As per Billy Forrest’s Teen Magazine “Pop Gear” (July 1966 edition).
The Sundowners, after going professional, the vocal trio from Durban, reached popularity quickly, playing to a crowd of 4,000 people in Braamfontein and then going to play a season in Southern and Northern Rhodesia, also appearing on Rhodesian T.V.
Comprising of Barry Wheeler, Stan Cunningham and Steve Hunter, they recorded two singles for EMI’s Columbia Label in 1963. The trio was due to record further tracks on retuning to South Africa.
They surprisingly disbanded in 1964 and Cunningham and Hunter founded The Difference (MK1) with Dave Ridgeway, Neville Kearns and Peter Hunter (Steve’s brother). Rupert Mellor joined after the departure of Stan and Steve. The Difference were signed by Grahame Beggs who produced their two singles released on the Phillips label.
in 1966 and 1967, respectively, “I Wonder Why”/”Running Downhill” (Phillips, SSP 939), and “You Wanted My Love” /”Where Do I Stand” (Phillips, SSP 957).
The Sundowners - “Magic Train”. Composed by Barry Wheeler, Stan Cunningham, Steve Hunter.
