Welcome to Goldens Gone Wheeling! We're Jeff and Noelle... we enjoy getting outdoors with our two golden retrievers, Cooper and Kaia, who are two of the main reasons for this adventure! Follow along as we share our adventures off-roading, overlanding, camping and exploring in our Jeep (known as Calypso). In addition to adventure video's, we will share how we built out our Jeep including upgrades/modifications, repairs and how we setup Calypso for off-grid exploring and fun.
Subscribe, follow along and enjoy the ride!
Thanks for the support! Jeff, Noelle, Cooper and Kaia
Glad to see you're recovering. Nice overview. Thanks. I use three apps: Gaia, onX Offroad, and CalTopo. For the most part, any of the three apps are sufficient. Gaia has been my favorite for planning and logging trips because of the layers available and the depth of custom markings I can make (campsites, routes, trail notations, points of interest, etc.). It is important to remember that the map is not the territory. I have found that some roads/trails exist on the map but don't exist in real life--and vice versa. I have found that I can only get a complete picture of the backcountry trails and roads using a combination of all three apps.
You nailed it Michael. This statement is soo true, "some roads/trails exist on the map but don't exist in real life--and vice versa." We were pretty much exclusively Gaia until this year. We definitely run into trails that are not in onX when we are out, I wonder if we should be firing up Gaia again to see if they show up there? We might have to try that.
Thanks! Gaia is the tool we used to use all the time, and it's really quite capable. I think the wife just got really frustrated with it locking up on us and having to restart the iPad so frequently to get it going again. We loved the tool, it was just that issue that convinced us to finally give onX a try.
Another data value to add. I'm brand new to 4x4s, I have a stock 2023 Wrangler on 33s, my 2nd trail I did was a 6 out of 10 was challenging but doable. I literally I didnt touch 4 low or lockers to see what it was capable of. It was Fins n Things in Moab. The next trail I did was a 2 and it ended up way beyond my skill. However it was unclear that the trail ended and the rest wasnt documented. This was 4 Arches near Canyon Lands. I did leave a comment on Onx stating it might need an upgrade to a 3, but note year to year trails change due to erosion so be prepared. Great video!
That's a really good point!. The data in the tools is only as good as the latest reports, and we all know the trail conditions can change over time. That's really good input!
Nicely presented. Given onX's steady improvements over the last several years, it has become a viable alternative to the 'G' brand. I still use both apps for planning.
Hey! Your walking.......with stairs!!!! Awesome to see you up and around 👍. Thanks for the content! We're currently using GAIA and it's pretty "user friendly" so far......however.......I REALLY like the 3D and the actual satellite view you were using. Not sure GAIA has that? We recently installed our Cargo Dog storage and they are a game changer for us. We saw them on one of your vids and knew right away thats what we were looking for. We want to head up to Big Bear in a couple weeks, but, the wildfires may not allow that. Say "HI" to Noelle and the pups for us and keep healing 👍. Jim & Michele
Thanks you guys! Hope you two are doing aweesome. We were just using Gaia as well for the longes time. Noelle was really good at using it, so we never really tried onX until this year. She just used to get really frustrated when the app would lock up on the iPad as we were out on the trails. I'm really glad the Cargo Dog worked out for you guys. It's so simple but just works really well. I sure hope those fires die down so you guys can get up to Big Bear. That is a really beautiful area, but I've never camped there before, only driven through. Noelle says "Hi", and hte pups are wagging their tails for ya. :) Jeff & Noelle
5 minites into the video and no mention of the trail jead name or general area of where the trail os at. Is there a reason y u can't tell the viewers what trail head IS? Or am I expected 2 watch the entire video on the off chance u mention it?
If you are refering to the propane tank holder on the spare tire, it's a combination two items: Power Tank Propane Tank Holder: powertank.com/collections/propane-brackets/products/bkt-2285 and the Rockslide Engineering EZ Rack: rockslideengineering.com/product/ez-rack-kit/ I believe you may be able to purchase the propane tank holder from Rockslide engineering as well and get everything at one place. Regarding the cargo rack - Are you refering to the shelf inside that back of the jeep? If so, that is the American Adventure Labs cargo shelf found here: americanadventurelab.com/product/jeep-jl-mass-cargo-shelf/?attribute_pa_finish=textured-black Let me know if you were refering to something else.
There were several factors at the time. Cost, weight, size, noise and overall performance. There are only a few tires that are offered in a 38x13.5 R17. The Patagonia was the lightest, but was also a really good price. Several people in my area were using the tire including the jeeps at Metalcloak, and they were performing really well. The Nitto and the Mickey Thompson were both heavier, more expensive. The Mickey Thompson did not offer the right size. The Nitto heavier and much louder on the road.
