You can toss the gizzards and bones in a pot and boil them for broth. Also crescent roll dough should work if you're looking to make pot pies with a muffin pan.

Good looking young dog. During training sessions I think I would remove long leach and work him with a short leach just like you would use on him to go to woods. That way you can work his handling also. Sit stay heal come etc. Before you release the squirrel from the trap take the leach off the dog. Give that dog a sporting chance. I hate to think what could happen if the dog was running full out and the leach hung up. That would be a nasty experience for the dog. You want it to be a bad experience for the squirrel. The dog needs to know what to expect when he catches the squirrel. The squirrel bites will help make the break the dog. Above all he will learn what to do when he catches it, don’t let him eat it. Have him fetch it to you. Happy hunting.

What are you doing? This isn't "training" anything; you're just conditioning the dog to annoy neighbors and terrorize a squirrel.

NOOO!!! Don't sand anything. Put the barrel in the freezer and apply heat to the receiver with a hair dryer or heat gun and they should slip right together.

Glad to find your channel. Sub’d and liked. Great workout for a young’un, including the context, the short grass and sparse, short trees. Do you even set up a similar situation but toss a line over a branch so that, after letting pup worry the squirrel in the trap at base of tree, then you can lift trap up to a low branch? Many advantages in developing his chop n’ hop. First, it prevents the squirrel from the risk of him denning up and vanishing (from pups inexperienced perspective). The risk here is that, and this can sometimes occur after only a couple few events, if the squirrel dens up (or even does a belly lay on a broad branch, hides in nest, etc), pup learns that, by powerful means of classical-Pavlovian conditioning, that when the squirrel hits the tree the game is over. At very least it can undermine his drive on the tree, and at worse lead to learnt helplessness, which will cause him to despair the game. Secondly, and I’m as guilty of this as anyone, so at the risk of hypocrisy...need to watch both the vocab, the frequency, and the timing of the verbal cue/inducement to open on the squirrel. I noticed you used three different words/phrases trying to cue pup to open/bark. There’s a saying that suggests “Don’t name it until you love it,” meaning to don’t inject a verbal cue or command into the teaching/learning process until pup is performing the attending behavior according to the criteria that you’ve determined you desire. Reason being is that, if you review the video, you dropped one of the three (need to chose one and be consistent with it to avoid confusion) bark cues considerably more often when it wasn’t followed by a bark than when it was. This leads to learnt irrelevance, teaching pup that rather than a trustworthy word from you that always leads to opening and the attending dopamine dump/arousal, the cue/s become white noise for pup that isn’t associatively paired with any target behavior. So, when pup is already opening consistently enough that you can predict it, then begin dropping your single chosen cue 1-2 seconds prior to first bark. This will soon condition pup to trust that when you give the cue, there’s always a squirrel to bark at, even when he doesn’t yet see or smell it. Just some observations I hope are helpful!

Great video--very helpful. I've started training my 3 y/o mountain cur to track squirrels, from watching a couple RU-vid videos. He can track pretty much like yours here, which is encouraging. I've been dragging the squirrels then hiding them on the ground. I like your technique of hanging them from the tree--it's much better. Thanks!

Gosh I really admire your dog’s physiques, now that’s what a true Mountain Cur should look like. Where on earth did you get that dog from... I’m looking forward to have a Mountain Cur just like that. Though the body structure is fit and healthy, he looks very fine for the breed. By any chance you happen to know the breeder? Cause I want to revolutionize the breed by working to improve its drive and have the compatibility for a active lifestyle, Such as working purposes and agility!

Our mountain cur has a super loud bark, esp when he's treed a squirrel in our backyard. His bark carries for at least a quarter mile. We have to bring him in right away, so we don't bug the neighbors. I assume the mountain men who raised his ancestors bred that loud-bark trait in, for squirrel hunting.

@@passitonoutdoors2664 I've had 20 years with them and the ones I had were not into obedience. You really need a sound/shock collar and know how to gently use it. The sound of a beep usually is enough to make them listen. I do love these dogs though.

Ok...I"m a fan. This video is amazing and I can't wait to follow along and see how it progresses. One question: (sorry to be dense): was that a live squirrel in the cage? Where did you get it? Did you let it go for that one tree training session? Thanks.

Thank you!! He is out of Squirrel Dog Dynasty in Ohio. I can't remember his exact bloodline, but he has blood from OMCBA / WTDA / UKC / Jukebox / Thunder / HOF Thundersport / Hummer / 20-20 Tank / Mt. Jackson / Streak / Geronimo / Apache / Stretch / Sniper / Nickleson/ Oklahoma Mohawk-Hawk / Hardwood Georgetta / Treeing Tennessee Brindles. I have had him in the woods a couple times. He's done good so far! Ranged a little too far once and I had to look for him, but I recently got a collar bell for him and i am training him some whistle commands, especially "come/here," which he has responded to really well so far! I have not started gun training yet. I am in the process of setting up a squirrel training tube with overhead part, so once I have that done I'm hoping to start him on some 22 blanks
