Welcome to Wild Touring. I'm Cam. I live in Western Australia. This channel features family caravan travels with my wife and two kids, as well as solo trips, tinny missions, 4x4ing and fishing. In 2025 we are hitting the road and 'doing the lap' around Australia!
Gday Cam, 3 days GCR, then across Finke into Mt Dare, then 2 days Madigan Line. Induction gave up the ghost. How old was it??? But I've read a lot of the comments about powering the car for induction, including Harry 😂. What everyone is forgetting is. What else can you run. I have a Microwave, Airfryer, Sandwich Toaster, Coffee Machine. Small price, when you can camp 5 star offgrid... Cheers, Mark...
Gday guys, how do you find these work as a decided freezer? Do they actually get down to -16, even on the hotter days and keep ice cream nice and hard? I've always had issues with our fridges in them not getting as cold as what they advertise.
Toyota will use Valve Guide Seals that can handle the heat. BMW can't but that shouldn't surprise anyone. I bet you dont know it's just a V8 with 2 Pots chopped off. Ok it has Steel Pistons but the Bore & Stroke are identical. Has 6 Bolt Mains and should be Tonka tough
Hi Cam I’ve been trying the air fryer to make chips & heat food at camp and I found it fantastic, I know you also use one , would be interesting to do a segment on that
Good choice guys cant wait for our vx to arrive. We went with the lovells gvm upgrade from WA supension and it going to 3800 ,plus gcm 7300 with 50 mm lift .
As Harry said, you need to spend $5k plus on your battery electric set up to run induction cooking. Then, chase the sun or use a generator to keep the batteries full.
I have the same K mart induction cooker and I also get the same error when I'm using my cast iron pan on it. However I started using a regular pan specifically when I'm using induction and I haven't had a problem since... Definitely agree with the power statement we like to move around a lot so it hasn't been an issue but any more than a few days id be in trouble. Still I love not carrying any gas !
the E5 code is a problem I thought it was happening because the pan size was to big so tried one the correct size & it still happened so I took it back & got my money I have now bought a better one & hope it doesn't give the same code but haven't used it yet but it sounds like it will
Hey Cam and @mozfog, just tried to get one then, and it looks like they're not selling any repellent with them, or the extra bottles? They only have 1 product on their website so I can't use the code. Any ideas?
I don’t like cooking inside the van unless the weather is inclement. I like to use our induction cooktop (Germania??) outside of the van because it doesn’t matter if it is windy. Otherwise our little gas cooker is great too of it isn’t windy. Fire is amazing but I haven’t ever really cooked on it.
Good to see you honestly review a product. True, you need to spend a few grand to get a battery system to power induction, but sometimes camping is best kept simple 😉 For most, a cheap set up means a cheap power base, so gas or fire is best. It must be really windy in WA, cos in the east, we've never really had an issue with wind and gas blowing out 🤷🏻♂️
Just finished watching the series on this miserable weekend on the east coast Awesome collab guys really enjoyed it and that private beach property doesn’t get much better 👍
Cam don’t judge induction temperature control ability based on portable units. A high quality home induction system has massively better temperature control than gas. That’s not an opinion, it’s a fact. Ive had both at home and induction is miles ahead.
I have the same Anko one and find it restrictive around 1600 W. Above that power level it almost always throws an error and stops working. My setting however, is purely domestic suburban. That cooker was bought to replace a better one that was destroyed by my brother-in-law who overfilled the kettle and when it boiled over, the electrics were drenched. I'm not sure why I still have the thing, two weeks after the drenching of the old unit my ceramic cooktop was replaced by a 4-element induction hob. I was using a single induction device because 2 of the 4 elements in the ceramic cooktop had failed. The previous single induction cooker (the drowned one) was able to work at its full power setting of 2000 W without the overheat error. It cost more than the $52 of the Anko unit.
Something I learned from working in engineering is to plan for redundancy by having backup for or duplicate anything you rely on. There are more than one way to cook and generate power while camping: fire (to fork?), gas burners or bbq, 240v hotplate, 240v induction hotplate, 240v air fryer, 240v electric frypan/rice cooker/pressure cooker. There are different energy supplies: gas, batteries, 240v/12v/solar charging, solar or petrol generator, firewood. I diversify my energy source and power generation so I switch to suit conditions. I have a caravan with 2 x 120ah old school AGM batteries for 12v power lighting, water pump and water heater, gas for internal and bbq cooking and off grid 3 way fridge, portable solar panels, Bluetti AC200p 2kva solar generator and 3.5 kva petrol generator for off grid 240v power. I've camped for months off grid and if you have solar, petrol, firewood and chainsaw, solar, batteries and generator nothing's a problem. Be prepared and be flexible. Don't adhere to one way of doing things. Electric Jesus is a fantasy. Cover all bases. Haven't needed an induction cooktop yet but I think it's useful if you have enough 240v power.
