My family has ties to both the Bay and the Desert and I do the trip several times a year, and I just cannot wait for HSR to be a thing. The drive on I-5 is boring at best and miserable at it's worst, and flying doesn't save you time unless you're rich enough to fly direct to SJC/ONT/SNA/PSP etc. Especially if they add an intermediary stop in Palo Alto, I am totally loving the idea of just taking a bus to my local transit center and then getting on a train directly to LA, without any of the restrictions or drama of the airport.
If you do it again, the smarter way from the Embarcadero Station is to take BART to the Coliseum station, and switch to Amtrak there. The other BART station with a direct connection to Amtrak is the Richmond station (more useful if you're going north or east).
Native Oaklander here who's also a boomer. Love trains but never took one to LA. During my college days we would drive up and down the coast as it was just fun and faster. Or we would take a $19 flight. Thanks for taking me along your ride. 😄
I’ve taken Amtrak a few times and I definitely found their ticketing system Strange. Seems so outdated, and the fact that you mentioned that you firmly believe there were people on the train without tickets, only reinforces my experience.

YOu are a braver soul than I, Adam. I used to love taking Caltrain from san Jose to San Francisco, but I don't think my back could handle the trip to LA. I think I have PTSD from all the car trips down the I-5. You've done it for all of us chickensh-s. Thank you, sir.
good luck sacramento, your about to get the fisher pineapple in the ass for a while. Nobody I know is driving to Sac they will have to build a new fan base out of Sac folks, most will be coming to root for the teams the a's are playing is my guess. Cheap way to see the Yankees. Wait it wont be cheap anymore with fisher, expect prices to double.
As a lifelong Sacramento resident, the A’s will not be a novelty. GURANTEED. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the A’s become the Sacramento A’s after their 3rd year here. Sac is fanatical about the kings and this is a baseball first town. I probably won’t be attending any games because right now I am stil heartbroken over what’s happened to Oakland. But I have zero doubt in my head that baseball will be the number 1 hit for the next 3 years.
Omg, people complain about the raise of homeless people and drug addicts and the city is doing something about it and here comes a dude containing that people can't put up tents on the streets. The city is not designed to host homeless people and tweekers in their streets.
hey adam, if capacity is so important to you, why don't you throw in with jerry jones and build a 10 miilion seat stadium? how many of those mid-capacity stadiums come close to a sell out for anything other than a world series game? you have a daytime game, you are guaranteed less than 25% capacity. why play a daytime game? games are played at night. you, when people can stream a game, or watch it on some antique thing called television. why even to the stadium and put yourself in some turfwar situation? capacity important to you adam? really? you ever post videos on the internet adam? really?
me and my brother just got back and it was great! we had a great time. we stayed near the wharf -great food ,great fun, ferry ride, cable car ride china town etc. we did research and a positive attitude.
Cool video. Hopping a northbound train out of west colton to ride the coast line was always a goal of mine when they still ran those trains. Never happened. Bummer.
That's why I worry about HSR ridership. I used the train in Korea (and Europe) and it connected well to other public transportation. Just don't see that many people wanting to connect multiple times to public transit in the US on a long trip.
A lot of what is being blamed on crime and homelessness (while a factor) I think is more attributable to the changes in our shopping habits post covid. This as well as the fact that malls were dying well before that.. an unfortunate sight though.
Really enjoy your content Adam, you don’t engage in stupid political rhetoric etc., and just show the beauty and vices of a city, the Amtrak trains etc. You’re a good documentarian!
Lots of hateful and triggered conservatives here who are very Knowledgeable on the causes and solutions for homelessness (just kidding, yall are pathetic and full of complaints, yet no solutions). Btw, Moving homeless encampments doesn’t solve shit, it just moves it. Let’s actually advocate for SOLUTIONS instead of gleefully taking away the few dignities homeless people try to hold on to with no alternative (housing, food stamps, temporary shelter etc) Do better ya fuckin assholes, homeless people are not all crooks and drug addicts, and if they are, they still deserve help
This is absolutely idiotic. If they're gonna move permanently to Vegas, why not play at Las Vegas Ballpark for the next three seasons while the new stadium is being constructed? It's way more important to start building a loyal fan base there. What good does being in Sactown do?? 🤦
