I'm a sound engineer working with live sound for 20+ years. I work primarily with the Waves LV1 mixer and all of the Waves plugins. On this channel I show tips and trix for mixing live sound. I show things on the LV1 mixer but a lot of things can be implemented on any digital console. If you have any questions or suggestions for a topic let me know.
Hey Joe, have you ever had a problem with your Tactus Stage muting all inputs until you change the gain on one of the input channels? I have, and it's rather unnerving to have a whole box worth of inputs suddenly go silent. I find myself not using the Tactus, and sticking to my STG's instead...just because of this issue.
Oh, that's a new one. Never heard of this but it sounds a bit scary. I get that you're sticking to other boxes. You really have to trust your gear doing what we do.
Thanks for the comparison! I only have DiGiGrid IO but I am very happy with it. The IOX are perfect for wired inears as they have 4 headphone outs. I have a few of them distributed across the stage and one at FOH so I do not need to have analoge sub snakes. They are even more cost effective compared to other options. They have high quality preamps as well. Never had any issues.
I tried to get a Tactus Stage before buying my SG4000. I was told by multiple distributors that it was discontinued. I also reached out to Peavey multiple times to confirm but got no response. From my perspective, all evidence points to it being a discontinued product. Maybe someone else can confirm otherwise 🤷♂️.
I wish that Ionic had 8 outputs on the back. That would make it 16 by 16. I also wish that the rack ears were reversable. That way you could mount it backwards in a rack and have a splitter wired to it much easier. It would make wiring my external inserts that I used cleaner. I love the Ionic, I just wish It had more outputs on the back. They could even fit 2 AES in and outs on the back and still have room for 8 analog outs.
I have the Digigrid D (not IOX). I find both Tactus and Ionic to be better. I’ve not made any in depth comparisons but the D feels like a cheaper unit. Not bad, just not as good.
HI. I have waves super rack on my pc. I would like to use it on sq7 via USB. How many insert effects could I use? I would like to have some plugins on drum bus, bass, vocal and master out.
On SQ i think you can have 32 paths if I’m not mistaken. The amount of inserts depends on how much your pc can handle. But running a few plugins on a few busses should be possible on just about any computer. With a beefier cpu you can run more plugins.
Well the delay compensation is always on. So if you don't do anything, the whole console is delay compensated. But then you can go in and work with different delays for different outputs via the delay groups. Not sure if this answered your question though ...
Hello friend, thank you very much for the video but I have a question regarding why you send the auxiliaries to the matrix (what would be the advantage or benefit?)
Hi. The benefit is that I can place an EQ on the matrix to correct for different in ears. And since I listen to the aux I don't hear that "correction" eq. The other benefit is that I can go up or down in volume on the matrix going to the musician without having the volume go up or down in my cue mix. Basically I have more freedom to fix stuff for individual artists without having it affect what I hear. Hope this helps.
Well you could. But I use a mac M1 for Smaart and the M1 does not play nice with soundgrid. And I have the external sound card anyways for other stuff. But you are absolutely right, you can use the soundgrid driver if you have a computer that is friends with soundgrid.
I’m on the “damn I’ve been using it wrong” team. Just ordered the missing equipment and can’t wait to try it out the correct way. Much appreciated Joe!!!
Glad this might have cleared things up a bit. A lot of people have been struggling. But this should get you started and then I plan for a part 2 with more insights in how to get the most out of it.
This is pretty much exactly how I use Smaart and Tract too. (Nice to know I’m not on my own, and that it’s about right!) Would be nice to see if anyone else has any system techs have some tips to get even more out of it
No not really. In theory you could use 64 on one console and send stereo out to the second one for additional 62 channels. But it would be messy with auxes. But it’s 64 mono or stereo channels on each console. So if you only have stereo channels you have 128 inputs per console. Bottom line. It’s a 64 channel console.
very nice video. I would like to know. possible to connect waves superrack performer to Berhinger flow8? if so, we would also be impatiently waiting for the video 😊👌
I've built a custom Soundgrid system using custom servers and Soundgrid Studio mixer (don't have the budget for LV1 yet), and I wanted suggest 3m dual lock tape instead of the tape you used to mount your Digigrid D. It holds items even better and is 100% reusable. It's quite popular amongst pedalboard builders, but I've been using it everywhere lately. I have to use a leaver to dismount my servers, for example, this how secure it is.
