Dear friends, Mike totally forgot Time Addicts was Australian not British. It was a while since he had seen it and when they talk trashy them kind of sound alike. It's kind of like when people say Milwaukee is in Michigan. Or that Minnesota is in Wisconsin, or that Minneapolis is in Milwaukee. No one really knows where these places are. If someone says "Blimey!" "Dodgy" or some other word it's "British". And when Mike says "British" he means "Everywhere else in the world except Wisconsin" and as we all know Wisconsin is the best place in the galaxy.
Don't give a shite that Darth Maul fight and the John William's score still makes it up at the end. Attack of the Clones was way way worse. That was a not acceptable.
Fun fact: It was owned by relatives of real ninja master ans martial arts film star Ashida Kim and he made some appearances at the store for signings, etc.
I used to think that they got their massive collection from a video store in Wisconsin that went out of business and have told everyone that I've introduced to this channel that story.
Only Hollywood people can get into a disfiguring accident and come out looking better. He's not the first actor to get plastic surgery and blame it on a fake car wreck.
I don't know if you will see this, Rich Evans, but I have a movie to whole heartedly reccomend to you! It is just up your alley. It is called Alien Hunt, and my favorite thing about it is that there are NO trees in the film.
Hi! Director of Alien Hunt here. Uhh - HOLY SHIT! Consider me honored! You even pronounced my name right! 🥲 Our movie is tiny. Like: barely-had-money-for-bug-spray tiny. So this is badass. PS - You SHOULD watch the movie! It was made to be a fun throwback to the drive-in/sci-fi Roger Corman-esque (RIP!!) movies of the 60s and 70s! We worked hard and had a lot of fun making it!! 🛸
@@bradbelemjian4221 The guy who plays Topher, while handsome, is not a gopher. He is odd though. He kept sucking on nearby car exhaust pipes between takes. Big time diva.
If you can believe it, the Iron Claw movie is TONED DOWN from the real story. They had ANOTHER brother who also took his own life, and the father often monetized each brother's death with a memorial show.
Yeah, I understand why the director chose to remove him from the story and he cleared it with Kevin (though the director also stated he made sure he would still be able to move forward with that idea if he objected), but it still really feels wrong for a movie so much about the family. I also heard Chris, the brother in question, struggled with feeling like he was really a Von Erich, removing him completely from the story certainly feels wrong all the more because of that.
Best part of Alien Hunt: when the big burly short hair woman is escaping with her team from the alien and then she says "RUN, GO! GET TO THE CHOPPER!". It was AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING!!! Classic 11/10
And more broadly the decline of the entire internet. These guys are one of the last channels to stay as consistent as they were back in the 90s. Oh wait wait I meant the “late two-thousands / early twenty tens”. Oh wait I meant the 1940s.
@@user-dnf83n0s8sg9u yeah my theory on how they're still good is because they don't seem to let their audience dictate their content and instead just make stuff about things they are interested in. If they didn't, Mr. Plinkett would probably be the only content they could make. The only other "old school" channel i can think of that hasn't fallen off is EmpLemon, also for the same reasons.
Kim's Video sounds like a feature length Half in the Bag skit, I'm just picturing Mike and Jay searching an abandoned warehouse full of rotting tapes and stopping to talk about movies they've seen. Rich Evans shows up as a Mafia boss, it writes itself!
A quick note for whoever that guy is that I'll always just call Mr. Plinkett about movie gun tropes: You also pump a pump shotgun after you load it because you need to load a round into the chamber behind the barrel. Before you do that, there are shells in the magazine, but the gun won't be 'charged' and can't fire. Because pump action shotguns generally have a magazine which is permanently attached to the shotgun, you keep that magazine loaded without charging the shotgun, and then pump to charge and put a round in the barrel when necessary so that you cut down on unintentional discharges and potential accidents. It's true that once you've loaded and pumped it once, subsequent pumps will remove the existing round from the chamber and put a new one in its place.
