We are a small homestead in the Whitsundays, Queensland. Come and join our journey of self sufficiency, learning and have fun with the collies along the way.
Just joined your channel. Will follow with interest as you transform this middle of nowhere place. Tropical North Queensland is the place to be. Congratulations on your move.
Try honey and borax for the ants did alright with me .also watch vintage food farm RU-vid couple who grows food near cairns Also mark from self sufficient he’s in seq but still sort of applies to your area. How do the sweet potatoes grow during the wet season I thought they liked the heat . And same like you summers where I am means a good rest from growing stuff. But other than that you can grow all year round. Enjoyed your videos greetings from Brisbane.
Hi Kym When we had an abundance of dragon fruit, we would slice them and then dehydrate them. Dragon fruit chips. So sweet and we got to eat them all year round.
Hi Kim, (sorry I called you Kelly in my last comment). Chop and freeze. If your freezer isn’t big enough……buy another one. We got a really cheap chest freezer at the tip shop. Works perfect. I have the same problem with humidity here. Freeze potatoes…everything. I put chillies straight into sandwich bags and into the freezer too.
@@colliecountryhomestead put a sheet of baking paper on a flat tray and slice the fruit (not chop) and pop in the freezer. Once done, remove and put in plastic bag/s and back in the freezer. Yum, yum pig’s bum.
Hi Kelly. Theres nothing like home grown pineapples and bananas. Really shows up the supermarket crap we’ve had peddled to us all our lives. I know what you mean, sweating. I’m drenched after hanging out a load of washing. Then I just go and fall into my plunge pool. I wonder if you planted asparagus amongst the chilly plants….companion plants and maybe the little buggers won’t touch them? Yep, I’m done with sweet potato, they’re really greedy for real estate and overtake anything in the area. egg plants….never shut up, they just keep cycling…over and over. Wayyyyy too many. and those small chillies. I found we’ve got them for life, as once they fall on the ground, every bloody single seed comes up and now there’s 2000 more…ahhhhhhhhh. Is there anyone at work to swap produce with? We also have @ pumpkin vine that’s gone crackers. We just chuck a Frozen and ‘let it go’. Yeh, here in Hervey Bay we’re keeping an eye out. I don’t watch msm bullshit. I watch ‘weatherwatch’ with Phillip on youtube. He gives it to you straight.
Hiiiiiiii Kelly. Been wondering about you. I freeze my chillies and dehydrate some of them and store them in jars. I didn’t have much luck with loufas. I WILL try them again. Grasshoppers hate peppermint. I put some oil drops in water in a spray bottle. I know what you mean about ‘sense of community’. Ants….just for fun, try spraying vinegar on the wood where they travel. A pest control guy told us to do that around our air cons to keep the lizards from damaging the electrical parts on the units. Bunnings have a real strong vinegar for cleaning. Give it a go. So, greetings from Hervey Bay. Look after yourself.
Your chilli’s look amazing and the flowers beautiful! We’re 2 years off grid now, very difficult but very rewarding lifestyle. Your puppies are so cute!
Maybe look into preserving chillis & capsicums & vegies, by tieing them onto fishing line & airdrying them to preserve...old school way, no electricity needed.😁Disposable nappies are great to lay out when it rains, the crystals inside them help with water retention for your vegie gardens.😊
Ooohhh exciting! Plant aloe vera 4 green ant bites! The plants dont need much water..plant citronella, & lemongrass which can help with bugs & mozzies.
Yeh, we’re doing the same here in Hervey Bay. Rolled out the shade cloth yesterday. I freeze capsicums straight away, as is, when I pick them. They defrost great. I use them on pizzas etc. we ripped out the tomato plants after picking every one of them, green and all. We’ve already got more tomato plants and off we go again.
Hi Kim, thank you for this update on your garden. Just a thought to prevent your cucumbers and cabbage from being eaten by bugs try companion planting like mint and spring onions next to them. Garlic may help too. I’m glad Gracey is doing better now. Those foxes can get the chooks too. Put mesh under the chook house as well. Keep up the great efforts. You inspire me.
I join and 👍.... yes ❤️ already growing all. ) you buy a fantastic place. For dreams can come true. Please setup for bad bad weather. God bless mick . )
Congrats on your move. But please don't thin out your trees too much. Youree going to need them and the earth needs them now, with climate change here now.. 🐶🦮🐝🌻🌱🌿🌴Take care
Hi Kim, yes I would love more about your beautiful dogs. My son loves to watch your videos just to see the dogs wondering around. They are so funny. Great herb garden.
Great video. I notice you bend a lot. Always work with a wheel burrow at waist height so no more bending. Save your back. Your wheel burrow will become your best friend.
I love watching your progress videos. When we had chickens the foxes got most so we put chicken wire under the chook house and the area they run around. It worked. Just have to remember to lock chook house before dusk.
You can eat the backsides of the green ant , they taste like sherbet and are quite expensive to buy, rub them into a side of salmon and let it sit for 2 days , cook to your liking it will blow your mind