I have really only used it in a live situation, not studio. My initial thoughts are that it’s fine. Nothing more, nothing less. A step up from something like a Scarlet, but not at the level of something like an Apollo. So for many this would be a great device, both in studio and live.
SOOOOO....I know Digigrid as an outboard EFX processor for DANTE or other various ethernet solutions. I have ZERO idea of what this box is, as you prefaced it with absolutely nothing. I can see that it is an audio interface, but is that all? What protocol? If it's just an interface, WHY? What makes this better than most? Nice to know that it gets warm...not a very inclusive or comprehensive review.
Yeah now that you point it out I can see that I should've give it a bit more context to what the box actually is. It's not Dante but Soundgrid. Basically just a audio interface for the Soundgrid network. Thanks for your feedback, I will take this into account in future videos.
This is a fantastic video!!! It seems that the I/O, stageboxes, and server need to all run on stage. What also seems to need to happen is having a backup cat5 or 6 run and also a backup computer at FOH for redundancy.
Basically you are spot on. It's not possible to have a connected computer on stage for redundancy sadly. But if everything but the host is on stage you are probably at the most secure state with the Soundgrid network. There are a bit of redundancy issues to sort out for Waves in order to make this 100% secure.
Can preamp gain be controled on software control pannel or LV1? I'm surprised to learn those knobs are not stepped encoders calibrated to db, no way to know the current gain, and headphone share the mix with out 1&2. Consider its price and how good other Waves IOs are, this is kind of a let down.
The pre amp can not be controlled on the LV1. Only on the unstepped and unmarked gain knob. For my use it’s not a big deal. But I can see where this is not ideal, so I thought it was important to point out. For many all of these things might, put together, be a dealbreaker.
Great units and been solid for us. POE works fine. You have definately flagged alot of the issues with this unit which is annoying but definately not a show stopper. Hopefully if they ever release a v2 of it, they get it better especially with the metering and also all the other things you mentioned :) fingers crossed.
Oh yeah. The ones in the video are actually S3 from like 3 years ago with the new ear muffs. I'm waiting for them to break and go for S4. But they are so well built so even with 3 years on the road they feel like new. I have the S4X in the studio. Absolute incredible value.
It’s a good interface but what I hate about the Digigrid D is that outputs 1&2 are linked to the headphones output instead of having them as separate outputs like the digigrid iox
I’m planning also to get one, so my question is how you’re using the D? I’ll have that in a second setup with no FIT. Just a small 17ch license and a server one (Digigrid IOS). Is it possible to route two matrixes to the outputs, because you said the headphones are linked to the monitor outputs. Cheers
In practice you have headphones + 1 stereo line out. So the monitor output is more for studio use or if you have a shout box at FOH. You can off course use it as a second stereo line out, but then you lose the practical use of the headphone out. So I would look at it as headphones + main out.
@@joevegna ok thanks… but for a small setup it’s totally fine, as I’m not using tons of matrixes anyways. So you have to make some compromises there, but I’m fine with that. Thanks ✌🏼
Great video, although I would make the callers part a bit more difficult for You, because it is actually sometimes necessary for the callers to hear each other.
The starting point for me is to run everything post fader if I'm the dedicated monitor engineer. If I run monitors (and side fills) from FOH the starting point is pre fader. But then there are exceptions that really comes down to personal preference or special needs.
EV2 on every FOH input channel works nicely in a live situation as well. Compressor into EQ is magical and isolating eq selections is quick and useful. At 96k it is a processor hog but that's what the Titan is for.
