This looks absolutely gorgeous! I enjoy using mixed media myself. I really love mixing watercolor, alcohol markers, and colored pencils together on one drawing. However, the paper that I use (canson mixed media) doesn't seem ideal for markers, as it seems to dry them out rather quickly and grind at the nibs, which unfortunately makes the drawing look streaky. I also noticed that after a few washes of wet on wet layers of watercolor that the paper had a hard time accepting any colored pencil on top. Do you have any recommendations for paper that can handle both watercolor and alcohol markers? Thank you so much!

I am NOT a fan of burnishing, blender markers or solvents. These either damage the paper and or more often than not result in blotchiness in your blends. The best combination (in my opinion) is Glazing with Neutrals. If you have an iron will and unwavering patience to slowly build up 10-20 layers with a soft hand, you'll achieve amazing blends. A high quality paper and color pencil is also very helpful.

Your work is so beautiful. I'm really curious about your thoughts on the scale of a piece and how big or small a novice should be working at the beginning of their journey.
@Drawingwithcolour
@Drawingwithcolour Месяц назад
Hi and thank you for the kind words. For a novice beginning, keep the scale of your work to one that you anticipate you can keep going on, keep interested in and keep engaged with. I would never tell anyone what scale of a work to draw, even for a novice. That is your personal decision. But do know that a large work can be intimidating, and weird to draw when it’s a large scale. Build your skills, do practice as much as you can, and have fun. Cheers

I have the full set of Luminance, but I don’t see a link that says which colors you are using. In the video, it says there is a link in the description box, but the only link is to the Caran D’Ache website or your website. It would be helpful to know which ones you are specifically using. I’m a portrait artist, but I’m recovering from a rough surgery and it’s a long recovery, so I thought I’d use colored pencils since they won’t make a mess I’m in no position to deal with. But I’m trying to understand the medium as it is quite different than what I am used to. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials!

Thank you for making this very informative video. I learnt a lot. Quick question: What are the main differences between the burnishing pencils and the blender pencils except that the burnishing pencils push the pigments into the paper more? Does it mean that they effect layering afterwards differently?

I'm not an artist who uses a lot of blending. So you won't see me blending, particularly with solvents very often, it's just not my preference and I still get amazing results without it. But as I tell everyone, I'm just one artist, if blending works for you fantastic. Cheers and thanks for the comment.

It is far easier to darken a light background base color than lighten a dark one. To lighten a dark one requires excessive amounts of the light color. Unless one can work with one of the masking media. I've been tempted to try the Pencil and Brush powder but it is my understanding it needs a fixative to work properly.
@Drawingwithcolour
@Drawingwithcolour 2 месяца назад
If your subject is a base dark, it is not as difficult as you actually describe above, I do it all the time and work with the paper to control the levels of dark to light. It actually does NOT require an excessive amount of light colour. For me, it is far easier to work in this manner than build light to the darkest when the overall subject is going to be dark. Layering is the key and not go dark right off the bat at a 4 level. Never use masking media as it is impossible to remove without smearing the coloured pencils. Check my work, you can clearly see from my dark subjects that is definitely not as you might think or as difficult. Cheers
