I still remember in the final days some madman made ported GBA emulator and doom on those SE phones, and even SNES emulator and NES... those were running great, there must be some russian pages still having those files somewhere.... and JAVA really sucked on mobile phones, when GBA games emulated were running faster than native JAVA ones

I had the same one and used it to work. I could connect to PSTN modem on servers at my clients. I replaced it with a 9210 a 9500 and finally an E90 It's an excellent machine that I regret having sold
So... I've actually spent unbelievable hours looking through the patents for this, and genuinely I can't see exactly what this Transmeta "code morphing" patent is supposed to improve. The first part of the patent describes the breaking down of i386-plus-extensions instructions, into native micro-ops, which can be re-ordered themselves in a secondary instruction buffer. Intel already did this from 486 and onwards, so no idea how that patent was granted. I think it's exactly the same thing, only the Intel and Transmeta microcode / micro instruction set differs completely. The second part is related specifically to Microsoft Windows, and describes parking a large file on the FAT32 partition, to on-the-fly recompile PE32 executables into the Transmeta native instruction set. This part is actually way ahead of its time, and quite clever, although I can't personally see how this was supposed to improve performance. WinPE compilers (from VB and C++ Windows SDKs) were WELL OPTIMISED already for native x86 execution, and trying to re-structure them for better ordering at-runtime was just too brave. Plus it required intrusive Windows drivers to do this, hooking into Win32ExecJumpPE.
It's getting worse, 3G has just been turned off as well. This is causing us problems with emergency service calls and software updates. So all the grey imported phones are going to be blocked here on the 1st of November as the solution.
There is actually an RPG made with grid like the maze game, but on newer phones like m55 s55. still kinda same hardware and the game is very good and for the time its size was huge
I think the exclusion of a Joystick for the D-pad was such a huge miss. The next best phone during this time was Nokia N79 which I had two units. One purchased off of my friend who got bored of it. I remember trying all of the bypass methods, OPDA, HellOx :)
I watched this great video with interest since I'm in possession of two similar units that each have different problems. (Mine are the GV-D300). You are much braver than I in dismantling to the point of disconnecting ribbon cables and mechanical assemblies. Have you ever dealt with the dreaded C:21:00 Dew Sensor (CN3104) problem that won't go away? I followed the suggestions in the service manual about letting the unit adjust to the current temperature. No help there. I'm pretty sure the sensor is bad and is keeping the unit from playing the Mini DV cassettes. But I can't locate the sensor. Is it accessible from the inside where the tape head is located? Or is it on the circuit board (CB61 A) necessitating the removal of all the ribbon cables and the circuit board labeled CB61 B? Any advice would be appreciated.
I've never dealt with this problem. You might be able to see the sensor by looking closely inside the tape mechanism. I would expect the sensor to be inside there, maybe near the heads (this is all just a guess), and look something like this. www.electro-tech-online.com/threads/sony-dtc-700-dat-machine-problem.141643/#post-1187134 I would first try blowing warm dry air into the tape area for a bit. Or start looking for the sensor and cleaning it if you can find it. Failing those I would find the IC that reads the sensor and bypass it with a resistor. I still have my N900 somewhere but the micro-usb is broken off in a way that it damaged the board, if I remember correctly… 😢 It was, and still is, a stunning device! I bought it a few years later. At the time, I was diving down the openmoko rabbit hole. I still have the freerunner and one upgraded version (GTA04 from a small german company). The small company had planned to build hardware upgrades for the N900 as well and it was better suited for that because of its physical keyboard. Later I bought the first commercially available Ubuntu phone. The bq aquaris e4.5. I use it still from time to time as a backup. Thanks for the videos! The solder pads on the board may have been pulled off with the Micro USB connector. A skilled technician can rewire them. But may not be worthwhile today. I'm still glad you kept yours though.
I consider myself a “skilled technician” … kind of… I’ve done this kind of work several times, but something held me back. Maybe it was torn-off solder pads connecting to another layer of the circuit board, or simply not knowing how to secure the connector so it wouldn’t break off again. Maybe I’ll tackle it in the winter. I have two batteries, one of which is „new“. It’s worth a try. Would you be interested in showcasing an Openmoko in a video? I still have working ones with different software. Rather than letting them sit around here, I’d be happy to lend them to you! But no pressure! It was just a spontaneous idea.
You need to tell them the truth about the cloud, the cloud is nothing more than an FTP server that's all it is, and they've used that to charge you money to put your data in their system. FTP servers have been around for decades, It's a bunch of HHD's hard drives collecting information that you give them which they could use against you, if they so desire that you are a threat to national security or your community. So my advice to you new users, that are just now seeing this video, create your own cloud, don't store your private sensitive information on a community server that can be hacked, if they don't have it tightly secured and that can be accessed by the host or anybody else the that matter. Again, Create Your Own Cloud. To protect your own data. Not On The so called, CLOUD. In Other words create your own Back-up.
I agree completely with you. I only do local backups and don't use clouds. I'm not sure how I would approach a video on the topic. But I agree that it's worth doing and I'll be thinking about it.
Hey! Thanks for the interesting video! I used Enlightenment Desktop Environment with illume keyboard module on my openmoko back in 2010. I guess it's no longer supported, but was one of the best on screen keyboards for linux on mobile devices.
I hadn't heard of Enlightenment Desktop Environment, thanks for letting me know. I don't mind if it's not supported. I enjoy retro tech, and that includes trying out retro distros as well on the right devices.
My fave part is how to closer to end it's revealed that about half of the space inside this tiny mofo was empty to fit the full-size PCMCIA card reader, lol
I loved mine I have one coming from Germany to uk I did wish they would do one colour like they redid a Nokia awhile ago also I liked the fact that you could record phone calls so I am still looking for a battery as this one with the phone that’s coming only lasts 15 mins

One interesting way of increasing the range of internal radio network pagers (for fireman for instance) was that the mobile VHF radio in the car at a good position for receiving the signals would be sellcalled and would do an acknowledge response to the base station and then a secondary transmission to the nearby pager inside a building. That way you would have a great range even on the litle VHF Hi pager...😊
Local Pagers are there since the 60's/70's.... Then, they've evolved to city wide and country wide systems. Spys used them all the time because you cannot track it (except for the "acknowledge type" with a return signal). Eurosignal was already in the air at 1974 on VHF midband (arround 83~84 MHz, right bellow FM Broadcast Band) with extended range by use of 2 KW transmitters. Sinal intended for Germany, France and Switzerland could be received all over Europe (including Portugal at the west extreme of Europe)
