I could be wrong, but I think there was a wider release in the UK. It’s difficult to find any physical copies of this film in North America including VHS copies.
@@ZombeeJohnny as odd as that may seem (uk didn't usually get anywhere near as much niche stuff as usa) you may be right. I first saw mutronics at a VHS rental shop but it was shown on tv multiple times
The RU-vid version of Guyver 89' is taken from the DVD release which replaced some of the original voice actors. Enyme/Genzo Makashima"s new voice is horrible. He sounds like a bug. Watch the original VHS release. Enzymes voice is TERRIFYING

The Guyver is one of my favorite franchises. Too bad that it seems like the manga is pretty much doomed. I would have liked to see an ending to it or something. Is it possible for the creator to just sell it to someone else, and that dude can just keep it going or finish it?

I love the original anime series of the Guyver, (the body horror transformation of Genzo makashima looking back when he becomes Enyzme is fucking terrifying and well animated!) i still have all the VHS up in my loft. did spent a bit of a pretty penny to get the Viz graphic novels a couple years back, but i own those also. like many great artists you get to see Takaya's art progression from looking quite cartoonish at the start to in the later years to quite fine art before the arc closes. (i never watched the films, but need to at some point) i do believe this series definitely ended well on the original 12 episodes, as reading the later manga series it just becomes plagued with unnecessary characters, Aptom endlessly respawning into a bigger freak and more dialogue heavy. I think Takaya himself probably got to a point not knowing how he would know how to properly end the series given its gone on so long. that said, it seems cursed on all routes. both of the anime series cutting short, the translated manga only going up to certain time and then him leaving it on a hiatus. I sampled parts of the original soundtrack for my music project, as the music that is in the original series is pretty special too
@@keironhiggspoet Sounds like you have yourself a great collection! I wouldn’t mind owning the VIZ copies! Even just volume 1! But they are so expensive now a days. I also feel that the series was doomed when it kept being bounced around by publishers. I can only imagine that would be disheartening and cause Takaya to lose motivation.
@@ZombeeJohnny I was very lucky as i found two of them when comic book stores stocked them in the UK in the early 2000s. the others were very hard to come by on the net. I'm glad some people love Guyver as much as myself, as i figured it always inspired the mid 90s version of the Tekkaman Blade (aka. Tekno man in the US) anime in style and format also.

Excellent explanation. Thank you for not butchering the character names too. The pronoucations in the 2005 version makes me violent. The characters are bland and soulless compared to the OVA. It still pains me that it ended at episode 12. I remember seeking out the next episode in my local Blockbuster to find out there weren't any more.

The reason your Guyver 2 looks "bootlegged" is because its a Warner Archive release. Literally those are all print-on-demand so they all look like burned DVD-Rs (because essentially, they are).
I remember discovering Guyver through the film adaptations. For me, they put a lot of effort into fight choreography in the second one. I'm surprised there was never a Japanese live action.

I personally have been a long time Guyver fan since dark hero. the only way that I see the Guyver franchise and story getting finished is in film that’s it. One of these days I hope Viz or some other manga company will re-release the manga in English.. I also have a tendency to believe the reason why the Guyver Monga is on hiatus and I think permanently canceled is because the creator went back to his original profession as a dentist probably because that pays the bills. Compared to being a comic book, artist and writer.
If that whole thing about Takaya becoming a dentist is true, then I hope someone approach him purchasing the IP because it's too cool with so much potential to let it collect dust.
If that is true about the author changing careers, its quite shocking, something that had so many movie adaptations, copies of the original run sold, anime adaptations, why he would change professions.. He is the author of a manga well known around the world. Making a modern day anime series or getting one of the many english publishers to pick up and translate his run, publishers in the west would fight over him, manga is pretty popular at the moment. Having the whole up to date guyver volumes translated and released, i know people who would straight up pre order all the volumes. So strange... There are even decent game studios that would salivate to make a Guyver game, the story premise is perfect for it. I wonder if Guyver is stuck in some legal loop hole for adaptations. I know the guy who wrote Gantz has been fighting a studio that has the rights to make Gantz adaptations for years. The author said the reason we haven't had a new Gantz adaptation in the works is because of some studio hogging the rights. Wonder if Guyver is in the same boat. So wierd the author would just drop a story he clearly was passionate for until the mid 2010s, he certainly has a major fan base in the west still, even though there hasnt been a guyver adaptation released in many years. Being a youtuber, you should see if you could get an interview with the author. That would be boss.
@@kernsanders3973 You know I wonder if the Guyver franchise is locked up because Takaya doesn’t want to hand over the rights anymore. It could also be the fact that he isn’t offered anything anymore either. Unfortunately he keeps pretty quiet and tho I would like to try and get an interview with him it might be a pipe dream. I feel like I’m too small of a creator to draw that kind of attention!
Really enjoyed your deep dive on the Guyver!!! Watched the OVA, 89 anime, 06 remake and owned both live action movies from old collectors DVD set containing both movies. I alwayed LOVED the design for Guyver Unit 3. So Kick AS!!!! My 2nd favorite series is, TEKKAMAN BLADE!!! The 2nd series released in 1992 was SO AWESOME!!!!! Also LOVED the 2nd liveaction movie more than the first!!😂

