I disagree on one point however Even though it is tedious to do to many, if people actually tried writing out a rhyme scheme a punchline or a scheme or writing that has a message in it You actually start to hear and see where artists are going on a song, deadass. When you understand the fundamentals for what’s going on, you have a deeper appreciation for what it is Especially if you then see and hear what these top level artists create. Or lyricists spitting crazy on a track For reaction channels, somebody who has written lyrics before will be perfect for Which I think is a reason reaction channels like MichelleShow, Knox Hill, etc. Will have such great reactions. Because they truly are catching the bars to every level the lines have

It is a great horror episode. Horror needs a certain suspension of disbelief. And I think that reviewing Blink as a doctor who episode and not as a horror episode is what makes you so critical of it. Horror needs stupid premises, stupid characters and stupid monsters to be effective to the majority. Because fear makes us dumber and I mean that literally. So having that bootstraps paradox only works because we need an excuse plot. Having the angels move inconsistently only works because we need the suspension. If you're an enjoyer of horror movies then all of these tropes would stick out like a sore thumb.
@Cynthionic
@Cynthionic 3 месяца назад
What about horror movies that don’t do these tropes? It is possible to make something scary without establish characters as clever then having them make stupid decisions. Its possible to make something scary without having an unsatisfying mystery. Just because most movies are this way doesn’t make it good, right?
@Ohmargod

@@Cynthionic then it just boils down to preference. There's nothing wrong with wanting more from media. When you acquire more knowledge you tend to find things you've enjoyed in the past to not be as enjoyable anymore. If you look at the broader audience then most people simply don't need acquired taste. Just look at pop music, it's still the most popular but it hasn't evolved for ages. On the contrary, it steals more and more from successes of the past. So at the end Blink might be a mediocre Dr Who episode, but it still does what its meant to do. Tell an engaging story that the broader audience can enjoy.

Been too long since I've watched Blink, I only rewatched it once and it didn't stand out to me among most episodes, guess it just isn't for me but I didn't consider it bad either Although it did have the charm of an old horror movie, but I much prefer Midnight and the Library two-parter in terms of the horror aspect Blink was cool for its time but I kinda feel like the perception of media itself was a bit different back then

here's a theory, what if the angles move slower the closer they are to their target idk
@jshap6551
@jshap6551 3 месяца назад
Sally wasn’t “taking” the key. The angles were gifting it to her because they know she’ll be able to unlock the tardis’ power for them to have access to it. The themes are not super prevalent because this episode is mainly trying to introduce a fun idea and then present it in a very entertaining way for the audience. However the biggest theme apart from horror is miss opportunity and making the most of what you’re given. Two main characters get sent back in time and have no way of ever returning and simply have to deal with it. We see them make the most of that life and we learn of their regrets later on.
@Cynthionic
@Cynthionic 3 месяца назад
That’s a good point the angels need to let sally take the key. In the episode the angel that lets her take the key then moves toward her until the camera focuses on it, very clearly trying to kill her. So it doesn’t make sense

i have a couple theories about the angels... someday I'll make a video about this, but yeh, the biggest theory is that the weeping angels are total goofballs, constantly freezing each other and whatnot. Total klutzes. Like, it's helpful to imagine them constantly saying 'oh gee, oh no' every time they get to move.
@Cynthionic

@@Cynthionic these ones also care a lot more about striking gnarly poses than actually killing people. They're obsessed with it. They're intensely vibing. As for the police station angels... the police station has 2 angels outside it and 2 DIFFERENT angels opposite on the church window ledge. I think those goofy silly goofballs didn't realise til rly late that a busy street is a terrible place to go. The church ones disappear coz they are trying to get out of there. Hence why they attack from the back of the building. Your problem is conceiving of this as a horror episode. It's not. It's a goofball comedy. They are sillier than Sontarans. Probably more silly than the Slitheen.

Definitely agree, especially with the point of the side characters all being cardboard. They tried to have us emotionally invested in three different scenarios (Doctor & Ruby / Father & Daughter / Two soldiers) all at once whilst also expecting us to keep up with the overall plot of the episode, this just resulted in me not caring about a single one because it felt far too rushed. I would say that if they chose to really invest more time into the father / daughter relationship the episode would be stronger but unfortunately I found the daughter to be incredibly annoying and a complete plank of wood. But if it had been a little more focused on one particular narrative, the whole episode would work far better.

I disagree. Boom is great episode. The last two epiosodes were missing the darker side of the doctor and boom shows the darker side. Also as someone who struggles with very bad anxiety and panic attacks I find this episode was quite relatable as there was a hidden message of even if it feels impossible you can control your survival instinct (flight/fight/freeze response).

