Not recommended, but in a pinch it works. Have a friend testing wvo/wmo mixed and see long term how well it work. I only run wvo in my truck and have run a mix of wvo and wmo in my shop furnace.
I just bought an 87 on Monday. Seller couldn't get it to run. I Got it running today. I'm testing a few things, and changing fluids, and hoping to have it on the water soon!
Just curious how much boost are you making at a steady highway cruise versus full throttle? Does the boost level at say a steady unloaded cruise stay high enough to activate the blower bypass?
It runs around 5-7 psi running empty at 70-80 mph and 12 psi full throttle, with water meth 50/50 mix it's 16 psi full throttle. I have the bypass set to open at 10 psi.:)
@@444mopar Possibly, I found there was more overall performance with the bypass opening at 10 psi. I did try 5 psi and wasn't as good, so went back to 10. I'm running an N blower with a self made bypass. As I burn 100% waste veg oil, the truck is almost free to drive.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 That's awesome. How did you manage to find a source for used veg oil? I work at a truck shop so I could get some used motor oil but never enough to cover all my driving.
Hey possibly dumb question. Curious what the reason is behind why propane may have caused some of those major issues for you in that first year? Just want to understand the science behind that purely. Very cool build, and love to see you experimenting with alternative fuels in it like propane and veg oil!
I'm not entirely sure why the propane played a part in my issues. I've spoken to many a Detroit mechanic and they say the propane caused too much heat soak in the pistons and rings. This leads to scuffing and softening of the rings leading to lower compression. Another issue I had was ceramic material coming off the pistons and adding to the problem. Most of the rings were stuck and packed full of what looked like ceramic material. I removed the ceramics and honed the liners, one liner replaced due to too much scaring. I've not had an issue since and now run water meth instead of propane. My next engine build for the Diamond T with be at 280-300 HP with larger injectors and water meth. I'll be honing the new liner .002" to give a little more wiggle room so I don't have anymore issues.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 Appreciate the reply man! Just subscribed, I look forward to seeing your continued changes to this build and what else you come up with. Seeing a detroit two stroke in a new ford is not something you see everyday, even on youtube!
New subscriber here and I’m so glade I found you! I’m also in the midst of starting 6V53T swap! I was just wondering where you get your engines at? I kinda got lucky with my 6V53T with a guy here locally and I’m still in the market for another one preferably an aluminum block one, just wondering who you might recommend. Also do you know of any companies that make adapters so I can run a GM tranny? I would like to run a NV4500. Thanks.
For Gm transmissions, Phoenix Castings makes adapters to fit, for the NV4500 QuickDraw make a #2 adapter for an NV4500. I find my engines through friends and market place. Thanks for the sub:)
had been drilling on a rig with 12-71s . got the IHC with 3-53 . picked up the one hand he said i can hear you coming sounds just like we are coming out of the hole.
Hey there I've got the same boat but it's a 1987 model with the 2.3 Ford motor. What kind of speed are you getting at wot? I can only get mine up to about 35 with a light load(me and 1 other person) with the stock prop. I'm thinking I should be able to get a little more out of her. Thanks!
I'm running a 17" prop and top out at around 35-37 at 5200 rpm with my son and I. Heading out this afternoon and trying the stock prop to compare. If I'm not mistaken I think the red line should be 5500 rpm, so I'll let you now this evening.:)
Tried out the new prop 13-3/4 X15 and topped out at 37-39@5200 rpm. Looks like red line is 5200 rpm, not sure why I picked up 2 mph vs the 14X17 prop for the same rpm. Maybe the old prop is worn down.
@@detroitgarage9430 thanks for the reply! That is good info. Btw I found the manual for this boat online and per the manual the redline on the motor is 5600 rpm so you may be able to squeeze some more out of it. I know I'd be happy to hit 40 in it!
Thanks, yes just took a while for the oil to work it's way. Here's an update video on the engine. Project is on the back burner while I finish the Diamond T 4-53T project.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6jXozQ9Ytb8.html
The total cast was $4000 USD including the rebuild of the engine. Sold the 6.4 for $2000 USD and made all the parts in house for the swap. No labor costs as I did all the work.
18-20 hwy, 15-16 city and 11-13 towing. I burn veg oil in this and it's pretty much free to drive. I use 5 gallons of diesel every 3000 miles, the rest is veg oil.:)
Is using a full can of quick start bad for a detroit engine? I heard it's really bad. I am getting my 3-53 going amd they r trying to make it run with an electric pump before the regular govenor ? Not sure but I think they are going about things wrong.
Yes, no need to use ether if the fuel system is primed. No need for an electric pump, the engine driven pump is better suited for the Detroit 3-53. It uses fuel at 60 gallons an hour to cool the injectors. Adding an electric fuel pump before the engine driven pump will slow down the fuel flow.