Dude!!! You guys are in my living room! The way you two affectionately "haggle" is exactly what happens here 😂😂😂. YES......please let everyone know your schedule for your trips when appropriate. We'd love to meet you two and the pups. Be safe and keep healing 💪💪💪. Jim & Michele
@@GoldensGoneWheelin man onto the cascades vid, taking my current truck in tomorrow and depending on the outcome... might be jeep time (4th time in chevy 1500 durmax 2023) less than a yr and 5k miles lol
Good point. I actully replaced the front drive shaft with a double cardan u-joint front drive shaft when we installed the suspension. The stock drive shaft just wont handle the angles, but I'll still be taking a look at that as well.
Hey Man. Hope your recovery is going as well as it can. Really enjoying your latest content. I’m in Southern California and camping along the coast is a memory. I hope you decide to do a trip along the Northern California coast when you’re able. You’re comment when demoing the light about “something or someone” intruding on your camp got me wondering what steps you take to protect yourselves while on an adventure? That would be an interesting topic for a video if you have any thoughts to share. Take care, Man.
Thank you Rob. Awesome suggestions. Lost Coast has been on our minds for a long time, so we'll get there eventually. Personal protection is a really good topic. I remember camping on some of the beaches between Santa Barbara and San Louis Obispo when I was a kid, but I dont think it's like it used to be. I know Oceano is still a spot, but really crowded I'm sure. Other than that, I think it's just Usal up near the lost coast area, and I dont think you can really camp "on the beach" there either. There are still some descent camp grounds, but we'll figure something out for the coast. :)
Kudos for all your efforts to keep the channel going (and interesting) despite your injury. There are so many choices when it comes to 4X4-based camping gear. Would an Ursa Minor top be a consideration? It would be cozy sleeping quarters for two, but the other advantages, like quick open/closing and standing up inside the Jeep, are features I've come to appreciate using one over the last couple of years. Along with seeing what you choose for new tires, I would be up for a discussion about vehicle weight.
Great suggestion Charles. I was aware of the Ursa Minor, but I never really took a close look at them. I'll have to see how that would work with the rest of our setup and the dogs. Thanks! I do have a plan to load the jeep up completely and put it on the scales. Once I do that I'll try and pull together something on the weight as well.
The algorithm led me to your channel, and so I stayed and watched. Man, that water crossing was truly spectacular. We live in Idaho and it is an amazing place to explore in a Jeep. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. BTW- Nice Jeep.
Nice video Greg! I have camped with many people who use Gazelle tents and they are awesome! The weights savings is also a bonus compared to an RTT. Keep up the great content and will see you at the @395jnky event in November!
My wife was wondering how your recovery has been going. You were a topic of conversation as we were up at the Devil's Gate near Succor Creek. I like the organic feel of your delivery on this. Keep it not over produced. I get the need to edit a bit, but I thoroughly enjoyed you stumbling through the intro. Would like to hear more about the Exped. I'm really close to buying one to see how it is. Both the wife and I have bad backs, and really need something to keep enjoying the camping.
You guys are awesome. Let her know I appreciate it and I'm working on recovering as fast as I can. 😄 We had some fun playing around with this video. Trying not to take things too seriously. Regarding the ExPed mattress. Noelle is actually more comfortable on it than our temperpedic mattress at home. They are a bit pricey, but I think they are worth the investment. There is some ability to adjust the firmness to your liking because they are a bit thicker.
Hey Bobby, I ended up using a combination of the 2" Universal Stand Off Kit from ARS found here adventureracksystems.com/universal-stand-offs-for-ars-rack-systems.html to clamp onto the ARS rack. Then I used the brackets that came with the OVS awning bolted to the stand off mounts. Note that I did use three of these brackets because I didnt know if only two of them would be enough for the larger 270 degree awning. Hopefully that helps. Let me know if you need more info.
My kit is almost ready for an actual overland trip. I’m still tied up to campsites and trails rides around about. I can’t wait for taking a trip like this.
Thats great! Don't overthink it too much. Get out there and have some fun. I think you'll find the setup is never perfect, and the best way to improve it is to get out there and use it. Best wishes to ya.
Thanks. It really is awesome up there and having the EPIC Kraken system makes airing up post adventure a breeze! One of the best additions to our setup!
I really enjoy your videos and photos. You have a great eye and a knack for story telling. Of course the killer Jeep and the scenery don't make it too difficult to swallow either :)
You bet! It was a good exercise in editing to take old poor footage and stitch it together. I hate using that blanking fill function on the sides, but a lot of the footage was shot on a cell phone in portrait mode. 🤣
@@GoldensGoneWheelin I saw that. However, you used the phone images very well in your video. It usually bothers me. But not here! Gotta add: The background music was sensational
@@GoldensGoneWheelin just did a day trip to the Devil's Gate. While your video is very good, just doesn't do it justice. I need to explore those areas more. (Grand Cherokee did great.)
Ah geez... Not sure it's top of the line. We seem to acquire a piece here and there as needed. I definitely wish this stuff was less expensive though. Damn overland tax.
