A couple years ago they did a complete overhaul to the drive-in and some things to the theater so it can't be that bad right?
I have to respectfully disagree with this review. Deckard as a Replicant makes total sense and explains his awkwardness and love for Rachael, another Replicant. While Replicants have memories they are immature emotionally so that explains a lot of what happens. It also adds to the overall repression of the film where Replicant are tasked with hunting their own kind. And yes ridley Scott is an asshole but he's made some great films. So whatever.
This just felt very obvious to me, like emotions were designed to be communicated to the lowest common denominator in the audience. Nothing felt earned, there was no threat, and the tone was all over the place like it was trying to be a heartfelt drama while getting a quip quota in.
On rewatch, I realize I've been to two of the theaters they announce are closing in the opening montage lol The one in Johnston IA and St Andrews Columbia
Going to the movies for me is rarely a good experience anymore. I'm sitting in a packed, dark room surrounded by strangers. Lord knows my chance of catching something from one of them is pretty high. And who knows when was the last time the seats or the floor were properly cleaned? Could I be stepping or even sitting in someone else's urine? Stepping or sitting on someone else's spilled drinks? And beyond that, audiences just don't know how to behave in public anymore. The talking and the phones illuminating are quite annoying, but there's always a spectre of violence erupting during any given screening, either inside or outside the theatre. The prices are exorbitant for tickets and for concessions, we're inundated with ads before the movie starts, and the movies are...just not that good. Even for a good film, I would much prefer curling up on my couch in my pajamas watching something on my big screen instead of the theatre experience.

This is the only movie I've seen twice in a theater. At the time the sfx were pretty good. I remember when Anakin lands that ship in the beginning when the camera zooms in to show him in the cockpit was kind of mind blowing. I guess I'm in the minority but yeah, I like this movie. Not sorry
Another major difference I notice is that the John Williams score in the OT enhanced the already exciting story and visuals. But as good as the score was in the prequels, it came across as trying to tell us how we should be feeling about what was happening, it never matched the emotion the scene was creating.
I've organised a movie day with my friends for Deadpool and Wolverine but for most movies I don't care to go see because there are too many movies, series and games to consume and I only care to consume so many things at a time.
I had no idea there was already a remake of The Thing. That's disappointing! I thought in the right hand's it'd be awesome to have a remake. Would love to see an animated remake or in the same vein of It Comes at Night where we don't get any of the "it's an alien" explanation. Maybe someday a good indie director will take interest in it and we can get something that isn't a CGI mistake lol
was watching newest ep of smiling friends and i knew that orange aliens laugh was familiar. I was so mad I didnt recognize rich evans and mike at first
13:40 Several years ago, the Silent Hill film pulled off a primitive version of this trick. The main actress was given over a dozen variations of the same costume and the effect is that by the end her clothes have gone from blue tones to completely red. It was very cool to wonder when she got covered in blood and look back to realize it never happened.
I saw the Tuskegee Airmen movie HBO made, and I thought it was great at the time, but it wasn't a feature and is somewhat outdated today. When I heard about Red Tails I was excited! But, so disappointed when I saw it. There deserves to be a better film about this. Lucas was absolutely the wrong person to make it.
