how would you make other lead based colors? will they also have that kind of depth and warmth? or coolness?

Hi @KoshNaranick, thank you for your question, you can cook the lead carbonate at high temperatures in a kiln to calcine the substance and turn it into lead oxide or lead dioxide minium or red lead

Thing is... all these steps and the oil still yellows after it has dried. Even if the drying happens with sunlight exposition. Just drip a couple of drops on a piece of toilet paper, let it dry completely until hard, then place it in a cabinet without light for 2 weeks. Then you'll be greeted by really yellow piece of toilet paper. So aside from texture, that might be better with this way of processing, the yellowing is not improved at all.

A late comment here, so I'm not sure if you're even still active on here. When you're washing the lead, you say to wait a month before harvesting the lead. Do you mean to wash it for a month or do you mean let the lead sit in the manure/vinegar for a month?

I did this with Pacheco‘s method of using lavender flower buds and a very high proof of alcohol probably over 151 proof and my oil came out cloudy. I don’t understand why. It did sort of misty rain one or two of the days it was out side. Chicos method says to leave it 15 days out so I left it 15 days in two white bowls in one of those metal pans with a clear plastic cover with holes punched on the top to allow ventilation. I’m not sure what happened or what went wrong but my oil is cloudy. I’ve done this years ago but I don’t remember if the oil resulted being cloudy or not. ( I did sun thicken the oil I made years ago and still have some which is clear. But I don’t know what I may have done wrong this time.) @oscar econome

You can always put it in the freezer until it starts to thicken and get really cloudy. Then filter it through coffee paper while in the freezer (it will take ages) it will come out really clear, because the cloudy bits solidified will be caught in the paper filter. You can also do this if you a really cold winter. Not sure WHAT those cloudy bits are though. I tried soooo many methods of processing linseed oil and aside from it improving drying time, it never really improved yellowing.

Just missing the psyllium husk powder, but the flax oil and the ethanol/alcohol are already waiting. Regarding handling toxic dry pigments: George O'Hanlan from Rublev/NaturalPigments recommended getting a blast cabinet, which is sort of like a glove box for mycology, but sturdier as its made for (you guessed it) sand blasting. With that you could use the mortar and pestle without worrying about the dust. He also recommends getting a yearly lead blood test at your doctor, which should also screen for other heavy metals like cobalt, cadmium, etc.

Have you made & used this lead white? I’ve been making it for a white but it takes FOREVER to mull, and it comes out all thick and gloopy… (Not sharp and light like in the video) (ANNND he (Oscar) says he used sun thickened linseed oil as well??) How the heck can you get it to that consistency with just a muller and slab??
@SnkobArts
@SnkobArts Год назад
@@erxfav3197 i have never made my own stack process as i dont have the resources, but i have made a small amount from loose pigment, as well as tested different types of lead white variations from different companies. I've also pulverized quartz stones, other times egg shells, to make filler pigments. Most of my knowledge about lead white is from reading and working with the paint itself. Also it shouldnt be too difficult to pulverize... It's called flake white for a reason.
@SnkobArts
@SnkobArts Год назад
It's thixoropic properties are one of the main attractions of the pigment because it can be manipulated in certain ways. You can minimize that with aluminum stearate and beeswax i think, but at that point that's like adding sweetnlow to fine red wine... At which point buying a generic cremnintz white is probably a better and safer option.

Honestly a lot to take in, and I love the content of information here- (I am truly taking notes!) but some of it doesn't add up- maybe its minor oversites? You showed a picture of many oil brands under the caption "...industrially made... cheaper to make... tendency to yellow... linseed oil..." and within the picture are five tube of Blue Ridge Oils, which is handmade made of walnut oil, and is a fair bit more expensive and much higher quality, I'd say on par with Old Holland or Michael Harding. Is this a bias? You go on to state that the Alkali Method is how to make vegetable oil into fuel, which if it were that involved, nobody would be ABLE to do it! That is after all, industrial, requiring pressure vats and forced mechanical filtration. I am confused by this information...
@oscareconome3033
@oscareconome3033 Год назад
Hi Chris thank you for the comment, honestly the picture is just something i pulled off of the internet, i use blue ridge oil paints myself! I have no bias agaisnt those brands. About your second question, Vegetable oils are merely an alternative fuel for diesel engines. People would usually be using a crude mineral oil rather than an organic oil. The alkali refining method diagram that I showed seems like an intense process, but there are videos ive seen of people online taking vegetable oil and simply mixing in lye, letting it sit and then pouring it off to then be used as fuel in their diesel engine. I hope i managed to answer your questions, and im glad that you had them! Have you tried making the oil yet?

2 to 3 means 2 parts of egg and 3 parts of linseed oil? Can this medium be made with whole egg or just egg yolk? Using of egg white seems a bit weird to me. Egg white cracks with time, I suppose the large amonut of oil in the mix eliminates this process. Historically egg yolk due to be perfect emulsifier was widely used in painting and to make all kind oil emulsions for painting (tempera grassa).
