That is a great and very easy way to bind a book. I do the stitching though the other way round, which means that I insert the needle to the middle hole from the outside in order to have the final knot on the outside of the sketchbook and I also leave a quite large tail that I "braid" into something like a kord to use it to keep the sketchbook closed.

Will the Golden gesso stick to aluminum well?? I find it hard to believe that it will have a long life.
@SpinesAndSplines
@SpinesAndSplines 3 месяца назад
These aluminium painting panels are treated in a way that helps adhesion. It’s not just a regular piece of aluminium, but something produced by an art supply company specifically for painting on. If you’re wanting to paint on a regular piece of metal, you’re best off using a metal specific primer. That said, I have used regular gesso on regular metal, but I would only do that if I was making something for myself.

This is a wonderful video with clear explanations. Thank you for sharing the different size and orientation versions. Please consider, if possible, removing the very irritating music. It’s a huge distraction. To anyone with hearing difficulties it’s also too loud. Makes it hard to hear past it. To some of those with mental health issues or other non-standard brains it might well be more than annoying. Fortunately I was able to turn off the sound and go with subtitles before I started screaming. 😁.

How ingenious. Something I’ll be trying. Do you have any sense of how long the ink lasts before it dries out? At that point, would you just recharge the tape or wipe the old ink off?

The question that still remains for me is if the charcoal particle size is actually small enough to separate out the acrylic polymer from the water. I'm not sure it actually does as the particle size is actually larger. Purified activated charcoal is 10,000 - 100,000nm and acrylic polymer when wet seems to be 50nm (hard to find the size for when it's wet versus when it is dry). So what is the charcoal doing? Is it binding to with the acrylic polyer and pigment particles? Thanks! I appreciate the video!

Hi,i won't tell anyone what they should or not do,but metal primers that give the best results are either etch type or 2k(2 pack),i've restored my triumph spitfire twice,once wrong(paint rust issues) and the second time with 2k primer and zinc primers,no rust issues. Aluminium is a tricky metal to paint and i think etch primer will give the best results. I'm looking for the best paint for stomp boxes other than automotive 2k types,out of the automotive paint i would lean towards the commercial paints they seem to be very hard wearing. Powder coat ,i am not a fan,alloy motorbike wheels end up flaking due to the powdery oxides produced when scratched,so powder coat is out as repairs are non existent as a full strip and recoat is needed. Again 2k paint is best for batch painting which suits me,but prototyping is always a one off affair and getting it right first time is either luck or due diligence expediting the info. I have pedals that have been painted and it never bothered me if they chip on corners but now i want to produce high end tube pedals....urgh. Another off shoot from classic cars is a paint used on old matel dash boards and scution plates and that is crinkle paint,it's black and with a tight small crinkle finish ,i've seen pedals done with this and it's a reasonably hard wearing finish,where the switch gear lights etc are finger constantly scratch and rub,just remembered it,not cheap,but a spray can would give tens of enclosures,a spray can of etch primer too. Small sample 1/4ltr of 2k paint can be bought cheap enough with the hardener too a need,a small air brush is also cheap,a compressor can be made from an old refridgeration compressor from a dump or ebay,no need for a tank with an air brush. There is always salt electrolysis,be aware to not use sodium chloride/table salt use potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte as table salt/sea salt/road salt/sodium chloride when used as an electrolyte will produce CHLORINE GAS, as used in the trenches of ww1. You could nickel plate unpainted areas,just as in etching a pcb either positive or negative image and keep or strip the paint,again something from the classic car thing . Just spitballing ideas ,i still have to sus out the cheapest most hard wearing paint,acid etch paint i think is the best way to go as a base layer.

@mjpete27

I was so surprised to see that you started out at the most basic level! I have used several of the commercial brands of watercolor ground, it is quite expensive! I found Liz Chaderton and her recipe for watercolor ground is gesso and modeling paste. If you want the wood grain to show through for a unique look, use transparent gesso and modeling pastes it works so well I have stopped buying any commercial brands and I have saved loads of money making my own! Thank you for sharing your from scratch recipes.

Thanks for your comment! Having lived in a number of places internationally, I’ve found that not all art supplies are easily available in a lot of places, and I get frustrated with recipes that insist on using a certain product of brand that’s not always accessible, so I wanted to try and figure out how to make something like this from scratch. Glad you found it useful. :)

Fabulous video! Lovely project. It's great you used what you had and that would work best for you. There's always so many rules (particularly in this instance with guitar painting) and I love you went absolutely your own way. You clearly spent a lot of time on the video itself too and it is mega chilled. Awesome. Keep rockin! 🎸🤘

@SpinesAndSplines
@SpinesAndSplines 8 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks for your comment. Calcium Carbonate (sometimes called "whiting") is a mildly abrasive compound used in a lot of cleaning supplies. When you mix it with a small amount of liquid it makes a good paste for cleaning the surface of copper and other metals. You can try baking soda if you want, but calcium carbonate is what has been used in every print studio I've worked in.

I tried this, but while it dried my materials became wrinkly. I tried to iron it, but then some small paper lines were visible through the fabric, because the fabric was dark. Any idea why that happened?

Hi, there. Would you be able to use a thin piece of cardboard like a cereal box?
@SpinesAndSplines
@SpinesAndSplines 9 месяцев назад
Hi Gaby, you can try whatever you like! The handy thing about juice/milk containers is that they already have a coating on them, which makes them easier to wipe and helps protect them from ink and liquid. If you wanted to use an uncoated piece of cardboard (like a cereal box), you’d likely need to coat it with a glue or varnish first so that it lasts longer before falling apart.
@GabyGibson

Thank you for this video! I made my first batch of mushroom ink last year just for fun and saw that you can achieve wonderful textures and richness of colour. However, my ink quickly went bad, even though I boiled my mushrooms and used cloves oil as a preservative. Do you have any tips on how to prolong its life? Maybe I should use alcohol?
