This is the most dangerous square mile in America according to national and international news. So I made up a food tour of the neighborhood and visited myself to see what it's really like.

Oakland is an anomaly. If you have enough money to live in the nicer parts, it can be a slice of paradise away from the city. I left SF for the Oakland hills back in 2020 and never looked back. It has everything you need and is in such convenient location distance wise to the entire Bay Area. I love me some In-N-Out, but the people who swear by In-N-Out, Whataburger and Shake Shack haven’t explored the full spectrum of what a truly great burger tastes like. I’d take a Super Duper Burger any day over those three. Keep up with the videos. I really enjoy your different perspectives on these places you visit.

Only problem w/ Oakland hills is that you have to get through East or West Oakland to get there from SF!!!!!:/:/

I lived in the Bay Area for 15 years; the only time I got robbed was in Oakland around 2010, near Jack London Square. Never went back after that and moved away a few years ago. I'm so glad I don't live in that mess of an area anymore.

Jack London feels relatively safe these days. It’s certainly safe compared to Hegenberger road.

I don't live in Oakland, but I have been to Jack London Square and its waterfront, and I feel that it's one of the more safer areas of the city. In fact, as of this writing, I went to Jack London Square last week & felt quite safe.

I went to that Raising Cane's about a year ago and couldn't believe how bad that area was. I've spent plenty of time in Oakland and it never seemed as bad as people made it out to be but that section was incredibly sketchy.

The case that the A's and Fisher make about, "We can't make it in Oakland," rings true, unfortunately, when seeing this. This is a dam shame. I am familiar with this area from when we attended A's games from Modesto. When coming from Sacramento, we don't see this area, not that it is any safer. Why can't politicians just get things DONE! Is it that there is so much red tape? The issue is too far gone, and everyone just has a "f**k it, it is what it is!" Man.

There's so much that is so frustrating about this. It's why I thought doing a food tour might lighten the mood a bit. It's tough not to feel some understanding of Fisher wanting out of Oakland. Especially considering he's politically on the other end of the spectrum. At the same time, investment into sports teams has helped revitalize neighborhoods in places like Detroit, and Philly. But Fisher hasn't tried to do any of that in Oakland.

when i first moved to the bay i used to go to that walmart every month to get discount prescriptions because i didn't have insurance. at the time it was sketchy but fine. sad to see it decline.

It sounds like the other walmart I mentioned is now going to close too

For the nearly 10 years I've lived in Oakland, I've never thought about visiting hegen-burgers 😂 When I first moved to Oakland in 2014 I thought I wanted to be buried in Oakland. With the rising crime, the influx of camper vans and homeless, and the city politics is making me rethink that decision. For the prices we pay in rent you would think this city is better ran, but it not. Oakland is being divested from and out troubling.

This perfectly captures what so many of us are feeling right now. And Hegenburger is for sure the best place I went to this day!

In the late 1980’s and 1990’s, my sons and I went to several A’s games a year. We only only got out of the car in the parking lot or the BART station to walk game. We never stopped anywhere else in Oakland just to be on the safe side. Looks like it’s gotten much worse. Too bad a thriving business district did not develop around the Coliseum.
@AdamDoesNotExist

To be fair, this is about as bad as it gets in Oakland. It's just too far to walk to from the coliseum unfortunately

Still live in Oakland, this is a nostalgic video. I still miss that old Walmart and now that in and out is closing I no longer have a reason to go by that area:(

Another great informative video😉👍💯 That part of Oakland has always seemed to be one of the more wild areas. But of course I don't live in Oakland and rarely go there.

Thank you! I just spent some time in the tenderloin, and I’m probably going to make a video about it. I would absolutely rather go back to the TL (and definitely will) than go back to this part of Oakland.

i used to work on hegenberger at the SPCA right across the street from that in n out. I went there all the time. Oakland is an absolute dumpster fire of a city and its only going to get worse.

I love In N Out fries! Mostly because they actually taste like potatoes. And not greasy, salty cardboard. Oh well, more for me!

I moved to the bay area for school and I've never felt more unsafe then I when was waiting for an uber not 1 block from the Oakland Police Department station, watching a guy look underneath and try the doors of every single car parked on the other side of the street, then move onto trying to open the doors and windows of every building. If I happened to be on his side of the street, I'm pretty sure the dude would've tried to rob me and my friend. We walked the other way as he slowly and methodically tried to commit crimes TOWARD the direction of the station. Not only that, but 2/3 parks that we saw on our way to check out some places to eat looked like they were taken over as encampments. I walked by the Chinese Garden Park and there was zero chance that I was going to go in there, it looked positively dystopian from across the road.

The notion of in n out burger being “not that good” is wild. I appreciate what you are doing for Oakland and the Bay Area but I gotta say in n out is top 5 burgers all time.

In-N-Out burgers actually are good, though. A lot of the most famous chefs and food critics in the world (e.g. Gordon Ramsay, Bobby Flay, the late Anthony Bourdain, etc.) have claimed In-N-Out as the best fast food burger (if they had to choose a fast food burger.) Mainly because the ingredients are so fresh. Usually the people who don't like In-N-Out just need something more salty, more fried, and some bacon, which is a valid preference.

Bout time someone took In N Out down a notch. It's not bad, but it doesn't deserve the 30 minute drive thru lines you see in places like the South Bay. It's a sort of Plato's Cave mentality that elevates mediocre options to cult status. Give me a Whataburger over that any day
