Recollection Road is about taking a look at American life during various decades. This is best done by seeing how these moments looked. We all remember flipping through old photo albums and this channel is meant to feel that same way.
Recollection Road is a place where we can look back at the nostalgic eras of the past.
In my 20's back then and think that a lot more things were going on than we realize. Music was eclectic and moved fast. Laid the groundwork for subsequent decades we do not fully comprehend yet.
I was a charter member of Generation X(born in 1965) and as rough as my childhood was(my parents divorced and it wasn't pretty) I wouldn't trade it for anything.
After Nam ended in 75 we learned what real inflation was . 14% plus before the end of the decade...but America toughed it out. No numbers like that since.
The 70s were us surviving the worst presidential disaster before biden - Jimmy Carter. The difference was I think Jimmy Carter meant well. It was a time that helped many hippy idiots realize all their protesting against the "system" was a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing.
My boyfriend broke up with me when I was in 9th grade and asked for his mood ring back. I threw it across the gym. I feel like he should have looked at the ring and seen that coming.
We're the ones who had glass click clacks. Two glass balls on a string. They banned them after an unfortunate accident . Back then, we used to have a saying, "sticks and stones may break our bones, but names can't hurt me. Great time to be a kid!
Auto seatbelts didn’t just happen and then were abandoned - they were a stopgap measure for carmakers to provide federally-mandated passive restraints before airbags were required.
My mom had wallpaper all over the house red and black plaid flat carpet in our kitchen. Mid century modern furniture throughout the house (I still have some of it after she passed). We had a MCM White Round pedestal dining room table with swivel matching white bucket chairs. My room had powder blue shag carpet, powder blue floral wallpaper, a hanging bamboo cage swing chair, and I had my own powder blue Bell Telephone “Princess” style phone! I used to listen to vinyl in my room and talk on my phone…what memories!,
In the 60s I slept outside in our backyard all summer in my makeshift tent. When the school year resumed, my mom made me move back into my bedroom. All I can say is that it was weird to have a roof over my head and be in a confined space. I too saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. My sister and girl cousins always watched American Bandstand. I never missed the Twilight Zone. I still watch it during the New Year's marathon.
I grew up in Venice, CA back in the 70's. I can remember two guys with vans, one with the word "Vangina" painted on the side panels, and another van with "Cherry Picker" painted on its side panels.
We always had the operator to lookup a number. Sewing is still a skill. You forgot car light dimmer switch on floor. Balancing account has not changed. Card catalogs were clearly a failure given the uneducated republicans who believe lies vs truth. Dating is still about a real connection vs sex which is a profile.
One of the greatest innovations in the 20C was the point of sale machines where you can use a debit card, or credit card for your purchases, especially in supermarkets. No more having to pay with paper currency. The digital scanner to add up your items in supermarkets is way superior to the manual cash registers where the clerk had to hit the numbers on the machine, but look at the price tag first.
I wasn't "rich" until 1976. That's when we moved from Paramount CA. (south central) to El Toro CA. (Upper middle class white neighborhood) We were one of the last white family to move out of our block. I shocked the system bringing my "Hood Upbringing" to the suburbs. Idiots actually. I was only 10 but blew their minds.
Dude... Seats are so much less comfortable now days. And leather is horrible material. The demise of velour and tuck and roll and tufted seats came from our collective next best thing is better and the rise of faux ( Corinthian ) leathers and alternative ( looking at nougahide and plether) along with the sporty ideals. Living in the desert growing up I can attest to fabric vs leather and leather- ish products on hot days with and with out a/c
I was born in 1961, so I remember the "golden days" of flying and they WERE wonderful! I remember the stewardesses would take my father's coad and hat and later would come around with magazines to choose from too. And there was the "Crown Room" at Delta--complete with white table linens, a la carte dining and cocktails, a grand piano, etc. The Crown Room was the lounge and waiting room for first class passengers to enjoy a light meal and get "lit" before boarding the plane. Ironically, the seats on planes have become smaller and closer together while Americans have gotten bigger and fatter. I actually dread flying today. It has become classless, rude and inconsiderate. I still dress for plane travel and have even gotten complimented and thanked for it--however, self-dignity and pride should never be let go for so-called "comfort". The Arab and Korea airlines have retained a high-level of hospitality and luxury--but, the American airlines have fallen into ruin and shame. People have become SO cheap and relaxed--while there are still many of us who would pay more to return to the "golden days" (or to at least bring some of it back). Good video and well-done!