The thing about some series like the guyver 89 (or ninja scroll or wicked city or...) is that if it was one of the first anime series you watched at the time then you will never forget them.
This is the truth. The very first anime film I watched was Vampire Hunter D directed by the man I mentioned in the review Toyoo Ashida. Still enjoy it and watch it to this day! Ninja Scroll was my second and it's the exact same case with that movie! Yoshiaki Kawajiri is an anime god!
Screaming Mad George was brought on to Guyver Live Action movie by the producers to help make a lighter movie to try to compete with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(Crazy Idea, I know). Steve Wang is the original Director who gave a shit about the series.
Well you can tell there is some conflicting ideas with the film. From goofy monsters spouting rap, Zany cartoon sound effects, hideous transformations and the Guvyer fighting giant demons!
Finally someone else talking about the Guyver, although it's sad to hear that the rumor of the author being a dentist again is all anyone seems to know. P.s. listening to power rangers opening themes while ready made the story so fun for me while reading, try it.
You know I had someone say that the Guyver is just violent Power Rangers! It makes total sense listening to listen to the Power Rangers music while reading violent Power Rangers!

I'm am so fed up with people using parasitic and symbiotic interchangeably. They are not interchangeable. Parasitic causes harm to the host and eventually kill the host organism. Symbiotic is a give and take relationship that benefits both organisms. Leeches are parasitic. Remorey and sharks are symbiotic. The Guyver is a parasitic viral bioweapon. It takes over the host and removing the control metal allows the virus to devour the host. This virus gives the host superpowers, but that was genetically engineered into the RNA.
Well to be honest we still don't really know what the Guyver is and what it's full range of capabilities are. You very well could be right! It could be a parasitic organism!
I bumped into The Guyver by chance at a local 16,000 Movies movie rental store ages ago. I was entering my anime phase as a young boy and had already watched a ton of stuff the store had - except one interesting "Techno Man" looking thing, which was the 89 English dub. It was rated "mature" but my folks were cool with it for the most part, so long as I didn't watch the crazy gory parts - which I did lol. The Japanese intro song had me hooked from the start. The overall design and story were amazing to me, and the gory fights and such were perfect for my young, punk-ass self. Needless to say I was a fan from day one, and raided my local comic book shop weekly for new manga issues and models to build. I would later get involved with a bunch of other punk-ass dudes who also loved it and knew everything about it. And those were damn good times. Both movies were "great" to me, if for no other reason than the amazing suit/creature designs. I would have liked a deeper story, but You don't need much of a story when all you're concerned about is radical ancient-alien weaponry, monsters, and fountains of blood all over the place...oh, and that one chick, I guess lol. Though, looking back at the first movie, they really did butcher a lot of it. I understand the curse of PG-13, and that's why I try to avoid it since it usually means mediocre writing and bland characters. And while that's true of the first movie, you can't argue with the creature details and suit designs. Plus the head of Chronos was hilarious. And let's not forget about The Guyver Rap scene, which while cringe was also amazing in its own right. I had no idea the giant bat guy was the same dude from Good Times. DYN-O-MITE! Thanks for this. I've missed this series for some time and finding anything that can fill the gap is impossible. And congrats for having a fiance who is willing to sit through Dark Hero. That's a keeper.
