My fiance and I got a dachshund puppy at the end of February. The boy is about to turn five months old. Neither of us ever trained a dog before, so he's been essentially running our lives. This mini-tutorial has helped immensely. Any advice for how to get him to actually go for a walk? We set him down on the ground with his leash and he'll look at us until we pick him back up.

What age do you normally start stipping their coat? What length blade do you usually use fine, medium, or coarse?

I have a male standard wire haired. His parents were both show dogs but his coat was deemed not show worthy so he was sold as a pet. I adopted him on his first birthday. It is very hard to find a groomer that hand strips wire hair dogs. My groomer, who it took me 6 months to find, retired so I am going to be giving it a shot. He usually gets groomed every 3-4 months. Should I be doing it more often? Maybe it’s me, but when he has his outer coat pretty full after 2-3 months it looks uncomfortable. Plus the summers in Texas are HOT. He is a brindle like your little girl.

We are just now expecting to take our next little doxie into our lives in just a few weeks once he is ready to go home. Any recommendations on house breaking? I have a seven month old long-haired dachshund and it’s starting to become impossible! he is neutered but he will still just randomly P in the house even after we’ve already gone outside and he’s done his business. He jumps up on furniture and poops on it. does not ask to go outside. I am home all day with him trying new techniques. my breeder pretty much just told me I need a belly band for a while because otherwise there would be pee stains all over the house that I wouldn’t even notice. I’m keeping him on a house leash 3 feet from me and he will still pee directly beside me. He has been to the doctor and does not have any medical condition or UTI help!!!😮

I don't' get the point of the clicker. He learns by hearing the prompt word "twist" and then getting a treat after doing the action.

Dont you need to reduce the calories (portion sizes) you give them their meals due to all of the treats they get while training?

What tools are best for handstripping? I bought a set of knives off amazon but they dont seem that effective. Ive never handstripped before but now have a wirehair minature dachshund so trying to teach myself how to do this

Is this during shedding seasons or just how it always is? I read Tamaskans and sarloos wolf dogs have much less shedding then northern Inuit or husky’s for example.

I’m 53 and never had a dog so don’t know much. However, my 18 yr old son recently got a Daschhund puppy and it’s just fantastic. It’s totally opened my eyes to dog life, so full of love and fun. It’s now 1 year old and so easy to manage and live with. What a beautiful dog these are 👍