Why should we care if the Doctor gets blown up when he’s got another copy on earth? The bi-generation spoiled the consequences of having to move forward and let go. I don’t see the Doctor with Gatwa’s performance as he’s way too emotional and more emotional than the companion! When the fourth Doctor stepped on a landmine he showed great resilience and concern for his companions whereas here Gatwa’s crying several times. I’m not against a black actor playing the Doctor but for me Adrian Lester would have been a stronger choice. The episode was ok but not great. Interesting review.
@Unethical.Dodgson
@Unethical.Dodgson 4 месяца назад
Adrian Lester is not a bad pick. Having said that. This was among the top 10 worst episodes I've seen of new who. Worse than the Power of Three. This episode went nowhere, had no real message, had companions behaving like assholes (Especially the 'new' upcoming companion), everyone running around an active minefield, a girl mistaking an AI for her actual father, the Doctor not at all using creativity to get out of a situation that he's known for thinking his way out of, and just overall having had no damn point. It started off with some promise but it basically went nowhere, did nothing, said nothing of value, and didn't even do THAT well enough. (By the end of the episode, the very premise is called into question and makes even less sense, too. Not to mention it's an episode structure done before but competently. Unlike this one which was hastily thrown together by Moffat.)
@EliTripps
@EliTripps 4 месяца назад
Your very first issue is that the doctor didn't have a way of the situation. Yeah, life is like that. Sometimes no matter how smart or strong you are, it isn't enough. But in the end it was his Love that even the AI couldn't deny, ala "would you like to play a game?".
@Unethical.Dodgson
@Unethical.Dodgson 4 месяца назад
That is ridiculous. Never mind the fact that everyone is just casually running around in an active minefield like they are sure that was the only mine, the fact that he could sweat, cry, lose his marbles etc. and not set the mine off. He could just jump off it, no doubt. This is one of those situations that would have been resolved with actual thought in the hands of a good writer. Instead, we got an entire episode of the doctor crying and people running around in an active minefield.

@cyberslink1320
@cyberslink1320 4 месяца назад
Slow to act? A bit nervous? Yeah, I have no idea why you thought Ruby was any of that. You need to rewatch the episodes, my friend. From the very beginning, she was portrayed as a brave young girl willing to do anything for the sake of others, mostly babies so far. She alone climbed on the flying ship to save the baby from the goblins. When she thought the baby was abducted by the boogie man she immediately asked the Doctore "Ok, if we make noise maybe it will leave the baby alone and come to us, right?" and immediately grab a tube and started making noise all by herself, she didn't even wait for the doctor. In "The Devil's Chord" when trying to enter the music studio, it was she who took the initiative and told someone of the staff that they were there replacement. That was super cool, usually is the doctor that takes care of things like that with his psychic paper. Just because she was a little hesitant when asking for a favor she was insecure? or because she tried to comfort literal babies because they were scared you assumed she was timid? I am sorry but what? How do you even come to that conclusion? And for the rest of why you don't like the episode, "The episode is basically all tell no show and I don't like it" - I mean, that's just personal preference. People like it *because* it was all tell and no show. It is the best acting we have seen from Ncuti. He is basically trapped with no magic wand and no magic box and without the ability to even move. All he has is his cleverness and the power of his words to get out of this and we love to see how his mind works. Who cares if we didn't see a battle with flashy lights and monsters, this is far more interesting. "The doctor gave out exposition that didn't end up solving anything" - What you mean? The surrender was declared and, are you mad because the episode didn't end the way you expected? Do you know what a twist is? The twist was that the power of love saved the day, that's it. It's supposed to touch your heart or whatever but I think it flew over your head, no offense. And the A.I. didn't have a part of the deceased soul btw, it was an A.I. created with the mind of the dead. The A.I. is a copy of the memories of the dad. It was thanks to that and his human will that allowed him to hack into the algorithm and declared the surrender himself. "The father and the daughter had zero caraterisation" - Bro, really? What do you mean with that? The characterization was very quick but very clear. It accomplish what they try to do, make you feel for this family that was tragically separated by a pointles war. That you didn't feel anything with that is more of a you problem. I don't know what else you expect specially for characters from a single episode that we are never going to see again. "The worst part is the two characters. The man that likes her and the girls that doesn't knows he likes her" - Again my dude. I think that is a you problem and because you didn't understand the theme of the episode. It is not just "capitalism is bad", the theme of the episode is the power of love and faith can accomplish anything and that not even an capitalist distopia can change that. She never saw the love he had for her and that is tragic and that is something. It was the best episode in like 7 years because it was a bottle episode, no monster needed, no flashy lights, no big special effects. The best characterisation of the Doctore in like forever, we saw him cry, laugh, be mad, scared, we saw his compassion and his cold thinking and many other things. It was great.

As far as you’re arguments for the other characters characterization, yeah no… they are all card board cutouts with zero characterization which is not a problem with them getting too little screen time.
