Welcome to my channel which is basically a video diary of progress I've made in RC soaring. I continue to learn and develop my flying skills. Being completely self-taught it's been a long and a roller-coaster ride to get where I am now. You'll also see a record of gliders I've built or restored.
What do you think of the Resco Carl. I've got one half built from about 18 months ago because of ordinary life getting in the way. I'm thinking I should find the time to finish it to enjoy some low, close up flights during the calm autumn days of October/November.
I've found the Resco to be an excellent flyer. I did change the angle of attack a little because even though my CG was to the front of the range, the glider seemed too floaty for my liking. I prefer my gliders to cover the sky fairly quickly as I've gained more experience. I changed the angle of attack with a little piece of 1/64" ply under the front of the tailplane and a piece under the rear of the wing - close to where it's screwed down so as not to distort the flying surfaces. As regards wind - once you get towards 10mph, it does struggle to penetrate. Go for finishing yours, as it will continue to ride round on low level thermals for quite some time.
Thanks for this video. I've got an original Chief that my dad bought when he retired in the 90s. He cut all the pieces out but didn't get around to building it. I've been meaning to build it but I didn't like the idea of free flight, so it's been on the back burner for 25 years. It's now my next build and I will be following your rc conversion. Thanks again
I had the same issue with my frsky 6ch vario reciever, for such expensive recievers the antenna connections are shocking bad.. I had to carefully squeeze the little brass female pin back into shape, it had mushroomed out and the antenna was just half falling out of the socket.. as soon as I verified that it was connected properly, I ended up putting a dome of epoxy on it so I wonh have any issues with it again.. I really wish they would do away with those antenna connectors, there so bad..
"3 x 10m strands of 1/8" FIA rubber" You mean 3 10m lengths of 1/8" FIA rubber? If so, there is no way i can afford that here in NZ. it is NZ$4.10 per metre which would work out at around $120 !!!
Yes, I must get the Chief out some point this year... If it allows you to fly the Soarer Baby then install a motor for gaining height. You'll require minimal power, so a small, lightweight setup will work well. Enjoy the build and subsequent flights 👍
I've not bungeed these, but there is a hook included in the kit and a ready positioned hole for it. As regards the length and materials for the bungee/hi-start itself have a look at this video as a possibility or Angelwing Designs and Hyperflight (in the UK) both sell ready made ones that would be suitable.
Thinking of building a RES would you recommend this Carl? Maybe you could tell us what power train you fitted just in case someone wants to electrify it? Think I want to go back to my childhood and bungee launch! Cheers Tony
Hi Tony. Based on my early flights, yes the Resco is a great inexpensive option, although it's now quite a dated design. As you probably realise developments of these RES models moves on year on year, and what's nice is that we non competitive flyers can enjoy the very models used in competitions. Have a look on the Hyperflight website at the various RES choices they have. For bungee launch I'm currently building a Magic 2 SL (Superlight) which is one of these competition level models. If you go for the Resco, you can buy the kit version from 'Model Shop Leeds.' This can be built either as electric or pure glider. I do have one of these kits unbuilt that I was going to put on eBay at a discounted price. Model Shop Leeds also have the ARF electric versions too. I was going to do a brief overview of the glider, so I'll ensure I include the power setup. Hopefully you thinking of building turns into actually building a RES glider, as they really are lovely gliders. For me it will be quite handy having an electric and bungee launch as it's not always convenient, time wise, to set up the hi-start.
@@RCSoaringDiaries thanks Carl, I'm hoping for a RES " next winter build" been checking Hyperflight a lot! as I'm getting on a bit I'm also gonna electrify the Longshot I got from you, gonna go for the Vladimir Powernose I think! Cheers Tony
Hi Paul. Yes better than last year. Getting myself organised for some flying in 2024. I have a few new models I purchased for 2023 that I will set up for this year instead....
The receiver you can get from: Microaces microaces.myshopify.com/collections/all-in-one-receivers/products/all-in-one-aio-5ch-micro-receiver but I did find the linear servos didn't always have enough torque, so I changed to using the following receiver and separate micro servos: microaces.myshopify.com/collections/micro-receivers/products/frsky-d8-compatible-super-micro-receiver microaces.myshopify.com/collections/servos/products/micro-rotary-servo-pair Check out my full house version of the glider for arrangement: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UfeWVAtExzM.html
Just logged into my channel after a very long time. Thanks for your encouragement 👍 After a difficult 2023 I'm actually getting myself organised for more flying this year with some new gliders I intended to fly last year! My intention is to start uploading some content soon...
Carl, I have a "Joy" aswell, trying to rebuild it with Motor, would you mind telling me what motor ESC and spinner you used? Seems like yours is really well balanced in terms of high performance and low weight, thank you!

Odd controls.. Typically the wing servos operate as Elevator AND Aileron... via trans mix. Why ? add in an elevator servo and its' pointless complexity.
I love the look of the Marabu for light wind gliding. But I see you enjoy the Olympic too. Which do you recommend? I really only want a light wind glider at the moment. Thznkbyou
Excellent! Could this be run on a LIFE battery (simply due to fire risk etc) and use a slightly larger prop to compensate? I’d only want low power snyway, but would like to use safer chemistry if sloping it.
Hello Carl, I’m new to DLGs and have enjoyed your Pug V2 videos - enough so, I will be acquiring one myself. In this video, I was curious as to what Tx/Rx combo you are using which enables Altitude call outs (on a switch, I presume?), and can it also do a Variometer function? Anyhow, many thanks and happy new year.
Just finishing up the pug and noticed the location of yur pegs....the one that the kit is drilled for is too far inboard and doesn't seem right so am assuming needs to be further outboard..