I have this idea of a progressive load for home defense, you start out with birdshot, go over to buckshot and then use dragons breath simply to inflict psychic damage
@@jonne7725 maybe even insert a beanbag and saltshot first so you can play with em a bit? or i dunno those beanbagshots are probably not loaded in a regular old "shotgun"?
I mean Jay shows a town on a map clearly in Sicilia and later went "I was not expecting any involvement of the Mafia". As enlightened as they are, they're still Americans.
The Abigail twist reminds me of when I showed my wife From Dusk Til Dawn and only told her it was a crime thriller. Her reaction was the best I've ever seen.
I was almost excited that Mike was bringing up Alien Hunter, a weird and charming small-budget movie starring James Spader written by a clear UFO enthusiast with no knack for storytelling whatsoever. But then I realized he's talking about Alient Hunt, some nothing shot-in-the-woods movie starring nobody.
Mike is wrong about the shotgun. You pump it to chamber the first round after loading. I’m not financially tied to Alien Hunt which you can watch now on Prime Video and Fandango.
Maybe it was them pumping it a second time, and they just didn't put it in the video for us to see? I know that's what Jay was referring to at least. When they pump it and go "lets go get that bad guy". Then they aim it at the bad guy and go "freeze!" and pump it again.
@@jasongarcia2140 On a pump shotgun you would load the shells into a tube under the barrel. Then you rack a round - which places a shell into the chamber. After firing the round you rack again, which ejects the spent shell, and loads a new one. So in a way, you do load it twice on the first shot.
Alien Hunt was a cinematic masterpiece. The film in no way was able to captivate the viewer and it honestly fell flat in many aspects related to script but the monster in it kinda reminded me of that movie Alien so I left it on while my house burned down from a grease fire.
Really looking forward to more distinctive and weird film recommendations and wherever else you guys take this channel. I don’t mind at all if you move further away from big budget franchise reviews, I’m just glad to see more reviews.
when he was like "his jaw got huge, apparently from some accident he was in...and he's all buff now," was that an intentional joke about not knowing what steroids are? or was that genuine...either way, lol
@@sam_bibly Genuine, I've seen that mentioned in news articles in the past. I think he brought it up on a late night appearance as well. Some BS story about how he broke his jaw and his masseters grew back 3x their size after the recovery process or something. I never believed it. I just figured he got some Hollywood plastic surgery to increase his masseters, as large masseters in guys are a trend right now with all the hype around mewing among the youth, and came out looking kinda weird.
As a longitme wrestling fan, I won't even bother with this one. The Wrestler 2008 was already miserable and depressing, and that's the only angle they have for wrestling it seems. Something fun and amazing like those 15 minutes in Rocky III would be a nice change of pace. That's how you style and profile! WOOOOOOOO
When I heard the name "Jim Cummings" I immediately thought they were talking about the Voice actor, and somehow he had directed multiple films; but no turns out this is a completely different Jim Cummings.
Speaking of re-releases, a local theatre had a 45th anniversary re-release of Alien a few weeks back, and when we went it was my friend, and literally only two other people in the theatre, and I want to cry.
While it is funny to hyperbolize saying that all the SW Prequel hate came after the Plinket reviews, you cannot deny the reach and impact those videos had not just on Star Wars fandom, but online critiques and humour in general. The "video essay" as we know it today spawned from those reviews. For good or bad, not to overfluff it, but it was really like South Park often was. It changed things even for people who were either unaware of it or only knew it second-hand. And the people who made the sequels undoubtedly saw those reviews and were influenced by them when they made their scidmarks on the cinematic toilet bowl of history.
I'd recommend watching comedy shows from around the time the prequels came out; the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones being irredeemable crap was part of the zeitgeist of the 00's. There are episodes of things like the Simpsons and Spaced that riff on it. While the Plinkett videos certainly didn't help those movies reputation, claiming RLM is responsible for those films' reputation is like saying Rise of Skywalker was only disliked because of MauLer or something (arguably even more ridiculous since at least MauLer and his tedious videos are contemporaneous of the Disney SW movies).
