Love him in the Virginian and miss him. Yes, the show is about the triumph of good versus evi which is sadly very rare today. Now I watch the Virginian very early for me at 7AM Monday through Friday. Wish it goes back to the previous time at 11AM.

I am catching up on the reruns right now. I am old enough to have sat in front of my TV most Wednesday nights for nine seasons. The show has lost nothing over time. In fact it only shines brighter when stacked up against some of the tripe on TV today.

Just found out that he passed. This was an intelligent western that also held the attention of women and girls -- something that westerns rarely do. Thank you James and Doug, for the wealth of great entertainment that you have left for us.

Fine interview! Yes, western shows have a lot to say to the people today. I found that by watching all these shows during the "lockdown" showed how much compassion the characters had, even though some of the rough gruff.

JD's reference to his ill wife and his induction into the Walk of Western Stars, tells me that this interview was done in 2019 before his wife passed in August. RU-vid should required the airing date of these timed pieces as well as the posting date.

Great to see most everybody again. Really! A pity the Grainger siblings couldn't be there --- Sara and Don. Now I -- quite the fan -- will offer a critique of these 15 minutes. Without having a good moderator with researched and informed and specific questions we end up deprived of hearing as much information as we'd really like; as we crave. I don't think I learned one thing in addition to what has been mentioned on other RU-vid presentations compiled over the past dozen or so years as well as the series' DVD bonus tracks. . . . BTW, what a thrill to be an attendee at The Autry for the 50th. And get a few one-on-one minutes with Jim when he came out to the compound's shaded front wall for a smoke break. Okay, here's the link to a nostalgic, fabulous, 3-minute montage of memorable scenes of memorable stars and memorable and some-forgotten guest stars; lovely music perfectly coordinated with a multitude of various scenes. It's titled: Fool Hearts (The Virginian, 1962-1971). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5SGCO0ZqmVw.html For the Ardmore moderator, talent and audience -- to watch THAT before with those dozens of anecdote-inducing scenes -- why that would easily elicit 90 minutes -- like "The Virginian"'s running time -- of non-stop, original, fascinating, truthful, colorful anecdotes and individual or shared memories. Afterward the live and RU-vid audience would think "Wow, can you believe it? They were great. They had such wonderful things to say. And about so many different people, lots of episodes some I'd forgot." . . . Now that Jim's gone to his reward I wonder if in a 2022 or thereafter event about / including "The Virginian" talent, if David Hartman would be asked to participate and would he participate. FYI I inquired on another RU-vid thread tied into our shared, admired, beloved show what was the "bad blood" or "oil-and-water" between Drury and Hartman? Jim specified about Stewart Granger at the Autry event plus in his interview with author Paul Green for THE book. Perhaps he felt comfortable to specify since Granger was 'no longer with us.' Whatever; but not a peep about David. . . . . Personally I could watch David Hartman in every 43, one-hour episode of "The Bold Ones" wherein he played a doctor, opposite E.G. Marshall and John Saxon (a "V" guest star). However and quite unfortunately I CRINGE when David Sutton is on a "Virginian" episode -- ANY episode, including Sara's and John Saxon's love story, 'Vision of Blindness,' one of my favorites. IMO he just doesn't say "western" like everybody else.

There was an anthology TV westerns series (half hour long episodes) from the late 50's early 6o's. Forgot the name. I remember one episode, where James Drury was the star. The character he played wore his gun slanted from left to right on his waist. The name of the episode and the character James played was 'The Virginian'. I sure hope my memory isn't playing tricks on me in my older age. Anyone else remember that series? (One episode even had Dan Blocker and Michael Landon as a pair of friends). I don't think it was Zane Grey Theater.

It was a difficult day hearing of the passing of the Virginian. As a kid growing up in the 1950s and 60s without a father present, I guess I tended to look toward television entertainment to a large degree for my role models. The Virginian and the Rifleman were probably the two biggest, along with the mercury astronauts. I’m just sorry I never got the chance to tell James Drury thank you for the cowboy code and the many happy hours watching his work. He really brought that character to larger than life and I always got the feeling that he was not creating a character he was just kind of playing himself. I think a lot of what I’ve learned growing up that worked for me all these many years can be attributed to him to a degree. Plus I’m grateful that my family had such a strong moral compass to pass on to me.
