I’ve recently completed my MA in Applied Linguistics and spent the past 2 decades plus of my life learning languages, which means I know a thing or two about how to do this thing.
When I’m not sharing how to learn languages on the internet, I’m trying new-to-me sports (because being a beginner is the best!), hunting down vintage jewellery, and playing with my tortoise Gonzo (who speaks a grand total of zero languages).
To be fair to the British family, you described they know they won't be appreciated by the waiter even if they did try to speak the local language. Have you tried to speak speak the local language only to be responded to in English? As an English speaker, in order to successfully use another language outside English, free zones such as language conventions, you have to be something like a B1 level to avoid being responded to in English.

Merci mille fois Lindsay, you and also @storylearning plus @elyssespeaks @LindieBote have been my main powerful inspirations to relink with languages as each language does have its specialities (and limits hence why to know more than one is cool). I love English or American for its funkyness and breaking the ice conversation when possible but it is very limited to express deep feelings and emotions plus is not always a diplomatic card according where you are in the world. Yes, dabbling in languages is a smart way to have fun and still record some phrases or colloquial/idiomatic expressions that can open many cultural/commercial/educational doors that English alone cannot open. Ma langue maternelle est le français, mais je parle également couramment l'anglais et l'américain (j'ai vécu plus de 12 ans aux États-Unis et 22 ans au Royaume-Uni, et toute ma famille est anglaise) et de l'espagnol Mexican vers B1... L'anglais est une bonne langue à connaître, mais pas assez pour ouvrir immédiatement les portes commerciales/éducatives/culturelles/artisanales aux pays qui ne parlent pas l'anglais comme première ou deuxième langue officielle. Outre le Brexit en Grande-Bretagne et la présence de nombreux Trumpistes radicaux en Amérique, les gens utilisent de plus en plus l'anglais par mérite et non comme un reflet aveugle des années 90. De plus, l'anglais est assez limitée dans l'expression de certaines émotions ou sentiments, également pour le débat en soi, l'anglais ne va pas loin, le français dur par contre, le fait. Bien sûr, ayant vécu aux États-Unis pendant plus d'une décennie, j'aime Sesame Street, PBS, les diners, les techniques positives américaines, les formes américaines de défense juridique, etc... et plus de deux décennies en Angleterre, Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, la charité pour les animaux. à la manière britannique, la loi commune anglaise... mais une chose n'est pas l'autre. BUT HERE ARE THE NEWS this month of May 2024: I decided to CONTINUE ITALIAN (your video here is part of it but I have seen three others underlining how fascinating it can be). I ADORE because of its melodic singing tones, hand gestures, opera, and antiquity! And the food! Also, you said learn a language for personal enjoyment and pleasure: Italian art, operas and its history as much as their powerful emotional songs and literature (like Dante), is attracting me much! Certo, essere francese mi aiuterà ad imparare l'italiano, ma solo per alcune basi, dato che la pronuncia come e la coniugazione quanto sono molto diverse! Se a questo si aggiungono le espressioni idiomatiche e le frasi colloquiali italiane, per parlarlo correttamente ci vorrà tempo e voglia. Quindi, sono in francese, americano, inglese, quasi intermedio in spagnolo latino-americano, ma parlo correntemente italiano. Quindi, l'Italina t è a pieno regime per ora! Thank you so much for having been a HUGE inspiration for me to reconnect correctly to language power! and THIS time, I am going to enjoy Italian also, as much, for its phonetic pleasure and new thinking! Also...still... it is the 4th most studied language in the world and even Italians are shocked about this.