@@WildTouring Yes. There's a case for and a need for diversified energy sources and cooking methods. Two years ago I went to Carnarvon Gorge Qld for a week after wet weather and had to use a combination of solar panels, an Arkpac with 120ah AGM battery, Bluetti AC200P solar generator, 3.5kva petrol genie and fire cooking. Then I went to SA for 2 months and only need to run the genie for 1 day to recharge the caravan batteries and the Bluetti. So needs change depending on the weather, sunshine, cold and cooking. Be prepared. Prepare for everything, camp comfortably.
Hey buddy love your show so good 🎉 I was thinking the boats name should be Wild Water. Only because you could have a number of different themes but keep the Wild. I’m really disappointed you don’t have Cam Wild Wild CAMping 😂. Or Cam Wild Wild Storage 🤣👍
Another thing that pisses me off with induction is how small the “burner” is. With a cast iron skillet the heat does not spread properly and only the middle heats up. Terrible. But yeah agree it works great for quick meals or cooking mediums with liquid like boiling pasta, stewing or deep frying. I have a gas range at home but use induction at home for those things and it works a treat. My setup 200ah lithium and 50A dcdc charger is more than capable for running it in touring style trips. But I’ve gone back to butane canisters as 2kg gas bottles are annoying to store in a wagon, really hard to find anyone that refills. It’s also almost the same price to refill as a 9kg bottle fil. Then if you’ve got a 1/4 left but need a bit for a trip they’ll still charge the full 2kg price. Swap and goes don’t even carry that style of gas bottle either. I’ve had to jerry rig up a hose to refill my own cylinders from the 9kg bottles though as you can’t beat lpg in the cold, especially camping up in the NSW/vic alpine regions
No. You need a 1500W minimum inverter. And then you still can't use the cooker on its most powerful settings (1600,1800,2000w) and if you have a 100ah battery, it might not have a high enough continuous amp output rating for a 1500w inverter. Would recommend 200ah lithium battery minimum with at least 150 amp continuous output. I do most my cooking on 1000w and 1200w induction settings too btw.
hey Cam, i normally use gas and want to go induction for camping, i think i might try this now. also, we converted our house from gas to induction for cooking also got rid of the gas hot water, saved so much money and honestly induction (good induction) i think is better.
After watching numbers of your vids , we purchased one after getting our new van. It comes on a padded bag. I must say it's awesome, only issue can be too quick boiling things, so we are now learning what settings are the go. Thanks for the info you give in your vids.
Great video 👍don't build a new house in Victoria their government has banned gas there most likely the rules will change when that stupid government gets voted out we hope
Totally disagree on gas in your house. Banned in Eastern States now for new builds. Decent induction is so good. Ours is fabulous, great temperature control and quick.
Banned in eastern states? Pretty sure QLD still allow it as I cannot find anything about a ban other than the relevant minister saying they wouldn’t do it.
I would love to run one of the induction cookers for wind and altitude. I just don't have the money for the power needed. I live around the same altitude as the highest point in AUS. Going camping, usually about 10 to 11k ft. The best solution I've found is an old coleman white liquid gas stove that you can pump to whatever preasure is needed. It burns like a hot as hell jet engin and, It's never let me down. Cheers, Cam!🎉
I run an induction cooker using a 120amp/hr lithium battery 3000 watt inverter and a 40amp DCDC charger. The whole setup including an induction cooker for 850 AUD. All Kings brand and has been cooking for Me for years. You don’t need a big system or expensive system. I use this running a fridge, lights toaster kettle and induction cooker. In summer We take a pedestal fan .
Thanks Cam great video, we actually do a lot of induction cooking in our van as we prefer to cook outside and we can just use the kmart one on a fold down table, we don't usually camp more then about 3 nights in one place so generally battery power isn't an issue, we also use gas usually with a BabyQ. Also looking at setting up the car for induction cooking 👌
Good Video Cam I have to say I’m with Harry on the jetboil basecamp stove they are great for cooking out of the car and when I’m off on a tinny mission I can throw it in the boat which I’m sure you have a few coming up.
