A snapshot, dedicated to all those musicians, producers, writers, promoters, club owners, radio presenters, record store owners, fans et al, born in or 'adopted' by Southern Africa that played their part in creating the scene as we know it today!
Always remember Greenpoint Scout Hall... Jimmy Retief and the Idiots were just the absolute berries... I once requested Jock de Coito to please play Purple Haze and lo and behold, everytime my friend and I walked into the Hall, he'd begin the opening riffs of Purple Haze... What an ego boost for a little 14 year old...!!!
The Diamonds were the first live band I saw. I went to a Joburg restaurant with a couple of friends. I remember the tables had red and white checked tablecloths, and the menu was chicken in a basket. I was mightily impressed by the band.- especially when my one friend, who knew them, told me that the tune they were playing was being made up on the spot. That was my introduction to improv. They bucked the prevailing trend by playing Jazzmasters- rather than Srats which helped them have a unique sound. That was a real blast from the past, thanks for posting. p.s. Unfortunately, I never saw Dana.
One for the home team Marq. You are the epitome of the proverb "don't judge a book by it's cover". The content you upload many of my generation and before would never chalk up to a heavy metal, biker. Not my genre of music but you make an impression on societies' thoughtless classing of people by their outward appearance. Kudos to you Marq. 👏
Good old springbok radio days. I used to listening to Taxi, consider your verdict, squad cars my favourite, the mind of tracy dark, basis bravo, springbok radio treffers parade, wolwe dans in the skemer, man the list is endless. It was really a big blow when springbok radio closed shop. In my opinion it was the best radio station of all times.
