I visited this shop very recently. They wanted Rs5000 for a custom made daya only, meaning the right hand smaller treble tabla only (wood, skin, straps & dowels, the entire unit). I thought that was totally overpriced given the local competition. I went to a very well known tabla maker who charged me Rs.2000 per right hand tabla. I had 6 made. They are first rate tablas and I wouldn't exaggerate when it comes to sharing this knowledge with all those that respect & play tabla, such as myself. When asked to reduce the price, this shop flatly refused. You can decide to buy from this shop and I'm sure you'll be happy with the quality. But if you're serious about getting the best quality tabla for a reasonable price, then try closing your eyes while hearing the tabla's sound. This shop is not the only maker in Delhi, that I can assure you. If you can buy 2 tablas for the same price as one, and money is important to you, then shop around. I researched 8 different tabla makers in Delhi and learned the entire scheme that's in play these days in terms of quality & pricing. If you're paying more than Rs2000 for a right hand top notch quality tabla, then that's your decision. Regardless of how much you pay for the tabla, if you're an above average tabla player, you already know that within 1-3 months from the time you purchase the tabla, it will need an adjustment, aka kicchi, no matter how good your shop is. If you haven't learned to adjust your tabla yourself, then you'll continue to pay exorbitant prices for these tablas. While I wish everyone well, including this shop, everyone should know that a higher price doesn't equate to a higher quality tabla. Paying anything over Rs2000 for a right hand tabla and maximum Rs3000 for the base drum, i.e., Rs6000 for the whole set, covers, hammer, etc. is a straight rip off. Then there's the offering of a Rs1000 puddi which sounds very good for most, but keep in mind that if it doesn't perfectly fit the wooden diameter, then you're out of luck. Everyone asks about the price for tabla. There's a reason it's not clearly posted in any shop. They not only make custom made tablas for you, but custom made prices. In the end, it's your money. Good luck.