I’ve been listening his podcasts, completely finished the one which is for beginners, another one called “Show me the World” and heard almost 35% of the podcast for advanced learners. There are so many amazing guests participating in these podcasts. This is such a brilliant creative work! Je me suis enfin décidé à réviser mon dialecte espagnol Mexicain (aux États-Unis, nous vivions dans le sud-ouest, en Californie en fait, où le mexicain en tant que langue était fort et souvent utilisé). Aussi, à Long Island , NY, j'ai appris de l''espagnol (Costa Ricain) en 1 an avec une femme qui s'occupait de nos filles ). J'adore l'espagnol Mexicain, surtout du Yucatan. Egalement, je me reconnecte avec de la langue grecque (même du Koine) et joue avec du kréole de l'île Maurice 👍💜 Et j'en reste là. I have been going to anime conventions for 20 years and Every Time wish I had kept up with my Japanese, but my unaddressed attention problems and short term memory issues make me a crap teacher and a worse student. The few times I have been able to bust out a phrase or two it always takes the visitors aback because they are presumably used to how rude and comparatively uncultured the U.S. is. But it's such a beautiful language! I am, however, thankful for my younger self for always keeping my trusty dictionary near whenever I would read. I love the Romance language roots that allow you to glean meanings and similarities between words and even other tongues. I am no scholar but I nerd out about new discoveries all the time.

Today, I had to remind the place where I work, in England, that a colleague I met there , whom does not speak anything else than English and had a closed attitude to diversity, that it was not healthy for the mind and also for health of any service long term. The less we fear, the less we discriminate: so true!
For me there are several reasons to learn languages: 1. It’s fun and rewarding to make new friends and experience new cultures in a more intimate way. 2. It’s great for brain training and I now feel stronger in other areas. 3. Ward off dementia. 4. You learn HOW to learn a language. For me, the first foreign language was the hardest. 5. Piggybacking from (4). Let’s say one day the international lingua Franca changes. I may not speak the language it becomes, but I will know where to begin and have the skill of learning. 6. To understand other cultures, helps us understand our own cultures better. 7. You can shock natives on social media

J'ai aimé l'idée de faire de l'apprentissage d'une langue un passe-temps que nous pratiquons comme une habitude quotidienne. En fait, c'est exactement ce que j'ai fait lorsque j'ai commencé à apprendre la langue française. Depuis mon enfance, j'ai ressenti une envie irrésistible de lire, ainsi, je passais de longues heures à lire des romans de grands écrivains français, comme Jules Verne, Victor Hugo, La Fontaine, et d'autres écrivains français classiques. Grâce à cette lecture, j'ai pu développer mes connaissances linguistiques en langue française, et mon style d'écriture dans cette langue, jusqu'à atteindre le niveau B2 en français, selon la norme européenne pour l'apprentissage des langues, et je m'engage actuellement à développer ma compétence de parler en langue française, en communiquant avec des locuteurs natif de cette langue via Internet, pour élever mon niveau linguistique aux niveaux avancer, merci. yea good video learning languages takes a long time but it doesn't take much effort so it wont be a big deal i started learning Spanish and other languages in 2017 because i had some annoying moments when knowing Spanish would have been handy this is happening more and more bit its not a problem for me anymore while it was rare in the past i do wish i started even earlier but the early 2010s and 2000s where a busy time for me. and during my childhood technology was too limited no internet and so on .so i don't blame myself for not doing it much earlier because my modern learning style requires the internet and modern technology that didn't exist until 20 years ago. and even in 2010 it was not very accessible when you where not at home or even at home when doing chores or having to take turns using the pc because we only had 1 .
I am from India and learning Spaninsh . This is my fourth language after English, because in India Hindi is a main language.So i know hindi , English and bhojpuri as well as i am learning Espanol.❤❤❤😢
This is why I'm not a big fan of language classes. They aren't all bad, people can learn to speak some of the language they want, but the problem is that the students usually never learn how to learn languages after the class ends. They are left without a textbook and a teacher and no direction so they usually just stop learning or using the language altogether. That's what happened to the German I learned in college. I took two years, could kind of speak it, but quickly forgot about it with no further direction. When I wanted to learn Japanese years later, I learned a lot from RU-vidrs like MattvsJapan, Steve Kaufman, Days and Words, and Refold on how to actually self study languages. The core steps are simple, but there is a lot of small details that I had to learn to make self learning work for me. I really think that if more people spent time learning language learning skills instead of messing around in apps like Duolingo or generic classes then there would be a lot more successful language learners out there.
I had a similar experience. Two years of French, forgot all of it after I got out of classes. Then last year, I decided to tackle learning Chinese through self-study, and figuring out how to learn that made it much easier to start others.

