I have watched this at least 10 times. As a lifelong Queen fanboy, its lovely to see professional musicians appreciate the lesser known tracks of Queen. Great work Rob. Very great work. Thank you.
I never understood why “Long Away” didn’t become one of Queen’s biggest hit singles. It’s a near perfect “Top 40 Radio” kind of song, and it might be the best “pop” song Queen ever recorded. It perfectly encapsulates their signature sound, and even though Freddie didn’t sing lead, he can be heard prominently in the beautiful harmonies. It should have been the immediate follow-up to “Somebody to Love”, it might well have gone huge in the way it deserved to…
You could dedicate an entire channel to the production techniques and songwriting talents of Queen. Those early records are gifts that keep on giving. Thanks for posting this!
This used to be my favorite Queen song until The Miracle got rereleased in 2022, the second disc contains a quick acoustic song sung by Brian known as "You Know You Belong to Me". I still love "Long Away" though.
Top notch music education from Rob as always! Takes me back to classes at Jim Stinnett’s bassworkouts where Rob handed out his transcriptions for us to play and analyze in class. Incredible lessons from an incredible player!
"The only release they ever had that didn't have Freddie Mercury singing lead?" Um. There are quite a few. Even if you only count ones they released as singles and Freddie didn't sing lead on even during live performances there are some. "I'm In Love With My Car" immediately comes to mind. (A personal favorite is Brian's "'39", though Freddie did sing lead on that live.) Very interesting musical breakdown, but that seems an obvious thing to overlook ;)
