Take less. Do more. - Gossamer Gear is the backpacking experience company that exists for the outdoor enthusiast who either wants to venture farther into the backcountry or simply wants to lighten their load.
Can the aluminium frame be taken out, and can be put back in again? I have an aluminium frame in my present pack, and if I fly to Europe and want to avoid hold charges, I remove this frame. Upon arrival, I assemble an homemade frame replica made of small-diameter plastic tubing that I bought from a B & Q, our local garden centre. I strengthen the plastic tubing with wood dowling (again from B & Q) that I push into each tube. It works very well and I've found that my plastic tube method is more comfortable on my back than my aluminium frame, as it tends to flex a little as I move.
I used to take a tarp and fold it halfway down the middle, covering myself. I could only do this in the fall, though, otherwise I’d be eaten alive by bugs overnight. I didn’t hear my brother complaining, though, since he got the tent all to himself.
Tarp camping is superior, because you are allowed to do it EVERYWHERE here. Except like wilderness protection zones, but even on private property ur just allowed to setup a tarp and hammock/bivy. Only issues I run into are damn slugs, first camping trip with new expensive gucci gear... 20 slugs crawled up on my tarp, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and covered everything in slime and squished slugs
Tarp. All day long. Almost every condition. I still love my altaplex but the versatility of the tarp is fun and can make the experience just a little bit better. However, if we had issues with ticks here? I wouldn’t risk it.
Put a hammock with a removable bug net on or over it, find a couple of suitable trees (or other relativity vertical, stationary objects), and sleep like a baby. No wet, muddy floor either - ever!

Central-northern Ontario canoe tripping the tarp comes out around this time of year when the bitting insect are gone. I haven’t had problems with ticks in Algonquin or farther north of that
Judging by that demonic little bloodsucker on your leg, I’ll say tent…I tend to carry a tarp as an extra rainfly or to keep the bottom of my tent clean anyway
I just can't comprehend that there's places where a tarp is realistically viable. But then again I live in Florida. I basically need a tent just to walk to my car
Tent in bug season (I often skip hiking & camping at this time because it’s just miserable), tarp tent between bug season and winter, 4S tent in winter.
Tent. Every time. Ants, spiders, ticks, mosquitos, snakes, wind, rain, flash flooding, blackout for heat, gear protection, no need for trees like the hammock crowd... the list goes on. Worth the extra pound.
Currently running a Hennessy hammock with a bug net and rain fly. I love it. Do you live in an area with few trees? I find it’s hard to find a proper spot on the forest floor for a tent where I am. I actually own a nice tent too…
