My favourite version of Tempted is with Glenn Tilbrook singing and playing Piano with Chris Difford on Guitar on the programe Songbook.

I never realised that the rhythm of this song is very "sly and the family stoneish".

Paul Carrack does a good job, but I wouldn't say that the result vindicates the decision. The second verse lines that Tilbrook sings demonstrate that it would have worked just fine with him as lead throughout. Indeed, when I replay the song in my mind it's Tilbrook's voice I hear.

Magnificent! As a non-musician with nominal instruction. (6 years of Cello from 6-12 years old) I now dabble in singing and songwriting, I really appreciate the breakdown of this song. It’s one of my all time favorites.

Great analysis. Regarding the gated reverb comment, it was only discovered around the time this album was being recorded so it hadn't taken over yet.

15:45 Suzanne Vega built pretty much all of Tom's Diner off of this melody fragment.

Thanks for the breakdown of this amazing song. I remember the time I tried to play along with my guitar and immediately realized it was not a “normal” progression. Haha. I’m now, many years later, finally learning it!

Wow, not surprised to hear Dave Dicenso is playing here - he is my favourite drummer in the world! Just awesome talent, incredible chops, great choices and dynamics - the complete player. Also, great playing from the others, as you'd expect!

Never underestimate the value of competition... If Glenn Tilbrook hadn't been champing at the bit to sing (probably) his best song this incredible Paul Carrack vocal might never have existed..

As soon as Carrack sings my spine begins to tingle & it doesn't let up until he quits... I imagine that is something of what fuelled Senor Costello in his - clearly correct - choice for lead & tho I love Tilbrook's version too.... Carrack is otherworldly it's sooo awesome..

Did Carrack come in too early and Costello left it in because it was funny?

This used to be my favorite Queen song until The Miracle got rereleased in 2022, the second disc contains a quick acoustic song sung by Brian known as "You Know You Belong to Me". I still love "Long Away" though.