@@laurenpeacock6343 Years ago in some video that I cannot remember the name of, Mike said something to the effect of the Plinkett reviews being the basis of internet reviews from that point forward. They are aware of how impactful those videos have been on internet culture. Hell, I watched a video game review that came out a few weeks ago that had a dude doing the Mr. Plinkett voice.
I did exactly that. I went with my wife who was sad about the recent death of her sister and so we went to see a film about wrestling. I didn't even realise it was a true story until Ric Flair turned up.
Imagine if From Dusk Til Down came out in the modern era. Everybody would be spoiled going into it. But maybe they were in the 90s. I was just a kid when it came out and I don’t remember any of the marketing for it.
Three White Russians in and I have to say, 'Alien Hunt' is good fun. Also, my wife and I have never talked so much about life. We balanced our budget and planned the next 3 years of vacations all before the ending. Thanks for recommending this movie, it truly helps people accomplish their goals and enjoy each other's company. /cheers
Re-releasing a "classic" film in theaters for an anniversary is usually a cause for celebration... for almost any other franchise (yes people genuinely like that movie). Even if it was one of the good ones, Star Wars is just so worn out that it doesn't even matter. Also, this is the second time since the original run that Episode 1 has been re-released. Seeing the 3D conversion in the theater was what made me realize that Episode 1 has some cool stuff in it, but it's mostly just boring.
@@ASpooneyBard The very first Honest Trailer I ever watched (remember them?) talked about how you could "Relive the biggest letdown of your childhood... IN 3D!"
There was another Von Erich brother, but he wasn't included in the Iron Claw because addressing every suicide would have felt like tragedy exploitation.
No Dune Part II though? I mean, I'm pretty checked out of all the big blockbuster Marvel movies or anything Star Wars or Godzilla or whatever, but that guy, Villeneuve, he has a vision goddammit, and it's beautiful!
Didn't know about Kim's video collection. It kind of figures: the mayor of Salemi at the time was Vittorio Sgarbi, an art historian/critic and media personality, very prominent to this day. He has recently (and briefly) been our Culture undersecretary. Apparently the whole project went downhill after his term was up...and yes, of course the municipality was infiltrated by the mafia.
I remember kims video from when I first moved to New York. They literally had everything you had never heard of. Such good recommendations, the staff really knew their stuff. It was just a film buffs paradise on earth. That store, plus Two Boots (which was a video store/pizza place), was the shit in early 2000s New York.
@@Jumbleman5I thought it was good as a kid because I was 5 years old and entertained by flashing lights and laser sounds and spaced out through all of the boring shit in between.
@@Jumbleman5 I remember seeing ROTS when I was 14 and thought it was a giant piece of shit, so I have no idea what the hell zoomers are on about when they say it's the best SW movie, let alone a masterwork of cinema.
Racking a Shotgun is how you load a shell from the underside spring loaded tube, up to be fired. It’s Called “police-carry”, by keeping the shells in the tube underneath the barrel, you prevent accidental discharges.
The best part of being an alcoholic is that I can hear all that junk about Abigail and know that in a month I'll have forgotten all of it by the time I get to the movie in my backlog
Thanks for the video guys, really looking forward to seeing all the stuff you've recommended here. Please do more of this format, I end up seeing amazing films i would otherwise never have heard of
Was hoping you guys had seen Challengers, it's a great movie, and for some reason I always got the vibe maybe Jay or someone (I know Tim has worn a Nine Inch Nails shirt on BotW but not sure how much editing he does) on the channel was a Trent Reznor fan. The intro to "Mike and Jay Talk About" has a very industrial music sound and the visuals remind me of the cover to The Fragile. And Trent/Atticus' score for Challengers is so fucking sick.
Iron Claw actually removed an additional brother that also killed himself. The filmmakers thought it was too much of a bummer so they pretended there was one less suicide in the family.