Yeah! 😆 I wanted a freezer for the longer trips I do and couldn’t justify the price of other brands for something I realistically only need a couple of times a year. This was $200! 😱
@@WildTouring yeah i did the same. Bought a 45ltr Oztrail 4 years ago to put in the back to use as a freezer on big trips. Still going strong. Use it at home now as a overflow freezer 👍
Butane stoves are awesome. Cans last a long time and burn hot and temperature control is awesome. The only problem is they dont work in winter when it's cold. I use gas. Easy, cheap, great temperature control, and doesn't require a $3000 12v system. Stick with gas. No point reinventing the wheel. If I have time I also like to cook on the fire. Induction makes no sense to me at all while camping.
Excellent points, however; I've used gas ever since I was a young fella, initially propane but it's bulky, so switched to butane as compact and light. Cool temps were always an issue, breeze could be partially controlled by wind deflector BUT what pushed me over the edge into induction was a week's stay on east coast of K'gari, breeze wind was continuous, evenings and mornings cool enough to freeze canisters, it was just a pain in the arse. Purchased a induction cooktop, no issues quick cookups in any conditions, unplug, let it cool, wipe clean and place back in draw. Having said that I still carry butane for long slow cookups and to utilise our aluminium pressure cooker to achieve lovely tender meats. Expense doesn't have to be outrageous either. Our initial system was: Existing AGM batteries. They worked fine, used them for our coffee M/C, sandwich press, toaster but induction cooktop pounded them, they were too slow to recover for continuous use throughout the day into the night for lighting. Our system now contains: 3 x Itech lithium drop in replacements, far quicker to recharge @ $1300 on sale. Our initial electrical: King's 1500w inverter, $199. Autobarn jumper leads $10. Add to that our Germanica induction cooktop $50 from Coles. So expense that works fine 1300 199 10 50 $1559 Today the Germanica units used at home and 2 X ALDI $50 units occupy the same space, more compact. They are not as efficient as the Germanica but utilise one on inverter only, and two when in van parks off of shore power. Still Cary the trusty butane unit.
@@ianweal3081 $1500 expense to run 1 stove top?? No thanks. I understand theres a big push at the moment to go this way, but when a 2 burner stove and 2kg gas bottle can do the same (better) job for a fraction of the price. I'll be sticking with that for now.
Yes, that's okay but you have the bulk of it to transport, time to set up, time to pack away, yes been there done that. In comparison I pull out a 350 X 280 X 45 mm stove, plug in, cook eat, wipe down and re-stow in draw. Considering I'd already developed my electrical system to run coffee M/C, lighting etc the expenditure had already occured, but to run the induction cook top I preferred to update to lithium for restoration of power, could have possibly made do on AGM but I doubt it. My point was, you don't need to spend thousands as consistently pushed on RU-vid channels. Who'd thought a Kings 1500w inverter would perform so well, I've attempted to update to supposedly better 2000w inverter and it struggles to run coffee M/C. Hence Kings 1500 reinstall.
I personally think the induction crap is just a scam , when I first went camping as a kid we used the fire and I still use the fire today (I’m 62). To me coffee machines , induction cookers , air fryers , etc are robbing you of the camping experience ( same with starlink). It’s great for RU-vidrs starved for content to do shows about and electrical manufacturers to sell you a $6000 dollar lithium set up . I noticed Ian states the time it takes to use the induction is minimal , what’s the big rush for Ian ? I never rush while I’m camping ……isn’t that why you camp ? No stress no deadlines , relax……..P.S. I live in Victoria where you can cook over a fire year round (except total fire bans) .
Thats what i was thinking now that i have a quality lithium battery set up, day trip to the beach id use induction or an air fryer for a quick knock up lunch, but gas if i was setup at camp and it wasnt blowing its tits off ahahaha
Oddly we have never had s problem getting a gas cooker going even in very cold weather. We generally use big gas cylinders though so maybe that makes a difference.
It's butane that has the issue, not propane. Larger bottle usually indicates you're using propane. Butane gas units simply cease to work, remove canister, it's cold, replace with another canister, within 3 minutes you'll have zero flame heat again. Propane just continues to burn, usually a hotter flame also. Butane benefit is primarily they are compact & light and ideal above 10°C, useless in wind though.
