I appreciate the "mea culpa" regarding the previous episode. I had to listen it in 1.75. 😅 You are right on the intention part, but I guess if you want to reach some significant conclusion regarding composition you should start seeing things in a different way. Try dividing an image in two different levels that work simultaneously. You have meanings in one level and you have plain shapes in the other. When we make an image we are stamping shapes on a two dimensional plane, there are no subjects, no negative space, no grids, no rule of thirds, etc. Just see shapes for what they are. If you can get rid of the meanings (Its not that easy, Ill go there in a moment) youll start seeing that perception of shapes works in frequencies. Shapes can be yuxtaposed in certain ways that play with contrast. Some artists can perceive these frequencies clearer than others, but certainly with a lot of work an artist gets "better" when with practice and time it naturally finds these relations. These frequencies are objective but they work with relativity. It doesnt matter what shapes you use but the relation between them. Thats why this applies to any "style"(selection of shapes) The human brain assigns meaning to shapes automatically and thats why its hard to see the abstract relation between them. We see figure and background when in reality theres no such thing, figure is a shape and background is a shape and both are at the same level and have the same importance in the composition. Talking of grids, rules of thirds, golden proportion enhances the confusion instead of clearing it. You should be talking more of value, contrast, hierarquies, focus... these are more precise terms for describing raw perception. And then see how they align with the simultaneous level of meanings.
How does the screen protector do with a regular apple nib? Does it feel a lot better that plain glass?.. without the protector taking damage? Does it trash the plastic nib? Has anyone tried this?
Thanks for a very insightful episode. Putting one's actual photo on portfolios etc is not necessarily as straightforward as first appears. Personal identity theft is rife, especially with the rise of AI and deep fakes. However, drawn/illustrated avatars can offer some protection. I'm very interested to hear your thoughts on this point.
@TomFroese , thanks for responding. Do you have any thoughts on my point regarding being cautious about identity theft, as per my message? As a practising illustrator, I'm aware of needing to consider this.

Yes! Once you’ve scanned your art into Photoshop you can follow these directions exactly. The catch is that your drawing should already be vectorizable in the first place. This won’t work if you have any shades of grey. It can only be black or white.
Meta apps may themselves be using AI all the time and they've spoilt the search bar on FB with that AI assistant. But when we, the human users upload a creative content piece, it is ever ready to flag it as "AI generated".
As of 9/17/2024, if you don't see the AI Info button when editing your post, it is likely that you are on Android. I don't have the option to modify AI label on my main android device, but I have the option on iOS device. Thank you for the help Tom.
Why wouldn’t you simply save the image as a high resolution bitmap. You can apply spot colors to it in illustrator for printing and bam done in a fraction of the time with a smaller file size and no worry about the vector not tracing well
Because for some inexplicable reason, screen printers insist on vectors. I wrote an entire article about this on my substack explaining why what you just said is possible.
Illustrator's Image Trace results have never been satisfying to me, even when giving Illustrator an easy logo to trace it stills adds some weird curves where there should be straight lines. This was a much needed tutorial, and I am so glad I finally found something that legitimately keeps the details you want. Thank you very much!!
Thanks for the video, unfortunately even after trying this several times it switches on again. I’m a designer and used illustrator to make a scrolling photo collage with a panorama bg.
The algorithm that decides what's AI is so broken, i just posted photos I and friends took last night and it says AI, info. Its girls at a skate park WTF
Hey Tom, thanks for the review. I would be really interested on how you use Astropad with Photoshop. I tried it once, but could not get it to work right.
Hope it helped! It’s never been an issue for me. They have a week trial for Astropad Studio I think. Read the instructions and give it another shot. Make sure you have a strong home wifi connection or better yet a usb connection. I’ve never been happy with wireless performance.
@@TomFroese too much for a keyboard which is only locked to procreate. This closer to the price of the Apple Pencil, and this keyboard isn’t nearly as impactful on your art as the Pencil, especially the pro. They need to streamline production and lower it to 30$ minimum. Other than thst I will stick to my Logitech portable keyboard
Mine only shows "AI info" from my other account, so I don't see it on the account I posted the picture from... Hence I can't turn it off, cause it's not there to click on.
Hi! Thank you for making this video! I am a graphic design student and am planning on using this technique for my next project. I followed along with your video, using simple shapes, instead of illustrating something as a trial. When I went to fill in the shapes with the risograph brush, it shows up white, instead of the color the layer is set to. I was wondering if you know what was causing this and could help? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!
I know this was 4 years ago but thank you for making this. I am just starting out but now I have a starting point. I need to build up my portfolio and then in 6 months I'm going to start looking for work. I'll probably come back to this comment and let you know how I am faring hopefully I can have a career before I turn 30 which is 3 years away.😂
Over time I have learned to fight the urge to get defensive when receiving constructive criticism. More often than not I end up finding a solution that pleases both my client and my inner artist. If I make an honest effort to consider my clients feedback and still can't find a solution, that's when I'll push back. As a sensitive creative-type this has saved me a lot of stress over the years.
Instagram needs to fix this asap. I’m getting this posted on still images from my own documentary with no way to save the “no label” option - it just keeps defaulting back.
hey mr.tom please answe me, need help this is good information, i am working on a mural project, which will be printed in 5mx3m. i am still confused to make the masterfile/artwork. so do i have to make a canvas in photoshop with a4 size with 600 dpi. and draw it there. then i convert it to 50 dpi with a size of 5 meters, is that something right? 🙏🙏
Thanks for the comment. I’m Photoshop, set up canvas at the real world mural dimensions, and set the resolution to 50dpi. You don’t need to covert anything after that.
@@iSaleArt You're working in Photoshop. Send the PSD file. JPGs are lossy. Speak with the printer of the mural, they will tell you exactly what they want from you.