Great tips and advice. I work nights so it is difficult to find classes, that fit my schedule and the languages I am interested in. The structure of a class does help me stay focused and on track though. I enjoy your videos.

I suppose I have developed a weak mind over time, or I have lots of wants and don't focus. I should improve my French, to better communicate if I ever get back to France to visit relatives. I studied Italian for a while, for work, but the pandemic killed the opportunity to go to Italy for work, so I stopped and living in Germany, with the military I feel I should know more German than I do. Motivation/dedication is difficult, but I know that it is an investment in the future. Thanks again.@@LindsayDowLanguages
Im an American with Scots-Irish ancestry. All before and up to the Irish Rebellion of 1790. Most of my family tree is Scottish surnames. We settled in Western Penn and Western N.C. Both these groups pushed on to Central Texas. The biggest chunk came from SW Scotland before Antrim and Down. Ive been having fun learning Scottish Gaelic, Irish, and Spanish on Duolingo and anywhere else I can find.
I feel like the study and preparation to learn the words and vocab to use to talk is more beneficial than the actual talking at a beginner to intermediate level. Listening to native speakers talk is also very helpful as it teaches learners the common phrases and natural responses that real people actually use. Talking as a beginner can feel frustrating trying to communicate with only a small vocab and a few common phrases.
I completely agree with dabbling & making connections. I’m learning French with my daughter while also learning Spanish independently and I was told that it was kinda a “no-no” for beginners because of the similarities. However, I have actually found it extremely helpful and my Spanish knowledge has complimented my French learning.
Hi Ms. Lindsay! I had said I want to learn Korean and I was gifted by a family member Ms. T. She gifted me a Korean dictionary, a South Korea flag which is 3x5 and a shirt that says happiness in Korean. But, when I entered the word 엉덩이 into google translate, it translated it as the a word which is a bad word. But, in my dictionary it says 엉덩이 as buttocks. So, when I found out the translation on the translation app. I began to shy away but I really love Korean so much. I want to learn a Korean dialect. I already have the characteristics of the dialect written down. So, I can convert standard Korean words into the dialect by using my dictionary. I have issues with consistently or I overthink everything and get anxious. Than, just jump around with languages trying to find the language for me.😅😅 I really believe The Lord put this Korean dialect on my heart for a reason. 😊😊 I have a plan, the plan is THERE. It’s just putting the plan in motion and sticking with it. 😅 Ms. T is very supportive of me learning ANY language. But, she wants me to do it for ME and stay consistent.😊😊❤❤ I have dabbled in my languages like German, Japanese, Mandarin, and French. But, I got called indecisive for jumping around and not staying true to anything. Than, to make things worse. I would broadcast to people which language I said I would learn buuuuut. A few days in and I changed languages again. Either I got discouraged by someone or something happened that made me discouraged😅 or I ended up learning a language for someone else who does not even talk to me and not for ME. basically, being a people pleaser. 😅😅 And the way I LOVE to write In Korean is this: She is Swiss 그녀 있데이 스위스 사람. I love using the same sentence structure as English in Korean. But, there have been many people in the RU-vid world who would give me their “suggestions” on how to write a sentence better in Korean. When I wish with all my heart. Those very people. Would just, be kind and supportive of how I choose to express myself in Korean. I have learned that people in real life are MUCH MORE accepting, friendlier, and understanding. 😊😊
It hurts to hear a lot of people say danish is one of the most ugly languages. Like seriously. How can someone hate Danish. Danish must be one of the coolest languages in the universe. The paradox is that while technology has made it possible to learn any language, at the same time it has made language learning redundant. As long as you carry your smart phone with you, you can talk to anyone, regardless of the languages you can speak. You can serf the Internet sites in any language, you just translate the page into your language. Only videos in unfamiliar languages remain inaccessible, but subtitles are becoming more and more common. Of course, you can keep learning languages as a hobby, your free time is yours. I have the same hobby and I do not plan to stop learning languages, no matter how far technology goes. 😃
I guess the thing that is left after technological spaces have achieved better and better translation systems is the old-fashioned human connection and being able to understand another culture more deeply. I’d like to hope technology will never be able to replace that