@@Epsilonsama thats so heartless imo, i can get drastically reducing screen time of one of them but to just cut them out as if they didnt exist… wonder if he maybe had a personal grudge against that brother. It just seems wrong to me, idk.
The bit about Kathryn Newton being on the verge of laughter reminds me of how I see Elizabeth Moss. That woman always looks like she's about to burst into tears and sob uncontrollably
It's nice to finally see RLM address the mind-numbingly incorrect take that everybody loved the prequels until Mr. Plinkett came along. Honestly it's been sickening seeing hordes of people online try and do historical revisionism for things we were actually around for.
@@paladin56 I mean I watched them as a kid too. I liked them when I was little, but when ROTS came out and I was a little older, I realized "oh, this is why the adults hate these movies".
@@HenskelionI remember watching them as a kid and never specifically thought it was terrible (I was a kid, I didn’t have that distinction yet) but I never had any desire to go back to the prequels. You know which discs I wore out? The OT.
Regarding cocking shotguns. Many people load their shotguns with the action closed and store them that way for safety purposes. That way it is as ready as it can be without it being able to go off if someone happens to grab it and just pull the trigger. In such a case, you have to cock it to load the first shell before firing. It would not eject a shell because there is not yet one in the chamber. So the cocking of a shotgun before using it is not only cinematic, but does actually make practical sense in the case laid out above.
The RLM guys are RU-vid royalty, Mike is considered a a credible and reliable voice in this space, yet he still watches stuff like Alien Hunt on Vudu. Very good
Been watching since the plinkett reviews and never commented but wanted to drop my two cents: You guys are right, who cares about an hour video about Godzilla X Kong? Personally, I would love if you did these more often. You always put me onto at least one or two great movies I wouldn't have noticed otherwise (checking out Lousy Carter and Snack Shack off these videos), and I really enjoy hearing your thoughts on "smaller" stuff like Abigail and Love Lies Bleeding. Covering Marvel movies etc was great when it was relevant, but there's only so much to say about that stuff at this point and I'm much more interested in seeing the channel evolve and "mature". Love your output regardless, thanks for all the laughs and insight.
Thank you for spreading the Holt McCallany love, Jay! I was that one kid who was waaaay into Alien³ when it came out. I read the novelization, memorized all the prisoner's names (just like I did with the previous film's Marines) and went out of my way to follow up on a lot of the amazing cast that was featured's other movies, before and since. Holt is one of many favorite actors from that film and has been my personal Clu Gulager or Cameron Mitchell growing up.
ABIGAIL felt like the greatest remake that Dark Castle never got to do. And seeing it in a nearly empty theater without having seen that much of the trailer was heaven on earth.
Last Stop in Yuma County is a solid 90 minute slice of film making. Great characters, great tension and definitely feels a bit like a 90s film. It’s weird, if it had been released in the 90s it would have been lost in the mix, but being made and released now it feels like a breath of fresh air. Highly recommend.
the amount of people thinking Star Wars prequels are disliked because of Plinkett's video is insane. It's usually terminally online 20yo who weren't alive when the movie came out. I was a shitty teenager so I liked the movie but pretty much every parent was talking shit about the movie, same for the nerds who ordered some merch from abroad (there weren't many stores for geeks in my country in early 2000s, pokemon cards was the only thing we were able to get on a regular basis) and tried to cancel their orders after watching the movie
Many of the surviving tapes and DVDs from the Kim's Video library have made their way back to NYC. They're now on display at the lower Manhattan Alamo Drafthouse, where you can browse and rent films from the collection for free. I haven't watched the documentary yet, but am curious if this detail is included at the end.
CORRECTION YOU FUCKS: The main Kim's was open well into the 2000s and 2010s, I had friends who worked there and it was a great place to run into famous weirdos. It was a pretty uh...funky place and it did indeed have an insane amount of movies. The one in the East Village, where my friends worked and which was kind of the main hub, didn't close until 2014, so it was an iconic thing well into my young adulthood in 2000 and 2010s NYC. Sorry about the fucks thing,
