A detailed research has been done into this painting. The painting was completed in Melbourne, using sketches and information gathered by Longstaff in Clunes. The final works was done in the NGV. The male is Samuel Thomas 75 years a stone mason living in Fitzroy, this is confirmed by Longstaff, he is buried in Swan Hill .The woman is Sarah Martha Dorey 33 a resident of Castlemaine , the infant her daughter Alice both interned in the Box hill Cemetery Melbourne. There is a lot more to this story , its origin and the models than just a simple art work
The woman holding the baby in the painting her name is Sarah Martha Dory and the baby is Mary Dory Sarah and Mary went on and two younger to start quamby cafe in Olinda and then in 1958 was sold and became The cuckoo restaurant
The man in the study is my great great grandfather Samuel Thomas. He was said to have been a stone mason a publican among other things . Our family holds more information . Oddly his grand son went on the big things in Melbourne, Maples Stores with Ben Nathan in retailing. This is a revised note as more accurate information has come to hand
@@christopherjames3986 it's good to know who the gentleman is in the painting I was never told about him I was only told about Sarah and Mary Dory thank you
@@richardstewart7524 I ve contacted the WA Gallery about this perhaps you may wish to also, to perhaps continue to share information and assist the gallery with providence going forward
Mr. Ganambarr, I finally got your catalog, and your work is so detailed and precise that it almost looks like the work of a draftsman. Maybe next you could do technical drawings of helicopters and battleships on bark. You're already partway there. Not exactly traditional, but what the heck...
I just ordered a book of his wonderful bark art. It should be here in a couple of months. No lie. I'm thinking maybe we should go back to pony express and the Hindenburg zeppelin.
So glad I found this video. As a self-learner, which sometimes gets really frustrating, this helped me quite a bit. Everytime I started drawing I had to just "calibrate" my hand for quite a while, and I didn't even notice it was more about the breath than anything else.
OMG I love the way it's painted the color is so exquisite and gives you a good look at how art really is among artists as well as nonartists the way it's displayed is very interesting 🙂👍
enjoyed looking at pictures of his pictures for ever but never felt I ever successfully swam a text associated with them. But (t)his lucid and concise short talk was illuminatingly illuminating,, Very insightful and wise! Thanks!
